    1. [ARSEARCY] Mixed up 1880 census

    3. I am finding that several pages in the 1880 Searcy Co Bear Creek twp are not in order. Families split by the census taker between pages are written in on the next page with no surname. The family numbers are carried over to the next page but the children just don't match. In one case "ED 173 pages 51,52 and 53" Mark and Sally Hensley's (family #473 page 52) children appear to be continued on the preceding (page 51 family #456) instead of the following page (53). Is this already a known glitch in this district? Any tips for matching up split families? Jaimie D. Wright (searching Guthrie, Felkins, Doshier, Mears etc.)

    3. I see what you're saying about the Marcus Hensley family, Jaime. I have both the 1870 and 1880 by Ruby Lacy. Apparently she didn't catch this particular mix-up either, although she does note that their daughter called Louisa in the 1880 is called Nancy M in the 1870. Here's what I find: Searcy Co 1870 - Bear Creek Township. #54-54 Marcus H Hensley 52 TN. Sarah C [Methvin] 42 TN. John M 19 AR. Andrew S 17 AR. Presley W 15 AR. Nancy M 11 AR. Newton M H 10 AR. Benjamin F 7 AR. Martha S Eva 4 AR. Emley S 2 AR. Searcy Co 1880 - Bear Creek Township. [This Shaw family is not found in Searcy Co in 1870]. #456-456 George Shaw 44 IL IL IL. Lovenia 34 AR TN TN. Elizabeth 14 AR IL AR. Mary 12 AR IL AR Lorra 11 AR IL AR. Clara 9 AR IL AR. William 6 AR IL AR. George 3 AR IL AR. John 4/12 Feb AR IL AR PAGE 460 24-25 June 1880. [This apparently from the census microfilm] #456-456 continued. Benjamin Shaw 16 AR TN TN. Eva 14 AR TN TN. Emley 12 AR TN TN. Perry 10 AR TN TN. Roscoe 8 AR TN TN. #473-473 Mark [Marcus H] Hensley 63 TN NC NC. Sally [Sarah C] [Melton] TN uk TN. Louisa 21 AR TN TN. Newton M H 19 AR TN TN. Elefair 3 AR MO AL. (NOTE: Dau listed as Louisa was listed as Nancy M in 1870) Obviously the children listed in the continuation of #456-456 are NOT Shaw children, but Melton children. Equally obviously, Elefair may not be the daughter of Mark and Sally, although she's listed as a daughter, 'cuz her parents apparently weren't born in the same states as Mark and Sally. This may also be of interest: Searcy Co 1860 census - Town of Burroughsville [Marshall]. #32-32 M Hensley 42 TN. Sarah C 30 TN. Alfred 17 AR. Lemuel 14 AR. Sarah 12 AR. John M 9 AR. Andrew S 8 AR. Pressley W 5 AR. Nancy M 2 AR. Whether this is a one-time mix-up or whether it's happened in other families in the 1880, I have no idea. I guess the only way to check that possibility would be to compare every entry in the 1870 against every entry in the 1880 <groan>. You've been real quiet for a while. Guess no one's come up with answers to some of the questions in the Doshier family, right? I still say wives + Princess just don't track. Oh well, we may never know <sigh>.
