    3. Hi Lynn, I have a picture of his gravemarker. My grandpa and uncle made the marker for him. That's how I know he died in 1903. The court record about the will or probate record is the most interesting (and likely) at this point. He owned a farm in Van Buren County. Where would I look for this record? bj Van Buren Co Genweb <lynn_risener@yahoo.com> wrote: Death Certificates 1903 - Arkansas did not require Death Certificates until 1914 and then many did not report them for several years since it was a "new" thing. There are NO death certificates before 1914...the best you can hope for is an obit or a tombstone...or a court record with a will or just a probate record. If a deceased person had over a certain amount of property....I think it was $300 or mayb $500 they still had to do a court record even if there was no will and many times the death date will be there. I have many of those on the site but not after 1900 - yet. Lynn - Van Buren Co., GenWeb site. arvanbur-request@rootsweb.com wrote: Today's Topics: 1. I don't remember the details (it's been MANY years ago) but I do remember that the State of Arkansas couldn't find a death certificate for him. I still want to find one, and I'm wondering if there would be anywhere else that I could look? Or, would it do any good to send the State of Arkansas Vital Records more money (they keep the money regardless of whether they find any information or not) just in case they missed it the first time around? I know my Aunt's birth certificate can't be found (possibly because the handwritting was bad and filed under some other name) and I know she had a birth certifcate because her mom said she did and all of her brother's and sisters had one. I will apparently have to go to Arkansas and look myself when I can afford to go back there (I live in Oregon). Meantime, is there maybe a local place that might have a death certificate for him? Would death certificates from 1903 be filed in more than one place (like maybe the county)? Thank you in advance, bj berry "A person should think with his heart". 3. Per Death & Birth Records in Arkansas: According to "The Handy Book for Genealogists," by Everton Publishing, Arkansas Bureau of Vital Statistics had Death records from 1914 and Birth Records from 1917. Needless to say, that is not necessarily true. My husband's grandfather died in 1920 in a small community in Conway Co, AR - his death was not recorded. My husband was born 1922 in Cleburne Co, AR at his parents home. His younger brothers were also born at home, in Conway County, as late as 1930. None of their births were recorded. They all had to get Delayed Birth Certificates when they had to enter the Service in WW II. Also, for giving the Vital Statistics people credit - when they could not find a Delayed Birth Certificate for my husbands mother or the Death Certificate for the above mentioned Grandfather, I received, much later, a letter from Vital Statistics stating that they had searched other Counties and could not find any record for these two. For these early births and deaths your best chance for a record is an obituary or birth announcement in a newspaper. The abstracts of the Morrilton Newspapers in Conway Co, AR is a treasure trove of information. Those small town weekly newspapers had "reporters" in all of the small communities around. . Good luck in your research. 1. Information Needed
    2. JoRetta Lewis
    3. I will appreciate any information you might share with me.... My ancestor, John Ratliff b. about 1750 VA. , along with his wife and four sons, migrated into Arkansas in the early 1820's. They were in Washington County and Crawford County. Possibly some of the others due to counties expanding from one into another. On one Census I saw Richland Township? John was last on an 1832 Tax List. Not long after that his sons begin to move in different geographical directions. Seems a couple came into Texas while another went to Missouri. This leads me to believe that John Ratliff died in Crawford County about 1833. His wife may have died before then. They would have been between 70-80 years of age. I am searching for the burial site of this couple or either one. I know this is an impossible dream but I do so want to find their site. If you can help with ANY information on the John Ratliff family I will be every so grateful. Thank you, J. Lewis
