"In a treaty made with the Arkansas Cherokees on 6 May 1828, aka 'The Sequoyah Treaty' chiefs and headmen west of the Mississippi relinquished their claim to Arkansas lands in exchange for 7 million acres, commonly referred to as Indian Territory. Cherokees and white men with Cherokee families that enrolled prior to June 1832 were paid for detailed assessments to their improvements.
