Sweet, Is that your real name? My people were Smiths and have not made the connection but to say they did come from Ms and before that Alabama. One such Smith is the one that is the listed clerk of courts in Union. Now my ancestor who was the sister in law to one of the Smiths there said that the Smiths were known as Black Dutch or in whispered circles as native american or injun I guess as they called it back then. I don't see the discrimination on the records but they were dark and they were black Irish. Is this Smith person African American or Irish American. I've been trying to keep the Smiths straight since there are so many and I would really appreciate some help in this department. Thanks a lot. Good luck to you. Allene
Hello Allene, I got lots of responses but most were for making maps that would allow one city or state, etc., as well as one that even suggested FTM which I already have. The one that sounded the most promising is one called Microsoft Map Point. I don't know anything about it but the woman said, "You can detail information, put "push pins" in localities among other things. There's a lot to the program and it's not super easy to learn, however! There's even a European version!" Sounds good to me. I'm going to check to see if the university or public library has a copy on-line. If I find out anymore, I'll let you know. >From: Kerniep@aol.com >Subject: Re: Question re: map making >I don't know of one, but sure sounds like a great idea. I don't know of one, but sure sounds like a great idea. If you find out, I'd sure like to know too. Thanks. Allene/AZ.
As I get further into writing my family history, I decided that it would be great if I could make a map highlighting the various places different parts of the family have lived. The map makers I'm aware of are ones for traveling like mapblast or mapquest. Does anyone know of a site where I could just add as many or as few towns I need? FamilyTree Maker allows you to have a map that places all of your family into it but I'm not sure if I could just decide by the city/state. Thanks, Catherine

Hi Janice..... Thanks for all of your great work on the Union County cemeteries!!!! Just found your Arkansas Cemeteries site today. Have been searching for a Wesley Chapel Cemetery listing..... hope that you don't mind me sending you corrections on several of the dates for family members buried there. Janice, I am hoping that you might help me out. I am searching for the grave site for Civil War Soldier: JOHN THOMAS KING AKA: Thomas King Born: About 1843 in Conecuh County, AL Died: Nov. 11, 1881 in Union County, AR <He went by the name of Thomas> Son of William Augustus & Sarah King who migrated to the Champagnolle area of Union County before 1850. William Augustus King is buried there at Wesley Chapel Cemetery. John Thomas King's wife's name is unknown. He had children that were named in his probate dated 1881. Copied from Union County Probate Records: Administrator's Bond of $3000 was filed on 3 Dec. 1881 at New London, Union County following the death of Thomas King. Hiram King is named as administrator. Heirs named were children: Amanda King, Martha King, Bettie King & Marcus King. Thomas King died on 11 Nov. 1881. John T. King served in Confederacy with the 3rd Arkansas Regiment during the Civil War. Enrolled at Champagnolle, Union CO in 1861 at the age of 18, as a Private for the 'duration of the war'. Fought in most of the major battles of the war (including The Wilderness, Gettysburg and many others) as a member of the 3rd Arkansas Regiment assigned to the command of Colonel Hood of Texas. Was parolled at Appamatox when General Lee surrendered in 1865, holding the rank of Sergeant. His military service record indicates that he was hospitalized for wounds at least twice during the war. Bill King has his complete service record, obtained from Little Rock Civil War Archives, June 28, 1998. Thanks for any help, Janice!!!! This is a copy of some information that I located at: http://members.aol.com/hickspage/gamarriages.html and it has some very valuable information that ties in with Bradley County. For example, Martha Moss Hicks married Thomas B. St. John in Troup County and this information is listed there. Also, I know there were far more than one Hicks that came out into Bradley County and surrounding areas, so I thought I would help provide this list for those that may need it. Forwarded message, the Hills settled in the southeast portion of Arkansas: Hey, I put together a database containing over 5,000 plus names in Excel of North Carolina born persons living in Georgia. Now the information was obtained from several locations posting text files, and have been assembled to act as one database. For Instance: How I came about doing this is by way of my husband's family, who like many from Bradley County is from Troup County, Georgia. Anyway, I have followed the migratory as most all of you have down the coast of the East Coast then after the Civil War the Migration to the West Arkansas (Which is funny how it incompasses several states!!! and is used as a "Term") anyway, all of this is a preclude of just some of the information that I have found. For an example I am including a family line that I've been researching and that is the "Hills". Now I know that the "Hills" settled in the SE portion of Arkansas, including those of Bradley, Ashley and Drew Counties. Well anyway, there are alot.... And I do mean alot of Robert Hill's. Seem's like every family member that decides to have children, named one of their children Robert Hill, whether it be a boy..... or a girl (example: Robert Penolia Hill married David Samuel Stedman / Steadman and she is the daughter of Robert Hill and Nancy Carruth Hill.) Anyway, I found this while researching: NAME AGE SEX OCCUPATION HOUSEHOLD # COUNTY YEAR BORN POSSIBLE? Hill, Green 45 M Farmer 65 Troup 1805 Hill, Frances 40 F Adult 65 Troup 1810 Hill, William 20 M Adult 65 Troup 1830 Hill, Elizabeth 18 F Adult 65 Troup 1832 Hill, Julia, A. 16 F Young Adult 65 Troup 1834 There may be a connection,,,,,, but maybe not..... But I thought it was worth my consideration since Green is a also a popular first of second name term used within the Stedman / Steadman family. By the way, the database is not for publication, just personal use until I hear otherwise.

THE KING & WITHERINGTON CONNECTIONS IN SOUTH ARKANSAS They arrived in Union and Ouachita (now Calhoun) Counties about 1847, coming from Conecuh County, Alabama. <This data compiled by Bill King, 3rd Great Grandson of John Witherington & Mary Ellis> There were three WITHERINGTON brothers who were early settlers in Southern Arkansas arriving between 1845-1847 from Conecuh County, Alabama. They were JOHN, JAMES & AUGUSTUS LEVAN WITHERINGTON. 1. JOHN WITHERINGTON (born 1801 in Darlington District, SC) settled on land about half way between El Dorado & Hampton, a few miles south of the old community of Artesian (Rail Road Water Stop/had an Artesian well there) about 1846 or 1847. This area was in Ouachita County at the time; is now in Southern Calhoun County. John died in 1855 in Calhoun county. We have copy of probate filed by wife. They owned a female slave (given to his wife by her father in AL) but no record of land ownership has been found to date. His wife was Mary Ellis of SC. John Witherington was born 1801 in Darlington District, SC. Four of John's sons served for the Confederacy during the Civil War, all returned home to raise large families. [John Witherington-Mary Ellis is the family line of Bill King] 2. JAMES WITHERINGTON (b. 1805 in Darlington, SC), younger brother of John, settled around Champagnolle, a port town on the Ouachita River. He married Mary King (older sister of John Coleman King and William Augustus King who both came to Union County and are buried at Wesley Cemetery 5 miles east of El Dorado on Hwy 15, near Old Union). His wife, Mary King, was the daughter of James King and Katherine Coleman King. Mary King Witherington died in Conecuh CO, AL. James Witherington brought several minor children when he came to Arkansas. He was killed in a hunting accident in Union County in 1849 (about two years after moving to Union County), and is buried at Wesley Chapel Cemetery (located east of El Dorado on Hwy #15). Following his death, James' children were raised in the home of their uncle, John Coleman King. 3. AUGUSTUS 'Gus' LEVAN WITHERINGTON, born 1819 in Feliciana Parish, La (youngest son of William Witherington, Jr., who served as an Ensign in Mississippi Territory Militia during the War of 1812), arrived in Champagnolle, coming from Conecuh, Alabama with John Coleman King (a cousin) about 1847. "Uncle Gus" is my favorite Witherington ancestor/relative. He was a plantation owner, with slaves; operated a store and also the ferry at Pidgeon Hill (Union County) which crossed over to Moro Bay (Bradley County); was part owner in a steamboat that plyed the Ouachita and Saline Rivers and made trips to New Orleans to carry cotton down to New Orleans and bring supplies back to Champagnolle for his family and the store. During the Civil War, his steamboat, the 'Morgan Nelson', carried troops, supplies, munitions and foodstuffs as far north as Camden for the Confederacy. Of course, he carried cotton from the 'Ouachita River Bottoms' enroute south to New Orleans. According to Goodspeed's History of Union County, Gus Witherington and William Christie Langford were founders of the Champagnolle A.M. & F.M. (Masonic) Lodge in the early 1850's. William C. Langford was later to become a County Judge for Union County. Judge Langford was married to Martha Louisa Rachel Witherington, the daughter of James Witherington & Mary King. When William Augustus King of El Dorado died in 1858, his older brother and partner, John Coleman King, was named as guardian for the minor children of William Augustus King. However, Gus Witherington was named in William Augustus King's will to serve as executor of the estate and to handle all of the financial matters for the children until they reached adulthood. Since Gus was a successful businessman, I would guess that Wm Augustus trusted him to do a better job of managing his share of the family assets (600 acres, number of slaves, many horses and cattle, etc.) for the children's benefit. Gus Witherington was murdered March 26, 1869 at Moro Bay in Bradley County by James A. Davis, who shot Gus three times - from behind- following years of conflict and a terrible beating given Davis at the hands of Gus. Davis escaped into the river bottoms of Calhoun County and evaded capture until February 1872 when he surrendered to Calhoun County officials. When finally brought to trial in Bradley County, over 3 years following the murder, James A. Davis was found "not guilty". An amazing verdict, but Davis' counsel successfully painted the picture of Gus being a 'horrible villian' in his earlier beating of Davis. August Levan Witherington is buried at the pretty and very well maintained New London Cemetery in Union County, a few miles south of Pidgeon Hill. My wife and I visited Gus' grave on Sunday, June 13, following the Witherington Reunion held at Moro Bay State Park. "I had finally connected with Gus"!! It has been a most rewarding challenge getting into the depths of the King and Witherington families of Calhoun and Union Counties ......and I believe that we are about to determine that 'our' King line descends from a somewhat wealthy planter, Captain George King of Darlington District, SC and who fought with the South Carolina Militia during the Revolutionary War. Captain George King married Mary Kolb, a young lady from Society Hill on the Pee Dee River near Darlington, SC, the daughter of a prosperous and well educated German immigrant named Johannes Kolb. If we can prove that our King line does, in fact, connect with Captain George King, qualifying for SAR and DAR in both the King name and the Witherington name will be possible. So many questions, so little time! Submitted to Union County, AR Gen Society by William R. King, Jr. (UCGS Member) 14106 Carolcrest Cir. - Houston, TX 77079 LynnBillKing@pdq.net

F, 19th Arkansas Infantry; born c1837; listed in Calhoun county 1860 census with wife Martha; occupation well-digger. As far as the other two Kings in the 3rd Ark Regt Infantry, Henry F. and Berry H. King (born in GA). I have searched both the 1860 and 1870 Calhoun County Census Records with no luck in locating either. I plan to search Union County (1850-60-70). I also searched the printed 1850 "All Name" Census list (Calhoun CO), but did not discover either Henry F. or Berry H. King there either. It would seem pretty amazing for all 3 of these Kings, enrolled at Chapagnolle in 1861, to be parolled at the end of the war. With Co 'E' casualty numbers, it would be very amazing ! But possible, nevertheless. John T. King's cousin, William J. Witherington (brother of Martha Caroline), was also enrolled by Capt Nolan at Chapagnolle June, 1861. Witherington was born 1836, so he would have been about 25 at the time. Witherington lived in the same general area, but in South Calhoun County, down below the old community of Artesian, and only a few miles across the Ouachita River from the community of Chapagnolle in Union County. ___________________ From Edward G. Nolan. It traveled to Lynchburg, Virginia, where it was assigned to the Third Regiment, Arkansas Volunteers, as Company E, July 1861. On July 18, 1862, twenty-eight members of disbanded Company C, Second Arkansas Infantry Battalion, also from Union County, were assigned to this company. During its four years of service, 131 men served in Company E. Only twenty of them remained when the company was surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. Their paroles were signed on April 12, 1865, and they were released to go home. CONFEDERATE ARKANSAS TROOPS, 3rd Regiment, Arkansas Infantry 3rd Infantry Regiment, assembled at Lynchburg, Virginia, in June, 1861, contained men from Ashley, Drew, Desha, Hot Spring, Union, and Dallas counties. Assigned to H.R. Jackson's command, the unit took part in Lee's Cheat Mountain Campaign, then moved to Winchester and served under T.J. Jackson. Later it was assigned to General J. G. Walker's, J. B. Robertson's, and J. Gregg's command and became part of the Texas Brigade. After fighting in the Seven Days' Battles the 2nd Arkansas Battalion merged into the regiment. It went on to participate in many conflicts of the Army of Northern Virginia from the Maryland Campaign to Cold Harbor, except when it was with Longstreet at Suffolk, Chickamauga, and Knoxville. The 3rd was active in the long Petersburg siege north of the James River and later the Appomattox Campaign. In December, 1861, it totalled 756 men, and reported 15 casualties at the Greenbrier River and 182 during the Maryland Campaign. Of the 479 engaged at Gettysburg, thirty-five percent were disabled. The regiment surrendered with 15 officers and 130 men. The field officers were Colonels Van H. Manning, Albert Rust, and Robert S. Taylor; Lieutenant Colonels Seth M. Barton and William H.
