Thanks for the URL, Tommie. Hunted all over and never did find it <sigh> Now it's carefully bookmarked :-))) For what it's worth, all of Ruby Lacy's marriage books and cemetery books and census are in the Historical Society's research room at the Marion Co Library in Yellville AR. And I'm pretty sure they're all at the Searcy Co. Library in Marshall AR too. She was a very thorough and careful transcriber and the information found in her books is about as accurate as you can get. She even did some annotating - adding bits and pieces of geneo interest here and there - which is a tremendous help. Sure do miss her interest and abilities. The cemetery books that done by Ruby Lacy are very inforamtional. Ruby also did the ones for Census records and a few others. If you do purchase one be sure when you are done to donate it to your local Genealogical society. having one here locally in Oregon was very helpful in my research of AR. Best of luck everyone. Can anyone help me find the parents of my great grandmother. Martha J. Hutchen born about 1860. She gives her birth state as AR in the 1900 AR census, but actually died in the fall of 1899. She was at that time married to William J. Williams my great grandfather. Martha J. Hutchen had been married before and gave the name of Martha J. Walden when she married William J. Williams in Searcy co., AR in 1881 and she had a child named Clara Walden born Jan 1880 when they married. Some say her folks were from Wayne Co., TN. Any help on this is greatly appreciated. Maybe she is in the AR census in 1860 if born 1859 or 1870 census. So if anyone runs across a marriage between Martha J. Hutchen and Walden about 1878 or 1879 in AR or TN please let me know. Janie
Hi list -- I guess I should post a note on the books. For the Arkansas book I received 56 request for information from the book. Each person is approximately 11 pages of information plus approximately 3 pictures. I am work one person per night. I had some computer problems but now have them fixed. On the Oklahoma book I received 100 requests for look-ups. I have gotten several done but without an index it is slow. I have also received some additional information from the Stillwater Musum. I will include all with the requests. I will answer each one even if I did not find the name. Thank you to one person for the reminder. I did not realize that it had been that long. I am hoping to get several done on Friday. I wanted to finish scanning the book before sending the information. I apologize for the delay. yvonne ____________________________ Colorado Springs, Colorado reply to henson@rmi.net web page: http://www.rmi.net/~henson Names I am researching: Main lines: BRENT(S), GRANT, EDMON(D)SON, HENSON, MCARTHUR Co-lateral lines: BRAZIL, CARLOCK, HARPER ____________________________________________________________________ Get your own FREE, personal Netscape WebMail account today at http://home.netscape.com/webmail
My grandfather Jesse Monroe Whaley was born in Searcy County (per family oral history, no documentation). The date was approx. fall 1877; he never knew his birth date for sure. His father (possibly Will or Tom Whaley) disappeared by the time Jesse was 2. Jesse and his mother Mary J. Renfro appear on the Van Buren County, Ark., census in 1880, and in October 1880 Mary married a Wm. Henry Gordon in Van Buren County. I have a copy of that marriage license. Mary was born in Arkansas and was part Indian (according to family lore she was Cherokee). (Van Buren adjoins Searcy Co.) Mary died about 1885, and Jesse was raised by his stepfather Henry Gordon. I've never been able to identify Jesse's father; Jesse possibly had a brother Tom or Will Whaley). Legend has it that the father and other son may have ended up in Texas. I've never found proof of a marriage between Mary Renfro and anyone named Whaley. I've checked at least 20 counties in Arkansas. Jesse lived in Arkansas most of his life, in these counties: Searcy, Van Buren, Woodruff, Faulkner, and Yell. He died in 1924 in Pontotoc County, Okla., at age 47. His wife was Mary Adeline Miller, and they had 7 children (Rosie, Mirlon, Frances, Oma, Clarence, Dollie, Maude). Can anyone give me any clues I might trace? I'd like to know about Mary's parents, and I'd like to identify the Whaley who fathered Jesse (possibly out of wedlock). Thanks, Bev Graham Springfield, MO

I am posting this for an Adams researcher who is new to the web and not really comfortable yet with being on a list. I will forward any info to him. His line is William Martin Adams who was the son of Jesse and Rhoda Martin Adams. Jesse was the son of Spencer Adams. Does not appear Jesse is related to Robert Adams who is also in Searcy County. Rhoda appears as a widow in the 1850 Searcy County census with her son Spencer as head of household. William Martin Adams married Sarah Smith. Does anyone have any information on this family that I can pass on to Bill. I know he would appreciate any and all help. Judy
I have some info on William Martin "Billy" and Sarah (Smith) Adams, Judy. One of their descendants (although I'm not sure he's aware of it) lives a couple miles from me. I got some of my information from his mom's papers as well as from Steve Bemrich and his "Family Tree Farm" site. Census and histories helped lots too. For openers: William Martin "Billy Adams (son of John & Rhoda [Martin] Adams) b Floyd Co. KY 10 Jan 1821 d St. Louis MO 20 Aug 1902 m Sarah Smith b TN 1836. They were in Tomahawk Township, Searcy Co. AR 1860, 1870 and in Hampton Township, Marion Co AR 1900. Their children were: Sarah E. Adams b Searcy Co AR 1862 m ca 1878 Thomas M. Younger (son of William Alexander & Lucinda Jane [Hinson] Younger) b MCAR 21 Nov 1853. Mary Jane Adams b Searcy Co. AR Oct 1863 d Water Creek Township, Marion Co. AR 18 March 1938 m John F/S. Baker (son of Jesse & Adelissa [Reeves] Baker) b Searcy Co. AR 23 Feb 1857 d Searcy Co. AR 20 March 1903. Louise Adams b MO 1865/7 m 1 Sep 1889 J. W. Herrington b ca 1866. Martha A. Adams b AR 1867/8 m 25 June 1892 H. L. Watts b ca 1852. John Quincy Adams b AR May 1870 m 17 Dec 1893 Minnie Swafford (daughter of Joseph Bozman & Manda [Faught] Swafford) b 1876/7 of Searcy Co. AR. Not knowing which line or how many of them your friend wants to trace, I'll leave this here and wait to hear. Do have more - mostly on the Marion Co. side, though. Sure would like to find out more about Sarah Smith. She's a brick wall for me. The Knoxville Gazette The Knoxville Gazette was the first newspaper published in what was to become Tennessee. The original owners G. Roulstone and R. Ferguson brought their press over the mountains from North Carolina to Rogersville in present day Hawkins County. They began publication on November 5, 1791. The paper was printed at Rogersville for about one year and then the press was moved to Knoxville which was fast becoming the political center of Tennessee. Saturday, January 28, 1792 Vol. 1 No. 7 (Page 3, Column 2/3) Knoxville, January 28 Copy of a letter from Colonel Arthur Campbell to Captain John Watts Captain John Watts, Ever since the conclusion of the late war between England and America, I have frequently been an advocate for peace, to take place between all the red people, and the citizens of the United States, and that they might live together as brothers.--I desire it because I could see no object worth wise men's notice to quarrel about. We live under the same sky, the same clouds water our fields, and the great spirit above gives us in common plentifull of many other good things whereby we may live happy, if we would but live in peace and love one another. Often has inconsiderate young men of the Cherokee nation interrupted these bright prospects, by killing innocent persons.--And to our shame, some white men have been bad also. Two years ago the people of America chose George Washington to be their Head-Man in peace as well as in war. He has a good heart; and loves all men, red people as well as white, and will take care of them, if they will observe his council and his orders.--The Creek nation last summer wisely made a lasting peace, so that war with them can happen no more. The Cherokees ought to make haste to do the same, least the door be shut against them forever. Why did some of the Cherokees last week kill two young men near the borders of Virginia? men that never hurt an Indian in their lives. This practice must be put an end to soon, or certain destruction will before many years befal the whole Cherokee nation. Let men die for their own crimes, when they commit such as are worthy of death, and then peace and good will more and more and more take place and be lasting. I send you this Talk as a Virginian, and because you are a brave man, capable to act wisely as well as be bold. Take a well-wisher's advice, listen attentively, and be strong in advising your young men to be at peace.--Come to the treaty next June at the mouth of French Broad.--The beloved man sent by Congress to take care of the southern Indians will then meet you, and take you by the hand as a brother, and forgive what is past; provided not a drop of blood is hereafter shed by the Cherokees Your friend, ARTHUR CAMPBELL Dated near Chota, February 11, 1791 Would you want this Kenneth Watts444@aol.com wrote: > Within the next month watch for free access to Arkansas family history > information.
