I did find in 1880 Scott, Sharp Co. a John A. Gardner Age 41, Born TN and his family living next door to a Robert B. Gardner Age 44, Born TN and his family, also with him is his mother, Susan. Susan was 65 and born in AL. Could this be part of the family you are looking for ?
