It may also be on private property as well. Drat again. Getting to the cemetery one must cross private land. If the waters are up (they aren't at present), then this also poses a problem. Otherwise, it's advisable to traverse the area in a four-wheel drive vehicle. Also, once you arrive at the site then you must climb a small hill to get to the cemetery. The cemetery isn't in good condition due to neglect and cattle being able to graze on and near the cemetery. The best time to visit is in the winter when foliage is gone and the snakes aren't as plentiful. Glenn Jones

Carol, what's the ancestry name? I'm five hours away in Oklahoma, but could be persuaded....I've hiked into rural cemeteries before! LOL Actually, not to lead you on, but we'd need more information about ownership of said cemetery property. Backbone Cemetery is located on the hill between the Osage River and Brush Creek in Washington County. It is also called Stansfield Cemetery and/or Graveyard Point. I'm told it takes a 4-wheel drive to get to this cemetery now. Drat. It may also be on private property as well. Drat again. Is anyone going there any time soon? <LOL> I know, I know, I'm crazy, OK?! There are probably 15-20 of my relatives buried there, including my gr-grandmother, and I would pay a darn good price for pictures of what I'm sure are their broken stones. I live in the San Francisco area, am handicapped, and unable to get there. As soon as I sprout wings, though, I'm on my way! If anyone knows of someone who would be willing to get up there for me, please let me know. Thanks very much, Carol Littrell Brown (who's keeping her fingers crossed and can hardly type this way)
Nancy, Thank you, and it is wonderful that you are helping others in your area. That is all I asked of you and others who wanted to re-pay me somehow. It has been a wonderful year, to be able to help others. I had so many people all over the country that helped me when I first started my journey into the Genealogy & history of my family. Had several experiences through this hunt" that connected me or my husband to some of you on the 3 county lists, that turned out to be family, as well! Who knew? Question, what Crawford families are you looking for in the area? I have several Crawfords that married into some of my husbands' Fields cousins families in the Benton Co. area. Thank you, Gerry! I'm afraid these aren't my Andersons, though. It appears that John and Mary were living in Denton Co., Texas in 1880 (with Nancy Frances and her brother, Mark, both in the household along with a couple of the younger siblings, including Samuel who appears with John and Mary in the 1900 Washington Co. Ark census.) My grandmother (Nancy's daughter) used to speak of Aunt Pollie who lived near them in Cincinnati, Ark. Does anyone have any information on Pollie or any of the other siblings from this family? It looks like they may have lived in the Weddington area for a period of time. I know that my great-grandfather, Albert Ashley Waits, taught school there for awhile before moving to Cincinnati. Any help would be appreciated!
