I am trying to determine if the person in the below article is my great grandfather - John J. POOL. How can I get more data on the "Doyle place" mentioned in the article? Lawrence D. Pool Tucson, AZ ------------------------------------ Scott County Newspapers The first newspaper known to be published in Scott County was "The Reformer," published from 1872 to 1874. Next was "The News," begun in 1878. The earliest extant newspapers I've been able to locate are one issue from 1887 and four issues from 1888. These are on microfilm available from the Arkansas History Commission. If anyone knows of the existence of other early Scott County newspapers, I would appreciate knowing about them. Local news items are abstracted below from selected issues of the Scott County newspapers. SCOTT COUNTY CITIZEN Waldron, Scott County, Ark., Friday, November 30, 1888 One Dollar Per Year Mr. John Poole, who lives on the Doyle place eight miles north of town, and whose fine horse was stolen last September, says he is informed by the sheriff of Independence county that the thief was riding the horse through that county about the 10th of this month, and a man rode up by his side and caught the halter-strap, intending to arrest the thief, but he cut the strap and galloped away.
