I am researching many of the Lewis families found in Northwestern Arkansas in the early to mid 1800s in an effort to determine their relationships, if any. Here are the lines I have so far and some of my hypotheses which are not proved. Sorry but this is very long. 1. Earl/Earle Eason Lewis b. between 1760-1770, presumed to be abt. 1770. He is found in Wayne Co., Tennessee in 1820, 1830 and in Crawford Co., Arkansas in 1840. He is the presumed father of : * Harriet b. abt 1800 in Kentucky and found in Scott Co., Arkansas in 1850 * Claibourn b. 1803 in Kentucky and found in Scott Co., Arkansas in 1850 * David E. b.1821 Wayne County, Tennessee and found in Scott Co., Arkansas in 1850 and possible father of: * James b. abt. 1807 in Kentucky found in Crawford Co., Arkansas in 1850 * Mary b. abt. 1809 in Kentucky found in Crawford Co., Arkansas in 1850 * Joseph F. Lewis b. abt 1825 in Tennessee found in Crawford Co., Arkansas in 1850 I think James M. Lewis b. bef. 1825 in Kentucky m. Catherine McCurdy may be the son James listed as a possible son of Earl/Earle Eason Lewis. Peyton Lewis b. 1812 possibly in Tennessee may also be a son of Earl since James M. Lewis was the administrator of his estate in 1847. Peyton was married to Mary Ellen Lewis (mentioned below in #3). 2. John Lewis b. between 1760-1770. He is found living in Crawford County, Missouri in 1830 and Ripley County, Missouri in 1840. His sons, Henry and Elijah are in Crawford County, Arkansas in 1850. It is possible this John Lewis is the same John Lewis in 3. below. Living near by in 1830 in Ripley County, Missouri is Samuel Lewis b. Bet. 1770 - 1780 and his possible sons: Samuel Jr. b. abt 1803, William b. abt. 1805, and Dennis b. abt. 1811. I believe John and Samuel may be brothers. John's presumed to be the father of: * Henry b. abt. 1790 in Kentucky and found in Crawford Co, Missouri in 1830, Ripley Co., Missouri in 1840 and Crawford County, Arkansas in 1850 * Elijah b. abt 1802 in Kentucky and found in Crawford Co, Missouri in 1830, Ripley Co., Missouri in 1840 and Crawford County, Arkansas in 1850 * John b. abt. 1805 found n Crawford Co, Missouri in 1830, Ripley Co., Missouri in 1840 3. This John Lewis's father is said to have been Hugh or John Lewis. John Lewis supposedly moved from Kentucky to Washington County, Missouri in abt. 1804 however Washington County didn't exist then. In 1834 Washington, Ripley, and Crawford County, Missouri were adjacent to one another, which makes me wonder if this John Lewis and the John Lewis (2. above) b. bet. 1760-1770 and father of Henry, Elijah, and John are one and the same person. This John Lewis is the father of: * Joseph C. Lewis b. May 8, 1802 in Livingston County, Kentucky and found in Hempstead, Arkansas Territory in 1830, and Prairie Co., Arkansas in 1840 & 1850 * Hugh Lewis b. abt. 1804 in Missouri and found in Hempstead, Arkansas Territory in 1830, and Washington Co., Arkansas in 1840 & 1850 and possibly: * Mary Ellen Lewis b. abt. 1814 in Tennessee and found in Washington Co., Arkansas abt. 1834 where she married Peyton Lewis (possible son of Earl #1 above) and is found in Washington Co., Arkansas in 1850 after Peyton's death living near Hugh Lewis. She supposedly married a cousin. 4. John Lewis b. 1807 in Tennessee m. Marian Coulter and found living in Washington County, Arkansas in 1840, 1850, and 1860. 5. Stephen Decatur Lewis b. June 7, 1807 Jessamine County, Kentucky supposedly to William Peyton Lewis b. abt. 1767, m. Lydia Bains Potts. Stephen was a large land owner in Pope County, Arkansas in the 1840s and 1850s. He was in Conway County, Arkansas in 1850, and Pope County, Arkansas in 1860. 6. Zachariah Lewis b. abt. 1774 in North Carolina, m Rachel Brackin. He died in North Carolina. His wife then married Peter Mankins and they brought the family to Washington County, Arkansas where Zachariah's children, George Washington, Lydia, and Brackin are listed in 1840 and 1850. 7. Samuel Lewis b. abt. 1801 in Tennessee m. Bricey Holt and they were living in Vineyard, Washington Co., Arkansas in 1830, 1840, and 1850. 8. William Lewis b. bet. 1810-1820 and found in Scott County, Arkansas in 1840. 9. Dennis Lewis b. abt. 1811 in Tennessee m. Hester Shipman found in Carroll County, Arkansas in 1840, 1850, and 1860. He may be the Dennis Lewis found in Crawford County, Missouri in 1830 living near Samuel Lewis, Jr. b. abt Abt. 1803, and in the same county as William Lewis b.abt. 1805, and Samuel Lewis b. Bet. 1770 - 1780. I am wondering if the elder Samuel Lewis is his father and the others just listed are his brothers. I also wonder whether the elder Samuel Lewis is a brother or other close relative of John Lewis (2. above) since they are found in the same county in Missouri in 1830. Other researchers list this Dennis as a brother of George W. Lewis b. Bet. 1812 - 1815 in Tennessee who settled in Conway County, Arkansas and Carroll Lewis who was b. abt. 1815 in Virginia and d. 1865 in Tennessee but I question whether this is true. 10. James Lewis b. Bet. 1800-1810 and found in Washington County, Arkansas in 1840. He had five children listed in 1840 b. bet. 1825-1840. He was living 3 residences from George Lewis and 5 residences from Bracken Lewis, sons of Zachariah Lewis (6 above). 11. James Willis Lewis b. abt 1800 is found living in Crawford County, Arkansas by 1836 and in 1840. I believe he is then found in Arkansas County, Arkansas in 1850 and in his wife Elizabeth is in Freestone County, Texas in 1860. 12. John Wesley Lewis b. abt 1819 in North Carolina, m. Rachel E. [--?--]. They are found in Sebastian County, Arkansas in 1880 and many of their children are found there in 1900 living together without their parents. 13. Obadiah / Obediah Lewis b. abt. 1810 in Tennessee, m. Margaret [--?--]. He may be a relative of John Lewis (#2 above and or the elder Samuel Lewis mentioned in # 2 and 9 above) since he is found living in Ripley County, Missouri in 1840 just as both John and Samuel were, and in Boon County, Arkansas in 1850. 14. Sciotha Lewis b. abt. 1815 in Kentucky, m. Mary [--?--]. He was in Washington County, Arkansas in 1840 and 1850. Information on the descendants of these people can be found in my Rootsweb database file: burgess_kimes http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=SHOW&db=burgess_kimes -- Susan Kimes Burgess Fremont, CA [email protected]
Susan, #7, Samuel Lewis b. about 1801 is my GG Grandfather. A cousin who is also a professional geneoalogist did research on him & says that he was born in NC, the son of James LEWIS. James LEWIS was Welsh, but had lived in Ireland since an infant in Kilkenny,Ireland before coming to the U.S. Samuel's wife Bricie b. 1804, was my GG Grandmother & was born in TN. Her father was an Irby HOLT, who never married her mother. Her mother was a mixed blood Cherokee by the last name of LITTLE/LYTLE, but her first name is not known. He was brought to court & charged with bastardy for fathering an illegitimate female child (one Bricie LITTLE) with an unnamed LITTLE woman. Irby HOLT was a circuit riding Methodist preacher. This is what Joyce Reece, the genealogist who did the research found out for us. This is all I know of Samuel LEWIS and Bricie, my GG Grandparents. He is found living in Crawford County, Missouri in 1830 and Ripley County, Missouri in 1840. His sons, Henry and Elijah are in Crawford County, Arkansas in 1850.
