It seems as if the latest virus problem has calmed down, but it would only take one or two of you opening an attachment with a virus to set it off again. It is not over, but it has calmed down. Just this morning I received another on - and did as I suggest you do DELETED IT. Please remember: DO NOT OPEN ANY ATTACHMENT unless you know 100% what it is and who is from and have run a virus scan on it. I don't care how inviting the subject line is, "homepage", "Read this", "The Docs you ask for", etc. . Also please remember that this virus is not being spread via Rootsweb, but is being spread via attachments that are being sent out by rootsweb members. If you want additional information on what a virus is go to http://ca.com/virusinfo/faq.htm it is an informative site. If you don't have a good Virus Scan, I use Norton Anti virus, you need to get one that you trust and fast. If you are not sure what kind to get, you might want to join the virus discussion list to get additional information on the different programs. [email protected] Again, I appreciate your support as we have gone through the last month or so fighting this problem. I also appreciated your willingness to do all that is necessary to help me fight the problem. Kathleen Burnett List Mom
I was wondering if you might have and index for a George W. Goodman, born 1838, KY, father Joseph L Goodman, born 1818 Ky. This side of my family came from VA>KY>AR, originally to Marion County, but their settlement became a part of Baxter County when it formed in 1870 (i think 70). Anyway, I cannot find the death or burial records of either, my G or GG Grandfather. In Flippen's account or early Marion County, he talks about a George Goodman that left AR, after becoming disillusioned with farming, and went to Texas where he died. But, both had land right where the Buffalo and White Rivers join, not far from Buffalo City, according to the land records of the 1800's. I'm wondering if they could've been buried in another county of AR. My Goodman line was all over the northcentral part of AR after they arrived and for 3 generations after. I cannot find these two guys anywhere, after abt.1872, when my Grandfather, Tate, was born in Baxter County. They would not have b! een extremely old. Most of our ancestors lived well up into their late 70's to late 80's. If you can some how help us with this, we would be extremely greatful. We have searched and searched. I am unsubscribing while I will be gone on vacation for the next week. I am excited because it's a chance to do some serious documentation hunting at the courthouse while on vacation for the next several days... Will subscribe when I get back! Don't forget, Memorial Day is coming up... while we're decorating our loved ones' graves, let's look for a lonely grave and put a flower on it. Do it for the deceased loved ones who would have placed flowers, had they been able to. Some of you will see my father at PERRY CEMETERY on Saturday... His name is JOHNY W. SCONCE... it'll be a first time for him to be there for the decoration time, and he's really excited! Take good care of him! Lest we forget.... Lanita Sconce Miller Wichita, KS
If you are talking about the death index that lists the death certificates held by the Bureau of Vital Statistics in Little Rock, then Anne is right. Death certificates were not officially recorded until February 1912-and even then, for years, not all deaths were officially recorded. I found a news clipping in the family bible which I thought might be of interest. The clipping has no indication of the newspaper in which the letter was printed. "Civil War Letter Hardy -- J.W. Weaver (John Wesley WEAVER), who lives northeast of here, has a letter dated June 1, 1864, and writen (sic) to his father, Allen Weaver, by the captain of his company, who was in the Confederate military prison at Macon, Ga. The letter follows: 'Dear Friend Allen: I have written to all of the company nearly and have not received but one letter, and that was from the orderly. I am well, although I have been in prison for seven months. I have already come to the conclusion that I am forgotten by all. I have waited patiently for an exchange, but it seems that our government has forgotten the unlucky men who have been so unfortunate as to be captured. I still live in hopes, if I die in despair. You must excuse my bad writing, for I have to hold the paper in one hand, the pen in the other, and sit on the ground under the floor of a building -- a nice comfortable place. There are 1,172 officers in the lot here, including four brigadier generals. Write soon. 'I have the pleasure to be yours, etc. J.C. Martin, Capt. 1st Tennessee Artillery' " Allen WEAVER (my gggrandfather) served in the 1st Tennessee Light Artillery in the U.S. army during the Civil War. He was living in Knox Co., TN, and relocated to Sharp County after the war. ===== Fred Middleton [email protected] __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Correction to web previously posted. in the web use "maps", not map. www.ahtd.state.ar.us/maps.htm Also some of the county maps will be depicted with the North being to the left, instead of to the top of the monitor. Guess they were made this way due to the shape of some counties. Sharp county is one of these that north will be to the left of the monitor. For some I downloaded to a 3.5 disc and took the disc to Kinko's and printed a 11"X18" sheet which works pretty well for finding exact locations using legal descriptions. Think the map would have to be printed using a blueprint size printer to get the original size for a given county. Regards, Chas .
Chas, Thanks, The 1936 map was what I was looking for. I could take pieces out and blow them up and print them out. This be a great help on locating tracts of land. The cemeteries do not show up good on the old maps But the new one shows lots of them. I will check out the one you mentioned. Yes, there is a book on Sharp County Cemeteries...I'm not sure when it was updated last, but I've got one. I've also got the "Lawrence County, Arkansas Loose Probate Papers 1815 - 1890" compiled by Dr. Marion Stark Craig that lists these WASSON folks: Ann E. Ann Eliza Clasrissa J. Clarissa Jane E.P. My grandparents still live in the area and I try to get up there frequently (I only live about 35 minutes away). Most of my folks are buried in either Campground, Lancaster (in Lawrence county), Sullivan, Ware and Fairview, just to name a few of the ones close there. Arkansas Land Records and the listings of Lawrence County cemeteries are both on-line. The cemeteries are at Nancy Matthew's page http://www.insolwwb.net/~nlmatthews/cemetery.htm . One place to find land records is through the 'search land patents' at http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/ and another is http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/arkland/arkland.pl which will lead you to the records found at http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/arkland/arkland.pl Hopefully these will help you find a few things...and let me know if you're in this area soon - sounds as if we've got a few ancestors in common! I have been researching locations around Williford so have been following the dialogue about cemeteries around Calamine. Below are two web sites I have used with some success. www.ahtd.state.ar.us/map.htm They have county historical maps published in 1936 for all counties. Range, township and section lines are shown. The Sharp county map lists a cemetery about a mile or two Northeast of Calamine off AR route 115. www.topozone.com Their 1:25,000 map size of the area depicts a cemetery at the description listed on an earlier message North of Calamine about a mile or so. Cemetery not named as most are on the topozone maps. The range, township and sections are listed on topozone but much harder to find in the way depicted. Regards, Chas
Lew, Thanks I found some land purchases made by what I think is some of my relatives but I will need a Township map with sections to be able to figure out where this land is. I was hoping this would lead to the closest cemetery or maybe a family plot. Regina, I am not sure now when I am going to come up but will let you know. Thanks for the page addresses. I need to do some more research before visiting cemeteries.
