This was first posted to Scott County with very good results, however many of these men were apparently from Sebastian County. Any help will be appreciated. The following is a partial listing of men who joined the First Arkansas Union Infantry at Jenny Lind (or Fort Smith) on 1 Sept 1863, after the Battle of Devils Backbone. Both Union and CSA records agree that a large number of neutral men and Union sympathizers (some sources say under a death sentence) along with their guards broke and ran to the Federal lines during this engagement and many of them joined the Union Army that same day. I am testing the theory that most of those named below were among those men. I have identified many of these men as being from northern Scott County (including the area now in Logan) and others were from Sebastian County. A few may have been from Franklin or Yell County. Many of them are completely unknown to me. If anyone recognizes any of these soldiers and can provide any information about where they lived and or why they joined the Union Army, I would appreciate the information. There was also another wave of enrollments the following month (they are not named here), some of whom were members of (or neighbors to) some of the listed families. Many of them had first been in the CSA. Were they the guards? Thanks, John Dill johndill@ipa.net William Ake Edward Barbee Right Beakley Josiah Beasley Elisha Blankenship William Bradley Andrew J.
