This was first posted to Scott County with very good results, however many of these men were apparently from Sebastian County. Any help will be appreciated. The following is a partial listing of men who joined the First Arkansas Union Infantry at Jenny Lind (or Fort Smith) on 1 Sept 1863, after the Battle of Devils Backbone. Both Union and CSA records agree that a large number of neutral men and Union sympathizers (some sources say under a death sentence) along with their guards broke and ran to the Federal lines during this engagement and many of them joined the Union Army that same day. I am testing the theory that most of those named below were among those men. I have identified many of these men as being from northern Scott County (including the area now in Logan) and others were from Sebastian County. A few may have been from Franklin or Yell County. Many of them are completely unknown to me. If anyone recognizes any of these soldiers and can provide any information about where they lived and or why they joined the Union Army, I would appreciate the information. There was also another wave of enrollments the following month (they are not named here), some of whom were members of (or neighbors to) some of the listed families. Many of them had first been in the CSA. Were they the guards? Thanks, John Dill johndill@ipa.net William Ake Edward Barbee Right Beakley Josiah Beasley Elisha Blankenship William Bradley Andrew J. Carolyn, I have all of the Byrum's listed in your message in my line, there a so many listed with the same first name that it would be hard to identify without birthdates. John M. Byrum is probably John Marion Byrum b, 5/21/1838 probably Sebastian Co. probably where Camp Chaffe is now. And the son of John (Jack) Byrum & Catherine Kinder. John has brothers named; James, George C, William W (Billy), that may be the Byrum's named. All born in Sebastian CO. Some of these were listed as deserters. A daughter of John's; Margaret Jane was married to a Gilbert Looman in 1853 in Greenwood, AR. These were all brothers of my GGGrandmother, Elizabeth Byrum. What the reasons for joining the Union were we will probably never know for sure. I did read an article once, That described the living conditions for families left behind, and how the Union had blocked the river and no supplies could be brought in and that the Union promised if they would join the Union, the Union would provide for them. I do not remember where I read the article; on a website. (I was brand new at Genealogy and didn't realize the importance of keeping things then) Have I learned alot!!!!!!!!!! I am sure there are people out there that are much more knowledge than me. I am the daughter of Francis L. Byrum and Annie Clark, both of which were born in Sebastian Co. I was also born in Sebastian Co. alice r.(Byrum) Thacker researching: Byurm,David,Booth & Clark

Hi list, Can anyone tell me if Hepsebah (Hepseby?) Cemetery is detailed in the book Sebastian County, Arkansas Cemeteries by Gloryann Young? The only description I have seen of the book says that it covers "Hartford Memorial Park, Jackson, West Harmony, New Providence, Pleasant Valley, and a number of other cemeteries". The cemetery is most likely very near the Franklin County border. I am looking for the parents of John Calvin FLOYD. John Calvin is buried in an unmarked grave at Tate Cemetery just across the border in Franklin County. John Calvin FLOYD's wife, Rebecca Sarah (Tate) FLOYD is supposedly buried at Hepsebah "with his parents". Sure would appreciate any help. Heather

I though this was interesting. It was posted on the Scott County line. Do you recognize any of these names? > The following is a partial listing of men who joined the First Arkansas > Union Infantry at Jenny Lind (or Fort Smith) on 1 Sept 1863, after the > Battle of Devils Backbone. Both Union and CSA records agree that a large > number of Union sympathizers (some sources say under a death sentence) along > with their guards broke and ran to the Union lines during this engagement > and many of them joined the Union Army that day. I am testing the theory > that many of those named below were among those men. > > I have identified about 20% of these men as being from northern Scott County > (including the area now in Logan) and others were apparently from extreme > eastern Sebastian County. Most of them are completely unknown to me. If > anyone recognizes any of these soldiers and can provide any information > about where they lived and or why they joined the Union Army, I would > appreciate the information. > > There was also another wave of enrollments the following month (they are not > named here), some of whom were members of (or neighbors to) some of the > listed families.
