    3. Hi: Fran Alverson is going through some old Van Buren newspapers. I'll be forwarding some of them to the Sebastian list since it is just across the river - interesting reading. Regards, Nan 71532.734@compuserve.com -------------Forwarded Message----------------- From: INTERNET:ARCRAWFO-L@rootsweb.com, INTERNET:ARCRAWFO-L@rootsweb.com To: [unknown], INTERNET:ARCRAWFO-L@rootsweb.com Date: 8/6/00 7:08 PM RE: Arkansas Intelligencer April 26, 1845 Van Buren Crawford County, Arkansas April 26, 1845 Harvey Wyatte, who was charged with passing counterfeit half eagles in the Cherokee Nation, and taken to Little Rock for trial before the U. S. District Court, has been aquitted because he has become an Indian-that is, being a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, though a white man, yet as such, a citizen, he was discharged on the ground that the U. S. District Court had no jurisdiction of offenses committed by one Indian upon another. It is only necessary, then, for a white man "to take up" with an Indian woman in order to clear himself from being amenable to the laws of the U. S. District Court, who jurisdiction only extends over but does not act within the Indian Country. April 26, 1845 Another Brother Press We understand that a citizen of this place has gone eastward to buy a Press for the purpose of establishing a paper at Fort Smith. This speaks well for the increase of improvement in Old Crawford, which will then be pretty well supplied with paper reading. The more the merrier, etc. April 26, 1845 A CARD The undersigned, having been of late much harassed by some of his creditors, and owing to the scarcity of money, and the impossibility to collect the debts due himself, has been forced in order to save his property from sacrifice, to avail himself of all the delays which the laws of this State allow him towards his creditors that such delay, not being his wish, but imperious necessity has forced him to it. And that he has ample and sufficient property to satisfy them if they will take his property almost at their own price. I will give notes and accounts at half their value, and property I have, at two thirds of its appraised value, may my disinterested persons. DANIEL WILSON.
