I am descended from Richard Harrison Statham who homesteaded land East of "Old Hartford." The old Unity Cemetary (a.k.a. Statham Cemetary) is located on private property, which was the old Statham family farm. I have been unsuccessfully searching for old photographs of the Unity School and Church, which were nearby. If anyone has an old photo of these buildings, I would appreciate a copy. Also, any information you might have on the Hartford area STATHAM and McCONNELL families would also be appreciated. I am sending this to several lists, friends, and family. Some of you may encounter this in the future. THANK YOU!!! . . . to so many that replied to my plea for assistance. Although I got very little information on my POOL family, I did get lots of help with my question - "Chocoville?, AR (where is that?)". One person that replied was Bruce Tanner, Postmaster, Mansfield, AR 72944. Ed Sanders said "Chocoville was a post office in Sebastian County, Arkansas 1852 - 1887. The name was changed to Mansfield in 1887." "Now, you know the rest of the story." Lawrence D. Visitors to Fort Smiths historic Oak Cemetery got an earful Monday when 10 of the cemeterys normally silent residents rose from their graves to tell tales of days gone by. The Oak Cemetery Commission celebrated the Memorial Day by sponsoring its fourth annual Tales of the Crypt event, in which local thespians portray people who are buried in the cemetery and tell stories about their lives. They are trying to show the people the history of Fort Smith, as represented by the people who were the founders, the builders and the frontiersmen, the famous and the infamous. Different people are portrayed at each years event. There is no danger of running out of interesting stories anytime soon. We have 28 people that were hanged by Judge Parker buried here, and over 150 of the deputy marshals that rode for Parker. The founder of Fort Smith is also buried here. The cemetery has over 15,000 stories and we continue to research and present those stories to the public. Among the colorful characters who told their stories on Monday were: ** Lee Hue, a Chinese laundryman who was robbed and murdered. Lees funeral was the largest funeral ever held at the cemetery, with virtually the entire Chinese population of Fort Smith about 500 hundred people. They celebrated from morning till night, putting food and drink and alcohol on his grave so that he would have food for the journey and the mean spirits would eat and not harass him. It was part of their custom. But the interesting thing is, the next morning when the city woke up, every Chinese person in the city had departed .They were scared because of the murder. **Alice B. Eads, the first female deputy U. S. marshal to ride for Judge Parker. Bragged of her role in capturing outlaws, such as Bill Busby, Cherokee Bill, the Buck Gang and Jack Spaniard. **** Gus Bogle, who was hanged for murder in 1888 by Judge Parker. He made two escape attempts before he was hanged. He finally went to the gallows, the rope failed to break his neck and he strangled. ** Sweet Woman..for many years if was believed that a gravestone inscribed with the words Sweet Woman held the body of Maude Allen, who was shot and killed by the wife of Fort Smith Mayor Fagan Bourland for having an affair with Bourland. In the 1990s it was discovered that the gravestone held the body of Lorraine Tabor, the wife of a Fort Smith banker. Allen is not buried in Fort Smith. Johnnie, that is the reason $200,000 have been set aside to the genealogist who will try to contact the relatives of the deceased and for reburial of the remains. I believe at some point we will probably be able to determine the names and be posted on Crawford and Sebastian County lines. When I have fully recovered from the surgery I had week and half ago...I will do some digging for the line. Good Question. Continued: Parkes said the city has discussed relocating the cemeteries at Pense-Reed cemetery in Crawford County, but no definite plans have been made The graves with marked headstones are in the BECKY-WRIGHT Cemetery, a small area of land off Shephard Spring Road in the park. It is likely there are also unmarked graves in the cemetery In Crawford County by Susan Swinburn and Doris West, the abandoned cemetery here has only 12 graves. *****the commission responsible for this is going with great precaution when they are investigating this for genealogy purposes. For those of you who are not familiar with this area, Fort Smith is in the central west (further ,most) point of Arkansas, and Crawford County is just over the bridge connecting the Van Buren (city) and Fort Smith...about 20 miles is the Fort Smith State Park where this discovery has been made. A marked grave at the Becky-Wright Cemetery has a picture in the newspaper of one MARKED grave with, NANCY J. & J. B (or R.). SMITH...with date of birth and date of death (which is hidden by the foliage. If there are further information available...I will forward it to the Sebastian County Line. Thought maybe this might be of help, and lead your research to find relatives: The Southwest Times Record this a.m. reported: CEMETERIES HOLD UP PROJECT Two cemeteries at Lake Fort Smith State Park contain graves that must be relocated soon because of the pending water supply expansion project. The cemeteries, housed on land acquired by Fort Smith in the 1930's contain 30 to 40 graves dating back to the 1890's, according to Steve Parke, director of utilities for Fort Smith. The State statues require the city to make an effort to determine who is buried in the graves and attempt to contact descendants about the impending move. The cost set aside $200,000 includes the cost of genealogy work, court procedures, notification of descendants, the testing of the graves, excavation, purchase of the new grave sites and relocation. ***** I will finish the article when I return from church...this evening. If you show ancestors in CRAWFORD, OR SEBASTIAN COUNTY....this could affect some of you. I now have documented proof that John J. POOL (my great grandfather) married two ANTHONY cousins. In his Civil War "Full Pension Application File", was a Department of the Interior, Bureau of Pensions document dated 4 May 1898. It indicates that he married Celia A. ANTHONY who died at Clarksville, AR in 1864, and Amanda E. ANTHONY at Chocoville?, AR (where is that?) in 1866 by M. ?. Walts?, JP. It also indicates the record of marriage exists in County Court records. I would pay a pretty penny for that record. Any ideas as to how I can do that? The children living were: Sarah A. POOL, 1860 (Sarah Ann POOL, 10 Mar 1862 - 4 Sep 1936) O. G. POOL, 1874 (Oliver Green POOL, 12 Oct 1872 - 24 May 1936) Josiah POOL, 1880 (Josiah C. POOL, 1881) Eva G. POOL, 1888 (Eva G. POOL, Oct 1887) My cousin, Karen HAND < hand@crcwnet.com > wisely speculated that John J. POOL married the two ANTHONY cousins. She has a lot of information posted at www.genforum.genealogy.com/poole/messages/1771.html. I have a file of 1850 - 1900 census data on my POOL family in Polk, Sebastian, and Scott Co., AR; 1900 - 1910 in Atoka Co., OK; and 1920 in Red River Co., TX. I would be very happy to share it with anyone. John J. POOL is one of my brick walls. I do not know his father's given name nor his mother's maiden name. I believe his mother was Nancy C. POOL.
