    3. Hi: Since Sebastian and Washington counties also bordered the INdian Country - I thought I'd send it to those lists also. Regards, Nan 71532.734@compuserve.com -------------Forwarded Message----------------- From: INTERNET:ARCRAWFO-L@rootsweb.com, INTERNET:ARCRAWFO-L@rootsweb.com To: [unknown], INTERNET:ARCRAWFO-L@rootsweb.com Date: 8/16/00 2:49 AM RE: July 13, 1859 Van Buren Press Van Buren Press Crawford County, Arkansas July 13, 1859 MURDER IN THE INDIAN COUNTRY News reached this place on Saturday last that a man by the name of Hurst stabbed brothers, Frank and Wharton Rector, on the 4th of July near Fort Arbuckle in the Indian Country. Horton Rector, we are informed died in a few minutes. Frank was not dead when we last heard from him, but was supposed to be past recovery. We have not heard the particulars of the melancholy affair but learn it was altogether without provocation, and entirely unsuspected by the parties slain. The Rectors were young men, raised in this county, and nephews of Elias Rector, Indian Superintendent. They were noble and generous young men; never known to have a difficulty with any person, and admired and respected by all who knew them. The news of their untimely death has thrown a melancholy gloom over all their acquaintances in this place, not soon to be forgotten. 2. In a message dated 8/13/2000 2:21:01 PM Central Daylight Time, MLBeason@aol.com writes: << I will be going to Sebastian and Benton counties in Ark. at the end of August. I was wondering if anyone could tell me the best places to find genealogy info. Mary >> Have a grand time! In Benton Co, visit Benton, AR. I think that's the county seat. There public library there has some microfilm, including older newspapers. In Sebastian Co, visit the Greenwood Library and the Old Jail House. The Jail House houses the local genealogical society. The library has no microfilm, but keeps copies of old newspapers on the second floor, and you can run up and down making copies : ) While at the library, go to the far left wall on the first floor, and flip through the index of the society's newsletters. The librarian is very sweet, and will help you locate it, if necessary. Check for your surnames. Most of the Key publications are there, so you can copy those pages for later use. If the publications are missing, head to the jail house, where they have all of them, and you can purchase the full pamphlet for that period of time you need. They also have other books available on Arkansas history and families. I spent 5 hours there alone. I think there are about 3 cemeteries in Greenwood. The one I know about is Mt Harmony, but I couldn't tell you how to get there : ) I was visiting at the time too. The people are great in both locations, and I'm sure you're hear from others about where to go. Have a terrific time! And happy hunting! Charlie Ward

    2. Montreal is northwest of Huntington. I believe that it is on Hwy 53. It is just a little north of Midland, AR, if you can find that. There are still houses and buildings there. Rose
