I found a news clipping in the family bible which I thought might be of interest. The clipping has no indication of the newspaper in which the letter was printed. "Civil War Letter Hardy -- J.W. Weaver (John Wesley WEAVER), who lives northeast of here, has a letter dated June 1, 1864, and writen (sic) to his father, Allen Weaver, by the captain of his company, who was in the Confederate military prison at Macon, Ga. The letter follows: 'Dear Friend Allen: I have written to all of the company nearly and have not received but one letter, and that was from the orderly. I am well, although I have been in prison for seven months. I have already come to the conclusion that I am forgotten by all. I have waited patiently for an exchange, but it seems that our government has forgotten the unlucky men who have been so unfortunate as to be captured. I still live in hopes, if I die in despair. You must excuse my bad writing, for I have to hold the paper in one hand, the pen in the other, and sit on the ground under the floor of a building -- a nice comfortable place. There are 1,172 officers in the lot here, including four brigadier generals. Write soon. 'I have the pleasure to be yours, etc. J.C. Martin, Capt. 1st Tennessee Artillery' " Allen WEAVER (my gggrandfather) served in the 1st Tennessee Light Artillery in the U.S. army during the Civil War. He was living in Knox Co., TN, and relocated to Sharp County after the war. ===== Fred Middleton [email protected] __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
