Jettie, I haven't heard from you in quite a long while. Just wanted you to know that I am still here. I have known or heard of many of your relatives. Bill and Vada, Net, Oss, Leah, and David were the older ones. There are several in my age bracket. In fact I have picture of some of them. I am not for sure where you fit in the group. I Know that my sister Eva, who married Deck Burk, visited with, I think it was your Dad, who lived near Cleveland, AR. Glad to see you on the Van Buren County group list. John B. I hope this post doesn't violate any of this lists rules. If so, I apologize in advance. This morning, in my email, is a fraud attempt, using the scam that someone in a foreign country has died, they are attempting to locate relatives, and my surname came up on an internet genealogy search. Of course, I realize that most of us have received a version of this attempt at fraud before, but this is my first, where they are using our genealogy posts to attempt this scam. NARA has put records on the web 50 Million Historical Documents Hit Web By EUN-KYUNG KIM The Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) - Researchers, genealogists and the plain curious can now use the Internet to check more than 50 million historical records at the National Archives, from Civil War battles to family immigration files. Before the system became available, people had to either visit the Archives and spend hours combing through documents or request the files by phone and pay to have them mailed. ``Now, people can pull these electronic records at their own convenience,´´ said Michael Carlson, electronic and special media records director for the archives. ``It´s totally self-service from your desktop.´´ The records available on the database system represent a small fraction of the archive's electronic holdings. They were selected because of their analytical and statistical nature - most deal with information that easily can be looked up based on specific names, dates, organizations, cities or states. For instance, someone wanting to research a great-grandfather who immigrated to the United States in the 19th century can choose the series of records listed under ``immigrants,´´ enter the relative´s name and learn on what ship he traveled, the occupation he claimed prior to leaving, the date he arrived in New York, and the country from which he left, among other details. ``It can be another stop in creating your family tree and understanding what happened and when,´´ said Michael Kurtz, assistant archivist for records services. Carlson said he expects the service will be popular with veterans in particular because of all the information related to military action, casualties and POWs. The records in the new system ``aren´t a revelation in information, but is it helpful? Absolutely,´´ said American Legion spokesman John Peterson after checking out the Web site. ``A lot of people active with the POW/MIA issue complain the government doesn´t release enough documents about people who are still missing, so almost anything they give out is good in our eyes,´´ he said. Kristine Minami, a spokeswoman for the Japanese American Citizens League, said getting easy access to government records will provide ``a lot of validation´´ to Japanese Americans who were sent to internment camps during World War II. The database draws from the records of 20 federal agencies. Most of the information was created by the agencies to suit their own program needs, without any thought to its historical significance. Because of that, some records have typographical errors like misspelled names or an inaccurate dates. National Archives officials did not correct any of the information to preserve the records' integrity. Shirley Langdon Wilcox, former president of the National Genealogical Society, called the new system an ``extremely useful and exciting´´ tool. ``This certainly gives you enough of an idea of what might be available to you so you know what to weed out before taking a trip somewhere,´´ she said. ``Anytime you have a tool that can make yourself better prepared before you go to the Archives or library, it´s worthwhile. You don´t end up wasting an hour or two looking at whether they have something, because you´ve done your homework. Looking for BIRDSONG'S.. My grandfather was Murphy Birdsong. His brothers and a sister were, Thomas-17, John-15, Sarah-19 and Mattie Birdsong-12 in the 1910 Census in Jackson County, AR. They lived with Murphy (35)and his wife( Martha- 23) at that time.. Any information would be appreciated.. Lil Smith
So thrilled to hear from someone researching Birdsongs!!! My ancestor is actually not a Birdsong but I have a Birdsong Connection. Dee Wood was one of five children of LeRoy Harrison Wood and Ellen DeForrest Wood. LeRoy and Ellen were apprarently traveling through Van Buren County, AR in 1882 working with, or perhaps the owner of a traveling saw-mill company. Ellen gave birth to a set of twins; DeForrest and DeEtta (a boy and girl) in Sept. 1882. She died shortly thereafter either from the flu or else from childbirth. At about the same time as Ellen died; LeRoy also died of the flu leaving five young children including the newborn twins homeless and orphaned. Herbert was the eldest of the children and he was taken in by someone who owned a dairy where he worked for his room and board. The older girls, Ila and Edna May were raised by unknown families in or near Shiloh Arkansas. The twins were taken in by unknown families. DeEtta was raised by a Cothren family who owned some sort of horse ranch or farm where she was raised probably as an only child and was quite spoiled. DeForrest or "Dee" Wood was living with a Birdsong family in the 1900 Census of Shiloh, Cleburne Co. Arkansas. He was listed as an 18 yr old Orphan. I suspect they raised him from birth, but apparently though the children were taken in by various families, they were never adopted. I am interested in anyone researching Birdsongs- and hope to find a family story mentioning the fact that a Birdsong family took in your Dee as a baby. Have you ever heard of an orphan being raised among your Birdsongs? Thanks if you can help! Hi List, Thanks to all of you that let me know I was on the list. You all seem so kind and ready to help others. Here is who I am looking for in VanBuren,Ark. Sarah Jane Ross marr. ??? Willoughby.....when and where I have no idea. She was my Gr.Gr.Grandfathers sister. I have no info. about her other than she was born in 1847/48 at Barry Co. Flatcreek Twp. which is Cassville, MO. today. She was born to James Ross & Charity Jane Baze(aka Charlotte or Lottie). Her mother Charity or Charlotte married James Ross in 1841 at McNairy Co.TN. before moving to Barry Co. Mo. in 1842 or 1843. When is supposedly died.....she married Abel Black in May 1852 at Cassville,Mo. Sarah may have met this Willoughby in Mo. or Ark. as I cannot make any connections to any Willoughbys in Mo. But of course if I had his first name it would be easier. I found her as Sarah Jane Willougby as she signed an affidavit along with a Madison Walker in 1868 living in Greene Co.Mo and then again she signed an affidavit with her brother John Alexander Ross, that lived in Mountainburg,Crawford Co. ARk. by 1865. This affidavit she signed for her mother the second time stated that she was the daughter of James and Charlotte Ross, Black. and her address was Van Buren,Ark. in 1883. I have not been able to find her anywhere. I dont know if maybe she ever remarried again if ??? Willoughby died.....or if they had any children or what happened to her. She has been a mystery. Is there any cemetery listings I can find for Van Buren?? I would appreciate anything about her or him. I will share my info. with others also on the list. Thanks Again for all the responses I got back. Great List of people here. Debbie __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! I am searching for William RHODES and Rebecca B. BRADFORD family. A son Samuel Mason was born on 25 of December 1850 in Clinton Van Buren Co. AR. according to information I have. In the 1860 census for Griggs Twp. I find William with a wife Nancy. Also several children. I am told by family that Samuel Mason had a sister Catherine. No other children mentioned. I can't find a death of Rebecca or a new marriage. Is anyone searching this family? Can you suggest any other research help. By 1870 the son was in Moultrie Co. Illinois and the History of Moultrie and Shelby Co. IL. article says William returned to his home in AR. All Help appreciated! Shirley H. grigg
Yes, you are on the list. It is just a very quiet list. Who are your Van Buren lines? My grandfather was John Davis ROW, born in Van Buren Co., AR in 1864 or 1865. His parents were Andrew Jackson ROW and Harriett Jane (maiden name unknown, possibly MICHAEL). Harriett was also married to Francis (or Franklin) Cullum and John W. Gray. Her only other surviving to adulthood child was George W. Cullum.
