P.S. I was hoping that their would be proof of who his parents were. That information should be on the death certificate (if there was one). The names of his parents probably wouldn't be on the probate record, but maybe his brothers and sisters might be named, and that would give me a clue. bj bj berrykeeper <bjberrykeeper@yahoo.com> wrote: Hi Lynn, I have a picture of his gravemarker. My grandpa and uncle made the marker for him. That's how I know he died in 1903. The court record about the will or probate record is the most interesting (and likely) at this point. He owned a farm in Van Buren County. Where would I look for this record? bj Van Buren Co Genweb wrote: Death Certificates 1903 - Arkansas did not require Death Certificates until 1914 and then many did not report them for several years since it was a "new" thing. There are NO death certificates before 1914...the best you can hope for is an obit or a tombstone...or a court record with a will or just a probate record. If a deceased person had over a certain amount of property....I think it was $300 or mayb $500 they still had to do a court record even if there was no will and many times the death date will be there. I have many of those on the site but not after 1900 - yet. Lynn - Van Buren Co., GenWeb site. arvanbur-request@rootsweb.com wrote: Today's Topics: 1. I don't remember the details (it's been MANY years ago) but I do remember that the State of Arkansas couldn't find a death certificate for him. I still want to find one, and I'm wondering if there would be anywhere else that I could look? Or, would it do any good to send the State of Arkansas Vital Records more money (they keep the money regardless of whether they find any information or not) just in case they missed it the first time around? I know my Aunt's birth certificate can't be found (possibly because the handwritting was bad and filed under some other name) and I know she had a birth certifcate because her mom said she did and all of her brother's and sisters had one. I will apparently have to go to Arkansas and look myself when I can afford to go back there (I live in Oregon). Meantime, is there maybe a local place that might have a death certificate for him? Would death certificates from 1903 be filed in more than one place (like maybe the county)? Thank you in advance, bj berry "A person should think with his heart". Perhaps they could help you search long distance. I've been in touch with them. I don't think I've asked them about alternative places to look for the death certificate though. I'll contact them again. Thank you. bj Andy Copping wrote: Hi there, My ancestors are from Van Buren County as well, and we made a trip there three years ago and found the Van Buren County Historical Society in Clinton very helpful and volunteers very knowledgeable.
