Good Morning, I believe that I have found a clue to my John D. FERGUSON, through the William S. SHANKS family. It seems that Mr. Shanks married a widow, Mary Ann HERRING FERGUSON, and they lived around Cave City. John was listed living in their home, as a teen. I received the following message from the message boards at Rootsweb, and I have had no success in locating where John D. fit into the over-all picture of the FERGUSON family,so I believe this is my best bet.: "Hi Jean, Well, I goofed, partially. There is a Ferguson connection - William S. Shanks (Jr) was widdowed twice and he moved to Independence Co., Ark. He married Mary Ann (Herring) Ferguson in 1857. They had a son, Andrew B. Shanks. (And I'd like to learn about him.) This woman, Mary Ann (Herring)Ferguson/Shanks is buried at Cave City Cemetery, Sharp Co., AR - she died in 1896. I have no information about her Ferguson husband or who this John Ferguson was, etc. Sorry. William S. Shanks, Jr. died in Aug. 1876. (Haven't found a grave for him.) This Wm. Jr. had kids: John W. (left in Tenn I believe - lost after 1860), William - b. 1842, died 1860, Joel R. (mine) b. 1830, died 1914, Robert D., b. 1833- died Jan. 1860, Levi D., b. 1835, died before 1900 Marion C., AR, Lucy F. died unknown, Permelia Ardean b. 1839, married 1st Cleveland Hotchkiss in 1855 7 2nd Robert Brummet in 1867. Finally there was Andrew B. Shanks, born 10-19-1858 - died 10-13-1912. Married 7 Jan. 1886 Sharp Co., AR to Rena Johns. (there's a son buried near him: Wm. b. 11-4-1888, died 12-13-1919 - have no data on him either.) Can you tell me about your Ferguson? Thanks. Joan " If any of these folks ring a bell with you, please contact me. Joan and I both would benefit from hearing from you. Thanks! Jean Mayfield Cuevas

Hi Tootie: You do a great job with this list. I understand about the mix-ups. I find my ancestors with the wrong dates and names. One set is even in a book. I called the author and he told me that he was sorry but thats all the info he had. I also had Sharps in Sharp County. Mine came from Samuel G. Sharp and Lucinda (Sharp) maiden name also Sharp. These folks came from Morgan Co. AL about 1847, moved to Independence Co. aboput 1847. When the line changed about 1873 (I think) they were also in Sharp County in the NW corner. I have also worked hard on all my lines and do take note if something is a theory and not final proof. I was at your Watermelon Festival one year and lots of Sharps were there but none of mine. Happy Haunting, Marian

Dear List Friends, It has come to our attention, for the last 3 years, that there is a website that has a great deal of errors and non documented information concerning the EPHRIAM SHARP and related families. This is the Ephriam Sharp line for which Sharp County, Arkansas was named. So, to be fair and to try to correct some of the errors we cousins are offering a very abbrevated chart from John, Ephriam and William's father, down. Of course, it is only a skelton version and we did not include the notations, doucmentation, histories and proof of material, that would have taken up a lot of pages. We have researched 30+ years on this line. We have it back to late 1600's but only want to show the descedancy from John to Ephriam and William who came to Arkansas. We are very willing to offer documentation upon request. The book that we intend to publish contains well over 500 pages at this time. So, you will understand the shorter version. Over the last few years we have received correspondances, telephone calls and e-mails asking to include certain material in this book. It is so often another line......because on the website is incorrect information. I would like to clear that up. Two line of SHARP's came early to the Sharp, Lawrence, Randolph and so on area. One was our line through John, by Ephriam and William H. Sharp. ANOTHER WAS THE SOLOMON SHARP LINE. They are not the same line and have no connection as far back as the late 1600's. Our line was from Indiana, before that Pennsylvania and so on. The particluar website that has the incorrect information shows that Ephriam is part of the Solomon Sharp line AND THAT IS NOT CORRECT. We have requested a correction.....none has been forthcoming in 3 years of requests. Yesterday was a particluarly sad day....an 84 year old lady called me and wanted to include her family in the book. She was sure, due to this particluar website, that her line was off Ephriam. But after visiting with her I realized she was from the Solomon Sharp line. This happens many times a month. I only hope this will help someone to get it correct. I will gladly offer documentation to the correct facts. We try to be purest with our research. Without proper documentation it is not added to our material. That is all we have to offer as Historical Reconstucionist. We are not perfect and are willing to discuss any problem you may find in out material. It would be so helpful if others held the same standards. Just a personal word It is very painful to see this website with my Father's death as 1964. My Father Homer Sharp fell dead at my Mother's feet and left her with 7 children to raise alone in "1948". Please accept my appologize if this post offends you. My brother's, sister's and other relatives find this website very offensive and I think you would also. Ira Sharp Dennis (Tootie) and Tom Sharp See attachment below. Was Mt. Carmel ever referred to as "Batesville Cemetery?" My ggf is buried there, I've visited and taken a photo of the stone. But in "Confederate Soldiers Buried in Arkansas" by Rena Marie Knight, he's listed as being buried in Batesville Cemetery, Independence Co. He died in 1920. Is anyone familiar with Sloan's Creek which is off of the Strawberry River near Evening Shade? I believe my ggg-grands, Alfred L. Sloan and Jane Thomson Sloan farmed there after they were married in 1829. I cannot find the cemetery where they are buried and wonder if it could be on their land. Also, what is in this area now?

This is what I have on Casel. Let me know if you want the lineage also. Mildred Maxville - April 1932 Died on the 18th, C.S. Shirley of pneumonia. He was born May 4th, 1876 was a member of the Christian Church, and was a respected citizen. He married Miss Nettie Ring and there were five sons and two daughters. They are Clarence, Ethel, Ozro, Audie, Corbett, Mrs. J.N. Kent and Mrs. Fred Ring. Elder D.E. Barnett of Poughkeepsie conducted the funeral services in the presence of a large assembly. This came from a newspaper article given to me by Linda Shirley Roberson, daughter of Wayne Shirley, ggranddaughter of Casel. Shirley Family Narrative History of the Shirleys Our Shirley relatives moved to Arkansas in the 1840's from Tennessee along with many other families. One of the first Shirleys to settle in the area that later became Sharp County was Aaron Shirley and his family, who settled in the area around Maxville in 1847. The 1850 census for Lawrence County (Sharp County wasn't created until later) lists several Shirley families around Piney Fork Township. Several Shirley sons show up in records for Matheny's Confederate Co. during the Civil War. These families were well established in the Maxville area by the time that our forebear was born in 1875. Casel Shirley The Shirley name first enters our branch through unusual circumstances. Casel Shirley was born Casel Norman on May 3, 1875, in Maxville, near Cave City, Arkansas. His exact parentage remains a mystery, but we do know that he is the illegitimate son of one of the teenaged daughters of Isaac Norman. His name in the 1880 census is listed as Casel Norman, and at that time he was raised in his grandfather's house. His mother was most likely Sarah Norman, who married Andrew J. Shirley on August 7, 1881 in Sharp County. However, there is a remote possibility that the mother is Mary T. Norman, who married George W. Shirley on January 16, 1881. In 1875, Sarah would have been about 17, and Mary would have been 12. On Casel's death certificate, his mother is listed as Nancy Norman but she would have been 6 in 1875. Sarah, Mary and Nancy are all sisters appearing in Isaac Norman's household in 1880 along with grandson Casel, who is listed as such. As for his father, his name is listed as James Vance on the birth certificate. As this is a Norman family name (Isaac's wife's maiden name was Clarinda Vance), it is unclear whether this was Casel's real father or just a name inserted on the document. Also in 1880 there is a Vance family living on the property next to the Normans. Whatever the truth of his parentage, Casel adopted the name Shirley before his marriage in 1896. Casel lived all of his life in the Maxville area, where he farmed for a living. He married Jean Nettie Ring ( real name ) on October 8,1896 in Sharp County. Both the bride and groom were 20 years old, and the marriage was performed by D.C. Ring, magistrate and witnessed by H.H. Ring. Casel died of pneumonia on April 17, 1932, after a two-year illness. He is buried in Maxville Cemetery, Maxville, Arkansas. Casel and Nettie had seven children that survived infancy.
I also have in my Duncan lineage Shirley. Myrvin
I would like the information on Casel Shirley family. I am researching the Ring lineage. My greatgrandmother was a Ring. One of Joseph Ring's daughter. Myrvin G. Harris
Hi Sam and Donna; Casel Norman was the son of Sarah Norman ,daughter of Isaac and Clarinda Norman.
