If I remember correctly as to what I have heard, I believe a flood destroyed all the earlier records before 1865 in the Van Buren County courthouse. That was such a loss. Wilda

If someone has access to the 1900 Van Buren County, Arkansas Federal Census, I would greatly appreciate a lookup for the family of ISAAC DOWDY. Thanks ahead of time. Betty Wells Locust Grove, Oklahoma wellsfam@sstelco.com
there is a Frances Cook listed as mother in law to Isaac Carroll & wife Martha in the 1920 census listed as being 102 years old. they were in house 169 Union Township Van Buren Co Ark census She did not have a husband then - but that would have made her born about 1818 & died after 1920. the cemetery book had her dates as 1814-1917 does anyone connect to this Frances Cook ??? Thanks love Genia kfl12oz@inter-linc.net
One of my most mysterious lines concerns the family of Wallace W. GEORGE (Wallace may have a creative spelling) b. abt. 1871 Indiana, who married Breness Deel, born Dec 1884 in Arkansas. They married abt. 1908, probably in Van Buren County. Breness was a daughter of John H. Deel III and Martha Jane FOSTER DEEL BOLTON. They had at least four children: Abbie b. July 1908 Isadora b. abt. 1911 Elzy or Elzie b. abt. 1913 Frank b. abt. 1916 The family history is that after Wallace's death (which would have occurred at some point after 1920) Breness moved the family to Mississippi County, Arkansas (though the reason is not given). The family started in White Oak Township, Van Buren County. Thank you for any help! --Amy
Thanks to the great generosity of a fellow list member I was able to "resurrect" two cousins I thought might have died. Lucretia DEEL was the daughter of John H. Deel III and Martha Jane FOSTER. She was raised by her step-father, Rinard Owen BOLTON. Lucretia was born 8 Mar 1877 in southern Indiana and died 25 Feb 1949, probably in Conway County. She and her husband are buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery. She married William M. HENDERSON, born 25 Sept 1858 in Arkansas; father born Alabama. He died 12 Dec 1934 and is also buried in Mt. Zion. They had at least the following children: John H. William R. (may have had the nickname Arkie; of Hattieville; b. 22 Sept 1902 and d. 25 Nov 1988) Rinard E. (may have gone by R. Henderson; b. 20 Sep 1904, d. Jan 1980 in Morrilton) Lonzo (b. 14 Sept 1909 d. 27 Dec 1993 in Morrilton) Minnie Mae m. BRENTS (b. 15 Apr 1912, d. 22 Apr 1999 in Morrilton) This last is so recent I was hoping someone might be able to do an obit lookup -- the obit ran in the Democrat-Gazette, for certain, on 23 April 1999; but may have run in one of the other more local papers. The family lived in White Oak Township in Van Buren County for a considerable amount of time, as did the rest of Lucretia's family. Any information greatly appreciated! I have Lucretia's ancestry back a considerable way ... in the tradition of the South she was called Creasy or Lucreasy, but was named after her Indiana paternal grandmother Lucretia Grass. Thanks, Amy
I am requesting an obituary lookup for Esker T. SIMPSON d. 11 July 2001, last known residence was Scotland. Thank you! --Amy

I am trying to decipher a name on the census in 1920 White Oak Township, Van Buren County. One of my cousins is married to a William (Bill) Porter which got indexed as Bill Parter. Her sister, Abigail (Abbie) Bolton, is living next door, married to an Otto ? (transcribed as Pantera, which I doubt is accurate). They have two daughters, Viola and Violet, born abt. 1914 and 1916, respectively. Otto was a predominantly German name in those years, but I can't seem to find a match in surrounding areas to other possible family. Also, are Van Buren County marriages available past 1900? This might help me figure out the surname. I am looking for BOLTON marriages. Thank you! --Amy

In a message dated 4/25/02 9:02:09 AM Central Daylight Time, belann@ezla.net writes: > www.rootsweb.com/~armarion/mtecho.html I have absolutely no kin that I know of in Yell Co., but I have thoroughly enjoyed reading the very earliest transcriptions of this newspaper (1886). Thanks for posting about this site. In it, I have learned of a FL senator (Jones) who was smitten with a Detroit heiress. He refused to go back to Washington for legislature, instead was trying to win the affections of the 30-yr-old woman who wanted absolutely nothing to do with him. He proposed after only meeting her twice (and not even "dates" at that!). At the time of the article he'd been pursuing her for about 2-3 months. I haven't yet learned whether or not (or, I should say, when) he gave up and headed back to work. Sensational journalism existed ago :-) Also, there is the story of a married man "eloping" with his brother's wife, each leaving behind 5 children apiece. The left-behind brother files for divorce (learned in a later article), and finally, the two elopees return home to their respective families. It leaves you to wonder what became of these lives......... Then there are the anecdotes of rabies being cured, or warded off, by the "mad-stone". If you love history, you'll love these newspaper articles, even if you don't have family in the immediate county. Tracey
