    3. Hi Rose, Sorry but I am the son of Owen Jackson from Missouri. I have never lived in Arkansas although from the looks of the countryside I was visiting looking for some genealogy links....I sure would have liked it. Where are you living now? 1. Jerry Freemon Matheny m. Nomai Morton between 1870-1880
    2. Dorothy Boynton
    3. Does anyone have ties to the Matheny family living in Sharp County between 1870-1880 to which a Jerry Freemon Matheny might belong? This person was born in Indiana in 1853. Nomai Morton was the daughter of Dr.Thomas Morton and his second wife Nancy Wolf Culp Morton. As far as I know Dr. Morton was living in Stone County at this time period but I believe that the Matheny male was from Sharp County because all of this surname that I find living in Mart, Texas where Nomia lived are shown as being born or from Sharp County, AR. Our family records say he went by the name of Freemon but the ONLY place I can find him is on the 1900 Texas Hill County Census in the household of Samuel Franklin Terry and he is listed as father-in-law, Jerry F. Matheny. Thomas Morton's estate papers lists an Arabella Matheny but does not give the connection. I believe she must be the granddaughter of Thomas and daughte of Nomia and Jerry F. Matheny. I do NOT find any record for her past the 1870 AR census where she is in her father's household. I believe she was not alive in 1899 when her father died and certainly not by 1900 where we find just her husband living with who I believe is the daughter. If anyone can connect me to the right Matheny family, I would certainly appreciate it. Dorothy Boynton dbton@yahoo.com

    1. Freemon Matheny m Neoma Morton about 1870 or so.
    2. Dorothy Boynton
    3. Can anyone help me with a Freemon Matheny (Matheney, Natheny, Natheney or any other spelling you can come up with) who married to a Neoma (Nemia) Morton. She was the daughter of Thomas Morton and his first wife Sarah Jane Beck. She was born 28 of Feb 1858 in AR. That is about all I really know. She did have a second marriage to someone with surname Terry. She had a daughter by one of these husbands. The daugher went by Arrie but I believe is was probably short for Arabella as that was a family name that was often used. This Arabella Matheny/Terry was named in her grandfather, Thomas Morton's, will. We have never been able to trace Neoma or Arrie at all. We think they were living in Texas when Thomas Morton died in 1889. Sarah Jane Beck Morton died about 1864 or so. Any ideas would be appreciated. db

    1. MARTHA VIOLA ROGERS & ARVID M. HOLT MARRIAGE
    2. ROBERT NICHOLSON
    3. The ancestry of Arvid M. Holt is well established. However, there have been questions over the past several years about the ancestry of Martha Viola Rogers. Thanks to research done by Dr. Cleatus Lewis, Martha Viola Rogers is apparently listed in the 1900 census of Sharp County, AR as Mattie V. Rogers, age 14 (born Nov. 1886), daughter of Charley A. Rogers and Manerva A. Rogers. The 1860 census for Sharp County, AR lists Charles A. Rogers as being the son of James M. Rogers and Martha Rogers. Martha Viola Rogers Holt died April 5, 1919 in Hugo, Choctaw County, Oklahoma. This Rogers family descends from the Doswell Rogers who is the subject of the book, "The Descendants of Doswell Rogers", by Eleanor Rogers Edmundson. The above James M. Rogers was killed at the Battle of Pea Ridge, AR in 1862. Robert Nicholson

    3. I have info on various Duke family daughters that married into the Haley/Hailey family. For those of you that are interested check out the Duke's of Cannon and Warren County TN.That may help getting beyond AR. Jerusha Lavicia Haley (d/o Barney B. &Jane Brewer Haley) married John Duke 15 Oct. 1852, Cannon Co. TN (book A2 pg 20) John Duke bn abt 1825 in TN. They had the following Children: 1. Monroe Duke bn abt. 1854, TN 2.Almedia Arabelle Duke bn Jan 13,1856, Cannon Co. Tn, died 20 May 1953, AR, m. in AR Alexander C. Jack 3.Benjamin Duke bn abt 1860 in TN 4.Sarah Duke bn abt 1868 in IL (this comes from various census records) 5.Mary Duke bn abt 1874 in AR (probably Izard or Sharp Co.) 6.Wiley Duke, bn about 1875 in AR John and Lavicy/Vicey Duke are found in the 1860 Cannon County Census, Trusdale PO, pg 325 Dewelling #568 J.A. Duke age 39 m. carpenter b. TN Lavicy age 24 f bn TN Monroe age 6 bn TN Elmeda (sic) 4 bn TN Benj. 5/12 m bn TN (note: Barney B. and Jane were living near them in Dwelling #570) I have not been able to find them in any census for 1870, also missing are parents Barney B. and Jane Brewer Haley, which leads me to speculate that they were traveling to AR about the 1870 census was being taken. I find them in 1880 census in Izard county (but no Barney B. & Jane). However there is another daughter of Barney B. and Jane that I found in the 1880 census for Izard Co. name of Sarah bn abt 1848 who m. John Elam. They also were in IL in 1868 as their first child Alice was bn in IL, however they went back to TN, because the last three children , Emma D. Elam bn abt 1870, Luella Elam bn abt 1872 and IderT. Elam bn abt 1874 were all bn in TN. But Sarah Elam shows up in Pleasant Hill twp,Izard County AR listed as a widow with the four young children living not far from her sister Lavicy and John Duke. Two Duke sisters also married a son of Barney B. and Jane and one Haley that I have not been able to connect to my Haley line. 1. David William VanBuren Haley (aka Venturian Haley) m.NRJ Duke 24 Oct. 1860 (They apear in the 1870 census Cannon Co. Tn District 5, Woodbury PO pg154, and in the 1880 census Cannon Co. Tn district 5 , pg 522) (son of Barney B. and Jane) 2. William V Haley. (aka "Van" Haley) m Sarah C. Duke 30 May 1877 per Book C. Cannon Co. Marriage records (this family stayed in TN) Hope this info helps some one, Ellen Tolleson Reesh

Dophus Duke, Otto Duke, Clarence Duke, Mae Duke (died 1938), Lily Faye, Virgil Lee Duke were all a part of the same family living in Evening Shade. 1. MARRIAGE OF MARTHA V. ROGERS & ARVID M. HOLT
    2. ROBERT NICHOLSON
    3. The book of Sharp County Marriage Records, by Joyce Hambleton Whitten, pertains to marriages in 1910 and earlier. The book has an alphabetical listing for the Grooms, which includes all the available information on the marriage license, etc., and then an index for the Bride-to-Groom for those searching by brides. In the Bride-to-Groom index, there is an entry for "Rogers, Martha V. - A. M. Holt". A. M. Holt is Arvid M. Holt and his ancestry is known. The mystery is who is Martha V. Rogers. There is no entry for this marriage in the Groom section of that book. Does anyone know the ancestry of Martha V. Rogers? Specifically, the information such as parents, bondsman, minister, etc. that appears in other such marriage records in this book. Robert Nicholson
