The following is the article from Times Record: BURIED HISTORY TO COME ALIVE "Tales of the Crypt" slated for Monday at Oak Cemetery in Fort Smith, Ar. Buried history will become living history at the fourth annual "Tales of the Crypt", slated from 3 to 5:30 p.m. Monday at Oak Cemetery, situated between Greenwood Road and South 31st Street along Dodson Avenue in Fort Smith. During the one-hour guided tours, sponsored by the Oak Cemetery Commission and the Parks and Recreation Department, attendees will see and hear the stories of 10 of the people buried in the historic cemetery as portrayed by a cast of actors. Paula Sharum, who has portrayed characters at past events, has scripted, cast and directed the vignettes for this year's event. The life and times of a murdered Chinese laundryman, and a pioneer woman, the first female deputy U.S. Marshal who rode for Judge Isaac C. Parker and a German Immigrant and Confederate businessman are among the stories to be told. "This is an educational event for all age groups", and Church Riney, Parks and Recreation president who provided the historical research for the stories. "Each (tale) contributes to the educational and historical significance of Oak Cemetery". Those attending this free walking tour are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes to the event, which will be held rain or shine, Raney said. Parking is available at Ballman, Creekmore Park and at areas along South 31st Street; shuttles will be running between the parking areas and the event, which will start at domain gate on Greenwood Road and will exit at the Dodson Avenue. Thanks so much for your reply! Some descendants of ancestors born abt 1875 have listed Indian Territory on the birth record of a death certificate for their parents. Made me curious to know if the family went to OK for a time and returned to Greenwood. I read about a great flood that changed the course of the river. People used to be able to "ferry to Indian Territory until the flood changed the course of the river." I did not write down the year of the flood. Nor did I write down the previous course of the river. Thanks for letting me know about Center township. Recently I was in Sebastian County and Montgomery County. I spent some time in the library in Greenwood reading old history books. I read until the library closed and did not find answers to some questions I had. Is there a Greenwood whiz online? Does anyone know if Greenwood/Ft Smith would have been considered 'Indian Territory' in 1875? Another question regarding the change in the river. When did it change and how did it change? Also, - where is Center township in relationship to Greenwood? Thanks, Cynthia

Hello all, I am looking for death, obituary and burial information on William Henry MAYERS, born in MD around 1820, reportedly buried at Fort Smith and believed to have died between 1860 and 1870. He is on the 1860 census and his widow and children are on the 1870. Any info, leads and suggestions will be appreciated. Tom Blake

Hello...I have just received my great grandfather's CSA pension information from Oklahoma. As it turns out, according to the documents received, he applied for and received his first CSA pension while living in Ft. Smith. What is the easiest way to obtain a copy of this application? To whom do I write? Also many of my CANTWELL relatives are buried in Oak Cemetery in Ft. Smith.......Where is this cemetery located? Is it "old" in the historical sense? My great great grand mother may have been buried in a place called "China Grove Cemetry" ......has anyone heard of it and where might it be located? And finally, other source documents have the above great great grandmother buried at Furgeson Cemetry in Barber Scott Logan County, AR. Does this place ring a bell with anyone? Thanks for your time. Good Morning! Thought maybe all of us could use a little humor today. If your day has started out lousy...I can only wish you good hunting in genealogy today and offer the obits......BUT also thought you might like to hear how the obits are done every day. I am in the kitchen finishing cleaning strawberries, and the same sound starts coming from the computer room next to the kitchen. It starts every day after breakfast and continues until I go into the COMPUTER and sit down to do the obituaries. No, it is not the computer....but..... I have a toy (real small black & apricot) poodle, which bosses me around all over the house and tells ME when to do my chores. Today wasn't any different. She makes a sound like a small baby crying, trying to talk. If I go into the room immediately, she shuts up and lays on her TURTLE pillow, if not, it continues to get LOUDER and louder. So now she is laying sleep on her turtle very contented that I am doing things that she knows have to be done.
