February 4, 2000 For Immediate Release Contact: Tracey Converse roots@myfamily.org 501-835-7502 ARKANSAS' LARGEST FAMILY HISTORY ORGANIZATION OFFERS GENEALOGY CLASSES Little Rock-The Arkansas Family History Association recently announced a lecture series featuring national and regional speakers on how to trace your family tree. According to April 1999 issue of Time Magazine, family history research is one of the leading subject on the Internet. With the advent of the Internet, AFHA founder Desmond Walls Allen says, "Reconnecting distant family relations is now easier than before. Many folks find when they get on mailing lists that they have a distant cousin also researching the family." "Our website alone had 20,000 hits last month. Our staff of nationwide volunteers have done over 200 genealogy lookups in the last month." Designed to offer free membership and online lookups to people with Internet access, AFHA has grown to the largest genealogical organization in the state with over 1000 members worldwide. During just the first three weeks of this year, the AFHA Internet Mailing list saw over 700 messages posted about Arkansas history. "The phenomenal growth shows an incredible interest of the people of Arkansas to learn about their families past," said Allen. Education is a major goal of this organization. With monthly meetings held at the Central Arkansas Library's Main Branch, AFHA hopes to educate more people in the fine art of research. Tickets to the classes are $12 in advance and $10 for members. The class runs from 2-5 pm at the Main Library in Little Rock at 100 Rock Street. Monies raised will be used to support the Richard C. Butler Center for Arkansas Studies at the Central Arkansas Library. The February 20 meeting will feature regional lecturer Tracey Converse. Her topic will be "Surfing the Web for Cousins." She will provide insight into how to find your family information on the web. What search engines to use and how to share your information with others. Converse is also the web master for the Central Arkansas Library System and has been on the web for 5 years and researching her family history since 1983. Additional classes are slated for March 17, April 15, May 14, June 11 and July 30. Topics will include Newspaper Research, Beginning Genealogy, Civil War Records, and Native American Research. Dear ladies and gentlemen, More than a year ago, one of my brothers finished to compile all our Salvaille family tree. As everybody knows, it took him quite some time to gather all the information back to 1673 when Pierre Salvaye married Catherine Leroy. He entered all his data in a computer database and he felt that all his hard work was dead, not alive, and not accessible to our family. His hard work was not finished yet.... He discussed about his problem to a friend that became is associate for that special task: Make something that can be show to the rest of family, over which we can discuss, tell stories, remember events and tell our children where we come from; to make it plain in simple "Make the tree a living fragments of our past". It took them more about a year to develop that "living tree" and meanwhile they given me the opportunity to help them in their project. Week per week we develop that tree: finding the backgrounds, designing a well structured tree with 3D boxes and with all the name in it, the right printer, the right paper, the right ink so that the colours and writings would not fade away with time... We were proud of our accomplishment and it was time to share this hard work with the amateur or professional genealogists there are in the world. This is not an easy process for us but we know that the genealogists have they same emptiness then us at the beginning. We know that them too would like sharing with their family all the hard work they putted into their project. So we created a site called www.genographica.com and each week we meet to improve the site, offer new type of trees. We are working are to help genealogists in their work. Our home page in called http://www.genographica.com/index.html and we are also very proud of our site. We are trying to be as helpful then Cyndi Howells or Rhonda R. McClure to name a few but it will take aus quite some time and some hard work to be as helpful and as good as them. I want to thank particularly Mrs Rhonda R. McClure for her letter http://207.153.204.247/cgi-bin/gt/archives_issue.html?user=ffffffffffff&news letter=1604&nl_master=1 ) . She wrote such beautiful comments on our site and we felt even prouder of it. We felt that she understood us so well what we are trying to do. We are planning to write every month, if necessary, on new things we are developing. We are, by the way, designing a blank form tree of help the genealogists gather all their data on paper (in a genographic tree form naturally) and a black and white genographic tree without a background. Thank you for your time and being part of the action. Carol Salvaille
Thanks to all who have written with information on the Society. It is what I needed to continue with my research Cyndi
Does anyone know if there is a Van Buren Co. AR Genealogical Society. I keep sending in for information and months later I receive my letters back with request for more information. The first time I requested information I wrote to the Van Buren Co Genealogical Assc RT 6 Box 254-9 Clinton, AR and I received my letter back from Maurice Rickey Bonds Whillock Circuit Clerk. I was requesting to join the Genealogical Society and asked about the purchase of any cemetery books. My returned letter had a little notation requesting the first names of the familles I was researching. So I sent that in. I also requested a record from record book C. I received my letter back with one note. Record book C does not go to page 174. Have I slipped into the genealogical Twilight Zone? Is there a Van Buren, CO Genealogical Society? Any insight would be appreciated. Cyndi

My grandmother, LaVada Eveline Gross HENLEY, was a child of Ealon Wesley Gross and Susannah Lincoln Brown. I know that Susannah Brown Gross is buried in Pleasant Grove Alread in Van Buren County, and that there is a Parrizeda Brown that is also buried in same cemetery, I am trying to prove that this Parrizeda Brown is the mother of Susannah. Also know that Joseph Brown, Susannah's father, is buried on Jones Farm at Alread, and that he has a civil war headstone, but before this stone was placed, there was a homemade marker, and I would like to know if anyone can tell me what the wording was on the old marker. Hello list, I am researching the Samuel Henleyborn 12-14-1848, twin brother to David Henley) family that lived in Van Buren County during the later part of the 1800's. Samuel Henley married Virginia (Ginny) Bailey in October 1874, but I have been unable to locate the county of their marriage, nor have I been able to locate the parents of Virginia. It is thought that her mother may have been named Hannah, but have found no real proof of this. Virginia died in 1916 and is buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Alread, Samuel died in 1926 and is buried in Chastian Cemetery, also known as Dogwalk. Can anyone help me with any information on Virginia's parents or siblings??? Also looking for burial place of Samuel's father, Jackson Henley, who was supposedly hanged in 1864, for supplying horses to Union troops, and of Samuel's mother, Matilda R Autrey Henley, who died in December 1896. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Jettie Henley Parrish

I need the date of death and burial place for James BOONE. His wife, Susan (BRADLEY) BOONE, and son, William Miles Boone, are buried in Hardin Cemetery close to Morganton, AR. There is no grave marker there for James BOONE.
I am the list admin. for the ARVANBUREN list. I do not live in Arkansas. My grandfather John Davis ROW was born in Van Buren Co. This has been a very difficult line for me & over the years I have gathered a considerable amount of information on other Van Buren Co. families who are unrelated to me. Hence, my interest in the county as a whole. Some of the surnames that are somewhat connected to my line are CULLUM, MICHAEL, STEPHENS, GRAY, COMPTON. I would like for the other members of this list to share about their Van Buren Co. connections. Joyce Baldwin Spurgin
