Hi, I have ancestors who lived in the towns of Greenwood,Midland,Montreal and perhaps elsewhere in Sebadstian County. As I was attempting to find them in the Censuses of 1880 thfu 1910, I could not find any of these towns. They must have been part of some Township which how the Censuses are arranged. Could some kind soul tell me which Township or point me to a source of information? Hal (born in Midland)

Hi, Can anyone tell me how to get to Alma City Cemetery? I hope I have the name right it is located in the City of Alma, Arkansas. Thank you, Terry A. Barrett
Hi: Fran Alverson is going through some old Van Buren newspapers. I'll be forwarding some of them to the Sebastian list since it is just across the river - interesting reading. S. District Court, has been aquitted because he has become an Indian-that is, being a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, though a white man, yet as such, a citizen, he was discharged on the ground that the U. S. District Court had no jurisdiction of offenses committed by one Indian upon another. It is only necessary, then, for a white man "to take up" with an Indian woman in order to clear himself from being amenable to the laws of the U. S. District Court, who jurisdiction only extends over but does not act within the Indian Country. April 26, 1845 Another Brother Press We understand that a citizen of this place has gone eastward to buy a Press for the purpose of establishing a paper at Fort Smith. This speaks well for the increase of improvement in Old Crawford, which will then be pretty well supplied with paper reading. The more the merrier, etc. April 26, 1845 A CARD The undersigned, having been of late much harassed by some of his creditors, and owing to the scarcity of money, and the impossibility to collect the debts due himself, has been forced in order to save his property from sacrifice, to avail himself of all the delays which the laws of this State allow him towards his creditors that such delay, not being his wish, but imperious necessity has forced him to it. And that he has ample and sufficient property to satisfy them if they will take his property almost at their own price. I will give notes and accounts at half their value, and property I have, at two thirds of its appraised value, may my disinterested persons. DANIEL WILSON. Hi: This concerned Ft. Smith citizens also. Regards, Nan 71532.734@compuserve.com -------------Forwarded Message----------------- From: INTERNET:ARCRAWFO-L@rootsweb.com, INTERNET:ARCRAWFO-L@rootsweb.com To: [unknown], INTERNET:ARCRAWFO-L@rootsweb.com Date: 8/6/00 7:14 PM RE: May 10, 1845 Arkansas Intelligencer Arkansas Intelligencer, Van Buren, Crawford County, Arkansas May 10, 1845 NAVIGATION OF ARKANSAS RIVER We understand from the officers of steamboats that have recently visited our town, that the danger attending the navigation of this river, below Pine Bluffs, has been greatly lessened by the operation of the snag boats that have been at work in that portion of the river; removing the snags and trimming the timber overhanging the stream. The boats did nothing, it is said, higher than Pine Bluffs, on account of the want of funds, the appropriation that was made having been exhausted. This we exceedingly regret, as we are confident that with energy they might in one season render the river entirely safe between Napoleon and Fort Gibson. There is one great oversight in the management of the snag boats that have operated in this river, which is, that they have been under the command of men who were not residents of the State, and in no wise connected to its prosperity, and consequently could not take that lively interest which should actuate all who are engaged in so important a service. We do not mean to say that the gentlemen who have had command of the boats, failed in executing their dutiesas they thought promptly, but think that the aim and end of Government would have been sooner reached, by appointing to the charge of the boats, men who had a thorough knowledge of the navigation and its danger-Arkansas Pilots, who could go and superintend the building of boats of the right size and construction to operate at the low stages of water, when most good could be done; men who are interested in the work, and would take that interest which no stranger can feel. There are men of this class that are competent to fulfill the duties with benefit to the Government, for they know where the dangerous obstructions lie, and could work more to the advantage of the Government and the Steamboats. The boats are now under charge of men who come into our river and operate some two or three months, in the business season, when the waters are high, and leave as soon as Summer sets in, which is generally accompanied by low water, and is, therefore, the proper time for operations. We say let the citizens of the business towns look to this matter; let them take it in hand and make a proper investigation of the subject; and if they find that there is any mismanagement of the boats to properly represent them to the powers that be, and seek that remedy which surely cannot be denied them. We have not now the time and space to speak on this subject as we would wish, but will revert to it again at an early period. If anyone has access to Marriage records for Sebastian County I would appreciate a look up for a marriage record of Frank Clark, my grandfather from Jenny Lind. He was married 1st. to Nancy Booth in 1914, Nancy died in 1918 and he then married Etta Hadley in 1922. Between these 2 marriages he married again. I don't have any other information. Would like a name, please. alice
Hello List, Was wondering if there is 1880 or 1890 census information out there for this county. Trying to pin down some relatives. They would have been in this county or Washington County (don't know if these counties are close to eachother) Arkansas. I am trying to find the names of James Monroe Bridges born Sept 25, 1879 parent's. His death certificate lists unknown for both, which has been a real disappointment. He may have had a sister named Sarah Delilah Bridges as well. She was born April 25, 1877 (?) and died in Sebast. county April 26, 1922. I haven't been able to find the names for positive of her father, but believe her mother was Jane Booth born 1860.
