Catherine: I am not familiar with any of your family names - And I thought I remembered most of the families around Strong! Debra, you are more than welcome. Debra and Louis you both mention El Dorado and one of you Strong, Arkansas. I am African-American and my Houston, Bullard, and Dikes relatives lived in both of these places. Are either of you familiar with local African-American funeral homes that have been in business for a while or any cemeteries traditionally A-A in the area. I live in Illinois and can't come searching the area yet. Thanks in advance for any light you might be able to shed for me. Catherine
Catherine, The listing online of cemetery's for either A-A or any are very skimpy. I don't have any records at home personally of any thing relating to Union County but our local geni library has a ton of stuff. If you get me up a list with your names I will be glad to look them up. I go at least once a month but sometimes more if something urgent comes up where I need an answer quickly. There is a large collection of Union County, Ark cemetery's but I don't seem to remember them being labeled what race the people were. They were from the Arkansas Genealogical Society so I'm sure they were probably not labeled. This was nearly twenty years ago and I will pull out the copies of the pages I photocopied for my records and see if any of your surnames you have listed are there. I found out recently that as late as the 1920's burials were not being recorded or mentioned or done by funeral homes but by the family itself. They could even buy the coffins from the local store! s. Mine were among those. Debra --------------------------------- Do You Yahoo!? Sign-up for Video Highlights of 2002 FIFA World Cup

Amy I have a Henry B. Smith who's married to a Lula Cox. They had two children but their names escape me right now. I think they were Beatrice and there was a boy. Some of my Smith's were in Union Ark and Henry could have been there at one time or another but no Laymans in any of my stuff, sorry. Debra --------------------------------- Do You Yahoo!? > > Thank you Louis. He doesn't have any more from what other's in the family have told me. He is the younger brother to my ggrandfather. You and I are related through Robert Francis Farrar who's daughter Etta married my ggrandfather James Adams. I think we may have a few other surnames too. He is still in El Dorado but have been unable to get an answer from or his son Doug. I've not been able to make a crack in my El Dorado family. Albert and Sarah Margaret Cox Layman moved to El Dorado and according to one cousin, died there. One of their daughters and her husband also died there, though I am away from my genealogy computer and can't recall their names!!! Has anyone seen a LAYMAN connection in El Dorado? --Amy
It is spelled Ouachita. So many people from other places write it with a Q but that it incorrect. I am from Ouachita Parish, LA and I graduated from Ouachita Parish High School. Shirley
Mr. Robert Alex Adams wrote "My Southern Heritage - Related to the Ouachita River Basin" in 1998. The book tells of the Adams and Bolding Families. I purchased my book from him in 1998 and he lived in El Dorado (as I grew up in Strong and knew many of the descendants, but not kin). He may still live in El Dorado. Perhaps someone there can check the phone book for you. Hope this helps. I want to first say that I don't have an index so really can't do lookups unless I have the information down to the page number like Dena supplied with her request. Luckily for Debra, there were only 24 images to review in the Lapile Township Union County Arkansas database. So, Debra I found the family you asked about. 1880 AR Union County Lapile Township Enumeration Dist. 272 June 9, 1880 Page 17 Line 26 Family 15 Adams, Douglas 52 Farmer, SC Ireland Ireland Amanda 48 Keeping House TN SC SC William 18 Laborer AR SC TN Sarah F 15 attended school in previous year Minor 14 " " James 11 "" Robert 8 "" Emma 5 There is also a Bolding family for Family 15 and also several more Boldings on page 18. I'm really grateful Catherine. I'm pretty certain The Adams and Boldings owned most of Lapile Township between the two large families. I did misunderstand about the look up and thought it was a index and not an image. Next time I will ask the person. Thanks sorry for the problem. There used to be a town in Lapile called Bolding which is now defunct. Also a Church where our Boldings would hold their family reunions. One cousin said that the Boldings owned all the land to the "Wash-A-Taw" I wont even attempt to spell it but starts with an O. I do remember the indian name meaning good or big hunting. Most of the Boldings in the area arrived in the 1850's from Tenn and South Carolina. Many of the other surnames too. They'll find their ancestors came across the migratory trail from Chester County to Bradley County and crossed the river there and then came on down. For some reason there was a big movement in this time frame but this is the migratory trail most took. --------------------------------- Do You Yahoo!? Hi Dena It says he is a farmer from South Carolina and that both parents were born in Africa. It first had S. C. for both his parents and that got crossed out and Africa was written in. It looks like his wife and her parents are all from Mississippi. The two slashes indicate that he can not read or write. Let me know if you need any other information from the sheet. Glad to be able to return some of the great help I've received from others. Good Luck. Paula, yes thank you it helps in a way more than you can imagine. I read the image for the 1860 at our local library which gave me the same information you just did. But someone transcribed this census and came up with the name Harrison instead of Harrolson and I like you totally came up with Harrolson. I don't know the birthdate or age of your Robert but I have several Robert Adams in my line too. Thanks for reaffirming what I found reading the image for the 1860 census of Union County.
