    2. This information is taken from a book titled, "The Fort Smith National Cemetery", prepared under the direction of The Quartermaster General, US Army, 1942…. On Belle Point, 360 feet south and 100 paces west of the initial point or monument marking the dividing line of Arkansas and the Choctaw Nation a stockade fort was built by soldiers under the command of Major Bradford. No record has been found of the names of the men that accompanied Major Bradford to Fort Smith in 1817. The following names were men who were with the command in February 1822, when pursuant to the Army Reorganization Act of 2 March 1821, the Rifle Regiment was discontinued and the soldiers at Fort Smith were absorbed in Companies of the 7th Infantry………. There was also a Surgeon named Thomas Russell . He was Post Surgeon from 1818 until his death at Fort Smith 24 August 1819.
