John, I haven't done a lot with this line yet and the information I have is not confirmed. This is information from family only. Lettie Finn is my great grandmother. I have that Lettie Finn and Martha were sisters but Lettie's parents were Joseph Wesley Ragan and Sarah Rye. I do have that Joseph was first married to a Sally Turner. I have also been given information that Lettie was one of 12 siblings. Again, the only thing I can confirm is that Lettie's father was Joseph Wesley Ragan, she was born 15 Mar 1854 and died 2 Oct 1936. She is buried in Lunenburg Cemetery. She was married to Henry Clay Shannon in Lunenburg, Izard Co., AR. So it looks like we are related and now I am anxious to start digging into this line a little deeper. You've raised some questions I need to pursue. Bev > Bev, > I'm related to Martha Ragan. She was born in 1842 and married James Frederick Carter, who was born 7-7-1857. They are my gr-gr-grandparents. I have that her parents are Joseph Wesley Ragan (born 1806) and Rachel Turner. > Are we related? > John Haley > > > > >From: "Beverly Cooper" <[email protected]> > >Date: Sat, 29 Sep 2001 23:09:32 -0500 > >To: [email protected] > >Subject: Re: [ARSHARP] Where is Everyone > > > >John, > >Which Ragans are you related to? Dear List Members, Here it is the end September and time for the Third Quarterly Report for 2001. This past month has been a difficult time for all of us, but we made it through it and each of us are trying to get back to normal, or as normal as we can again. Part of that getting back to normal is our quarterly reports. Again, for your information, the ARSHARP Mailing List has 159 members, 113 on the Regular list and there are 46 members on the Digest List. If you are interested in knowing about other mailing list out there, one of the very best inventories of genealogical mailing lists is John Fullers Genealogy Resources on the Internet located at http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail.html If you ever need to unsubscribe from this list or any rootsweb list all you need to do is visit Password Central located at http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ Follow the instructions and you will received an e-mail of all lists you belong to and from it you can unsubscribe from the ones you want to. Always know that I will be more than happy to help you if you are having problems unsubscribing, you only need to ask. If you would like to visit the Archived messages of this list, go to http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ and type in the name of the list you would like to search. There are a few items I would like to suggest for the benefit of each of us. 1. If someone posts a message to the list that should not have been posted, please just delete it. Know that I am taking care of the problem. If you post your unhappiness, then you just continue on the problem. I know it is hard when your heart has been offended, but for my sake, and the sake of the list, please just delete it. Rootsweb has a wonderful Spam Detective and it stops most of it. You should see what comes across my screen. I have to look at each of them to make sure that what was stopped was truly Spam. Once in a while, one slips by though and if this happens, just delete it and go on with what we all love, genealogical research. 2. If you would put the subject of your posting in the subject line it might give you a better chance to attract the attention of someone who has the information you are looking for or the attention of someone who is searching for the information you are posting. 3. Remember to change the Subject line when you change the topic of the posting. It is confusing to me and the member when your subject line has nothing to do with your posting. Most likely it will get deleted and you will not get the response you are looking for. 3. Please remember to delete the tags and un-needed words when you re-send a message to the list with your answer. If you don't check this, your responses can become quite large and may cause problems with some of our member's servers. This member who might not be able to receive your message because of its size, just might be your long lost second cousin with all the answers you are looking for. 4. The wonderful relationship that develops between list members is also one of a Mailing Lists Problems. I encourage you to respond to the entire list with genealogical responses, you never know who your response will help. In the same thought I would like to ask you to not respond to the entire list with personal responses. Such as, the first message from a member says "Happy Birthday Mary" and then Mary says "Thank you and then about 60 of our members also send "Happy Birthday Mary". Mary then sends out 60 more "Thank You" messages. This is what I mean by personal messages. Just keep in mind anything is ok to be posted as long as it has to do with the subject of the list. If you have a doubt ask me. [email protected] 5. Remember to keep your Virus protection up to date and never open any attached file unless you are 100% sure what it is and even then you are taking a chance. Please remember, so that this list is better for each of us, the posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, flames, etc., in other words Spam is NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal. Consideration for exceptions, contact me at [email protected] If one of these items come across the list, just delete it, do not respond to it. I am taking care of the problem, quietly behind the scenes. I want to thank each of you for your continued support of me and your willingness to help make this list the success it is. This, from a Canadian newspaper, is worth sharing. America: The Good Neighbor. Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television commentator. What follows is the full text of his trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional Record: "This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth. Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out the debris of war by the American who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States. When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it. When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped. The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, war-mongering Americans. I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes? Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles. You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon - not once, but several times and safely home again. You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store windows for everybody to look at. Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here. When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke. I can name you 5000 times when the American raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the American in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake. Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those." Stand proud, America! | Good morning! We silly people seem to think that we have control of our | lives, but sorrow such as this reminds us that we NEED God. I am so | thankful that the hearts of the people are turning back to God. | | This came across my desk this morning and I thought that you would want to | know about it. | | May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so | that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. | Romans 15:13 | | Love, | Debbie | | -----Original Message----- | | In response to the Columbine tragedy, Sesame Street Workshop developed a | website, "Tragic Times, Healing Words" website on helping children cope | with disaster. Click here to view an | incredibly inspiring photo of firemen raising the flag in the wreckage of | the World Trade Center - | http://www.clarionledger.com/news/0109/12/scene07.html | | AFA has just learned that a student at the University of Illinois has | suggested that tomorrow, September 13, be US PRIDE DAY FOR ALL THE PEOPLE | WHO WERE LOST IN THE TRAGEDY OF THE TERROIST ATTACKS. Everyone wear US | colors and try to be wearing as much red, white, and blue as you can. | Send this message to as many other people you know. Let's get the whole | country into it. | | Yesterday, in the wake of what has been called bloodiest day in the | history of our nation, America was brought to its knees. No, not in | submission to the cowardly barbarism of a vicious, foreign enemy. America | was brought to her knees in prayer. | | We solicited responses via the web and e-mail asking for information on | special prayer gatherings going on around our nation in response to this | tragedy. We were inundated with such responses. You notified us of | meetings sponsored by churches, ministerial associations, universities and | colleges, even entire cities. Responses came from virtually every state in | the nation as well as Canada. | | Here is just a sampling of the kinds of meetings that went on last evening | and, in many cases, are continuing today. | | "Dear AFA, | The Catholic TV station, EWTN, is having constant prayers and holy hours | and masses said for the victims, for America, and for our elected | officials. You can look them up at www.ewtn.com. Many masses are being | offered in every Catholic diocese across the Nation. | Michael Walsh | National Cops For Life | Florida, New York" | | "Many of the churches in the Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, North Carolina, | area had prayer vigils last night (Tues.) and will have them again tonight | (Wed.). Our church, Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Pittsboro, NC, will have | one tonight, and we attended one at another Pittsboro church last night." | | "Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minnesota: | The Metrodome has been set aside for a time of prayer from 6-8pm this | upcoming Sunday evening, September 16. Parking will be free." | | "Here in New Martinsville, WV, the doors were opened at First United | Methodist Church for prayer this morning and remained open all day. A | prayer service was held this evening as well for the entire community." | | "The Beardstown, Illinois Ministerial Association is holding a prayer | vigil tonight (Sept 11) at the First Christian Church in Beardstown IL to | pray for the victims of this tragedy as well as for this nation." | | "Dear AFA: | Many churches in our central Wisconsin area are holding services of prayer | at their churches tonight. I don't have a list of them, but some of the | cities that are holding services are: Abbotsford, Colby, Medford, | Stratford, Marshfield, Wausau, and Antigo. Our church, Abbotsofrd | Evangelical Free Church, is having a prayer meeting at 7:00 PM this | evening. It's wonderful to see America going before the Lord with this | very serious situation." | | "All of the Methodist Churches in the Lafayette, LA area held prayer | services today for the victims and families of the terrorist attack. Our | church, Asbury United Methodist of Lafayette, will keep a candle burning | on the altar and will keep the church open for prayer for the next several | days. There were over 100 people in our prayer service at 5:30 today...I | don't have information on the number of people at the other churches. The | Catholic churches are also all open for prayer and one that I know of was | holding a prayer service today...I'm sure there were others, too. God | bless America. AFR will play a big role in keeping our focus on God. I | will pray for you, too." | | "At Middlebury College in Middlebury Vermont: | Mead Chapel will be open throughout the evening for those who wish to | gather in silent reflection and prayer. There will be a Christian prayer | service in Gifford Annex Lounge at 7:30 tonight." | | "Since the January Inauguration of President Bush 10,000 Americans have | agreed to pray and fast once a month for the President, his cabinent and | family. This network is now fasting for one or more of the next 7 days and | asking for the Lord to bring Biblical wisdom to our leaders. For more | info see: heartlight.org/fast/" | | "In light of the recent catastrophic events we will be having a Community | Wide Prayer Vigil tomorrow, Wednesday September 12 from 11:30 am to 1:30 | pm at Church At The Crossroads on 203 East Main Street, Ahoskie NC | 252-209-8900. Please get the word out to any all your friends, co-workers, | and other churches in the area. People may feel free to bring their | lunches with them to Crossroads." | | "Springlake-Earth Communities --- COMMUNITY PRAYER MEETING...TONIGHT - | SEPT. 11 @ 6:30 PM | Location: Springlake-Earth School Cafeteria" | | "We are very close to Warner Robins, AFB , just south of Macon, GA., one | of the nation's largest military installations. We will be having a prayer | meeting tonight, Tuesday, at 7:00 PM. First Baptist Church, 209 S. Miller | St. Fort Valley, GA 31030" | | "East Central Community College in Decatur, Mississippi | Faculty & Staff came together at 10:45 a.m. to pray for our Country and | the tragedy. Faculty, Staff and Students will meet again at 2 p.m. today | for prayer." | | Again, this is merely a smattering of the hundreds of responses we | received. American Family Association encourages all Christians to | continue this prayer vigil on behalf of our great nation. | | The death toll will likely number in the thousands. The devastation this | carnage has brought to families across our nation and, indeed, the world | will be felt for generations. Yet, in the midst of this unimaginable chaos | and disorder, we have to believe that, just as in the creation account in | Genesis 1:2, the Presence of God abides with us and the Word of God stands | firm. God will speak into the dark void of this tragic situation with a | Word that will bring light, hope and healing. Pray that we will have ears | to hear and eyes to see, and that as the body of Christ, we can use this | present crisis as an opportunity to spread the Gospel. | | God bless America! | | ACTION NEEDED | | FLY THE FLAG!! | | The Flag of the United States - http://www.usflag.org/toc.html | | | WEAR THE COLORS | | Help us to promote tomorrow, September 13, as US PRIDE DAY FOR ALL THE | PEOPLE WHO WERE LOST IN THE TRAGEDY OF THE TERROIST ATTACKS.
