    1. [ARSHARP] Addison Nunn - Mt. Carmel Cemetery
    2. Judith Knight
    3. Hi Guys--I wonder if someone in the Sidney area could do me a big favor. My gggrandfather was Addison Harvey Nunn, Sr. He is buried in Mt. Carmel Cemetery. The date of his death both at the Sharp County site at usgenweb.org and in the transcription of the cemetery internees by the Batesville Genealogical Society is 14 October 1899 [the online source is probably from the microfiche of the transcription which would explain the same date]. Here's the rub--I just purchased the "Abstracts from the Sharp County Record Newspaper: Published in Evening Shade, Arkansas, 1890-1891" compilied by Desmond Walls. On page one from the Sharp County Record Thursday, January 2, 1890 is Addison Nunn's obituary. It gives his date of death as 15 December 1889. AH had a son but this obituary is referring to the elder Nunn. Further on in the volume is a notice of Asa Arnn as the administrator of the estate. Back to the favor--if someone is at Mt. Carmel sometime could you please verify this date of death? I would be most appreciative. I am sure the newspaper is right but cannot explain the other dates unless there was a simple transcription error made; I would have immediately thought tht was true except the month was also incorrect. Thanks, judy arnn-knight

    3. This is from a reply that I sent to someone else a day or so ago...I thought it might help those of you coming to Arkansas and wanting to do some research down here in Batesville. There are many local genealogical books are both the public library (White River Regional Library) and at the Lyon College Library. There is also a research room at the Old Independence Regional Museum here in Batesville. Photocopies at the library are, I believe, twenty-five cents a pop, while at the museum they are fifteen, and at Lyon, ten. Lyon College (it was Arkansas College until a few years ago) doesn't have much in the way of microfilm other than census records. They do, however, have an excellent supply of books on the area that aren't available anywhere else that I've found. They also have a small room that contains only books on this area, including Sharp, Lawrence, and other surrounding counties. There is microfilm of the old Batesville Daily Guard (in it's 125th year!) and the Weekly Record (also published by the Guard, but has been out of existence for about 15 years or so) at the WR Regional Library. However, the film was made by students learning how to microfilm items, and was put on that old "red" microfilm, and it isn't very good. In early 1982 the Guard offices were torched by a teen, and all of the old Newark papers that had been stored there, along with early issues of the Guard itself went up in flames. The paper has recovered, but the loss of those papers was great. The community pulled together and rounded up some older papers, but the loss was great. The old courthouse records are in the process of being transferred to the museum, where they are stored in a vault. They are working to de-acidify the papers, and storing them. They allow you access to the originals, though, to be handled with a pair of cotton gloves that they provide. They too, have a photocopier, and I think copies are fifteen cents each. There is also a microfilm printer/reader there, along with a few rolls of film...not a lot, but a good start! With the books that they have there, one can spend a day at least researching there. The White River Regional Library is open: Monday - noon - 8 p.m. (day-light savings time only, winter is noon 'til 5) Tuesday - Friday - 8:45 - 5:00 Saturday - 9 - noon The Lyon College Library is open, during the school term (summer hours are different, didn't get those): Monday - Thursday - 8 a.m. - midnight Friday - 8 a.m. - 5 Saturday - 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Sunday - 2 p.m. - midnight The Old Independence Regional Museum is open: Tuesday - Saturday - 9 a.m. - 4:30 Sunday - 1:30 - 4:00 and the Independence County Courthouse is open Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Hope this helps those of you coming to town...and I hope your stay will be a pleasant one!! : ) Regina Regina Creekmore Weaver [email protected] President, Batesville Genealogical Society http://www.rootsweb.com/~arwhite/BITBARK.html At 09:18 AM 4/22/01 -0500, you wrote: >I am going to Arkansas in the 1st of May.
