Janice loved the Lord Jesus Christ with all her heart. She could not have left this present home, earth, during a more special time, Holy Week. She lived life with all the gusto one individual could generate. There was no challenge too great for her. She graduated from college with a degree in education the same year her daughter graduated from high school. She taught school, sold real estate, became a lay chaplain, attended LPN nursing school and graduated in 2000 as a massage therapist. Recently, she believed that God had called her to become a deaconess. She never settled for mediocrity in the stereotypical role of the retiree. She was a woman on the go. Jan loved to travel and experience all of life's new joys. She never shied away from new challenges but beckoned them. She is loved by many from all walks of life for her unique and caring personality. She is known for her generosity in giving of her time, love and energy by family and community alike. Her presence on this earth will surely be missed by many but none more than her loving, close-knit family. Her soft and loving nature was reflected in her compassion for animals too. Many times she would be found nursing a little bunny back to health. She is survived by her husband, C.J. Matheny of the home; one daughter, Carol, and her husband, Terry Toomey of Tulsa; her son, Martin, and his wife, Judy of Rudy; three grandsons, David Matheny and Brent and his wife, Tiffany of Rudy, and Stephen Toomey of Tulsa; and three granddaughters, Autumn and Samantha Toomey of Tulsa and Summer Skye Matheny of Rudy. The family will visit with friends at Ocker Funeral Home in Van Buren Tuesday, April 17, 2001, from 6 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be private, for family only, according to her wishes, at St. Luke's Lutheran Church. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to St. Edward Hospice; Sparks Regional Medical Center, attention Donna Hubbard; or the Care Team at St. Luke's Lutheran Church.
