Does anyone on the list know who H.I. Falconer and J.P. Durden were in Sebastian Co., AR? Apparently they held an office in the county. I have this line from a biography and would like to know the meaning. "He was D. S. under H. I. Falconer, and D. Assessor under J. P. Durden." Could D. S. be Deputy Sheriff? Could D. Assessor be Deputy Assessor? Thanks Rose
Hi: Here is an editorial concerning the Union Refuge train mentioned in the previous message. Regards, Nan 71532.734@compuserve.com -------------Forwarded Message----------------- From: INTERNET:ARCRAWFO-L@rootsweb.com, INTERNET:ARCRAWFO-L@rootsweb.com To: [unknown], INTERNET:ARCRAWFO-L@rootsweb.com Date: 7/27/00 1:22 PM RE: Fort Smith Newspaper-Civil War Fort Smith - The New Era August 13, 1864 THE REFUGE TRAIN- It was the largest train that ever went North from this place and was composed of a better class of people than have gone heretofore. It was a sad sight to us, to see those who have been raised among the mountains and vallies of Arkansas leaving home which they have made by long years of toil, and turning thier faces to a strange land, not knowing that ever antother spot would be home to them, and as it were, having to begin life over again. This is but one of the results of the war which has been forced upon the Nation by a Slave Arristocracy. These refugees will for the most part become citizens of the new North-western States, adding to them wealth and prosperity, and making for themselves homes where they can follow the industrial arts, agriculture, & etc., in peace and quietude. Arkansas situated as it is, will be a battle ground during the existence of the rebellion, and be in an unsettled state long after the war is at an end thus keeping many persons who desire to make this their future home from returning. Truly, treason makes a fair field a desert. Hi: This was sent to the Crawford Co. list but I think all AR researchers would find it interesting. What was life like during the Civil War - were the farmers allowed to continue farming? This is what it was like for the Union sympathizers evidently. Among them were many of our best Union Citizens, farmers, and mechanics who remained here through the summer, hoping that they would be permitted to return to their homes and farms this fall; but the unsettled state of the country and scarcity of provisions make it necessary for them to winter in the North. Many, when the troubles are over, will come back to Arkansas, but most of them wil permanently settle in Kansas and the States of the North-west. Wynelle asked: >Were there any newspapers in Sebastian Co. or IT in 1894?< Wynelle: The Fort Smith library has the old newspapers - on microfilm I think. Contact them and they'll tell you what years they have. I believe Ft. Smith has never been without a paper since the 1840s - possibly earlier. If you are interested in buying microfilmed newspapers - that can be probably be done through the Univ. of Texas at Austin. I know they have microfilm for sale of Van Buren, AR newspapers. A friend has bought them. The earliest that she purchased was 1843. Regards, Nan 71532.734@compuserve.com
