Marcia and Jean, I have an ancestor in Sharp County named Lucinda Adeline Craig. In one census, she was listed as L.A. In another she was Lucinda A and in another she was Adeline. She went by Adeline in her mature life. I think that she was called Adeline, but when the census taker asked for her name, the whole name was given and that is how Lucinda A got in there. Perhaps that is what happened to Melissa Caroline. Anne

    3. Marcia, Doesn't seem like her name would be different from one time to another, unless someone else gave the information (which I understand happened a lot). Thanks about the "greats". I will keep my eyes open. Hopefully, something or someone will come along to shed some light on this question! Jean C. 2. Jean Why would Melissa Caroline use a different name? Maybe she went by Caroline but I have read that they were instructed to give their first name on census? Could it be that simple? Yes if William A. Wiles is your great great grandfather then John would be your ggg uncle. I want to go back and look at the image of the 1910 census for Molissie and see if that W for widow didn't look a little different that others on the page. Maybe she is divorced. Don't be too surprised. I have divorce papers from 1853 for one of my gggg grandmothers. It happened back then. We just didn't talk about it <grin> Marcia

    3. Sorry, Marcia, I just caught this message today. I have two in my files, and would love to be able to merge them together, IF they are the same people. Wm. Lafayette WILES, b. 1859, d. 1949, m. Martha E. ROGERS on April 23, 1910. The Second Wm. Lafayette WILES, b. Nov 27, 1859, d. ?? , m. M. Caroline ENDSLEY. I have no other information on this couple. The birth dates would lead me to believe the men are the same person, and that he married twice, but I don't know! John was the brother to William A. (Alexander?) WILES. Wm's son, James Alexander WILES, had a daughter, Ruth Caroline WILES who was my dad's grandmother. I have a picture of her scanned, by the way, if you have any interest in seeing it. So, does that make John my 3rd gr uncle? I get lost when they get that far back! :) I have RICHEY connections through my JEFFERYS, as well. I presume that these folks are the same family, just differently spelled names? Your suspicion that M. Caroline and Mellisa C. may be the same person, probably is well founded. Wonder why she would use M. Caroline in one census, and all the other records have Mellisa C.? A whim? :) Jean C. There were two separate families in the Sharp County area and so far they have not been linked. One came from Kentucky and mine came from Tennessee. Of course it is possible that they linked in Virginia before 1810. Marcia

I asked if that was who and she said she was thinking so. I'm expecting to see her this week and will get back to you with the latest on that Endsley family and Wiles conection. 2. Jean I looked around this afternoon and noticed that another researcher has Caroline listed as a daughter of James and Jane ENDSLEY. So I decided to do some more research. 2. Jean What we know about Melissa C. ENDSLEY at this time is that she was born ca 1867 in Arkansas per census info and that her parents were James Haskell ENDSLEY and Jane Malinda NICHOLS. She was living in Sharp Co AR at the age of 3 in the 1870 census and the age of 13 in the 1880 census. All I know at this time about M. Caroline ENDSLEY is that she married William Lafayette WILES on Nov 8 1883 in Sharp Co AR. (At that time Melissa C. would be 16 so she could be her) Do you know ANYTHING else about M. Caroline? 2. Jean, I'm not sure, but this could be the Endsley that is the mother of Seth Thomas or James Haskell Endsley that I found in the 1880 census in Ash Flat (Richland Township). James Haskell was my gr-gr grandfather and the father of Seth Thomas Endsley. (I loaned my 1880 Census CD's to my cousin and haven't gotten them back yet. I sound dumb, I know). My mom was telling me she knows the Endsley's and the Wiles are related, but she wasn't sure how. If I recall correctly in the 1880 census, the mom in the Endsley family is showing as widowed with about 7 kids. 3. Also, you might consider the Lyons College in Batesville, as I hear that they have a good section of genealogy records. 3. I have been to the library in Hardy and the Ash Flat Court House. Both were very helpful. When taking pictures at the court house, you cannot use a flash. Make sure you take a camera on which you can turn the flash off. Also, if you can find someone that worked or taught in the schools up there they can be most helpful. I met Bartus Allen back in 87 the first time I went and he was able to get me started in the right direction. I found the staff at the court house to be most helpful. Have fun and good luck searching. 3. Hi Connie, There is a library in Hardy, Sharp Co., AR which has a genealogy section. The Court House in Ash Flat has Record Books which you can search, but not photocopy. You can take pictures of the pages with a camera. There is also a library in Evening Shade. I have not been the this one. They are open limited hours. There is a museum in Batesville which has a genealogy section. The library in Walnut Ridge over in Lawrence County has a good genealogy library and they are willing to assist you. I am planning to visit next spring and am looking for 1880 mortality schedules, 1870-1880 information on Smiths. I have census and homestead records but I know that one ancestor Braxton Smith who was 69 in 1870 must have died by 1880. But I can't find out when or anything on him. Would like to go look for obituaries, tax records, probate perhaps, cemetaries, etc. -- Connie Smith Kettle Falls, WA (northeast WA, Stevens County) Mail to:[email protected] ==== ARSHARP Mailing List ==== NOTICE: Posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, flames, etc. (in other words - spam) is NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal.
