    2. Does anyone out there know anything about "green mountain asthma cure" My ggggrandmother used it for asthma. It comes in a can , it's like tobacco, you put some in the lid and light and breathe the smoke, and it seems to work (so I'm told, back in the late 1800's). Kinsey

    2. Mysty McPherson
    3. Sheri, there is no Richardson surname listed in the Searcy Co. AR 1850 census. And there is no Edward b KY 1810 nor William b MO 1835 found in the Searcy Co. AR 1860 census. I'd suggest you look for Edward Richardson b KY ca 1810 in Shannon Co MO in the 1850 census there. I say this because his son, William b MO 1835, would have been 15 then and would not yet have been married to Emily Tinker. You can access any county in the country by going to http://www.usgenweb.com. Click on the State Table, then click on the county selection list, then click on the county you want. Best of luck in your search. 1. Re: [ARSEARCY] Mixed up 1880 census
    2. Mysty McPherson
    3. I see what you're saying about the Marcus Hensley family, Jaime. I have both the 1870 and 1880 by Ruby Lacy. Apparently she didn't catch this particular mix-up either, although she does note that their daughter called Louisa in the 1880 is called Nancy M in the 1870. Here's what I find: Searcy Co 1870 - Bear Creek Township. #54-54 Marcus H Hensley 52 TN. Sarah C [Methvin] 42 TN. John M 19 AR. Andrew S 17 AR. Presley W 15 AR. Nancy M 11 AR. Newton M H 10 AR. Benjamin F 7 AR. Martha S Eva 4 AR. Emley S 2 AR. Searcy Co 1880 - Bear Creek Township. [This Shaw family is not found in Searcy Co in 1870]. #456-456 George Shaw 44 IL IL IL. Lovenia 34 AR TN TN. Elizabeth 14 AR IL AR. Mary 12 AR IL AR Lorra 11 AR IL AR. Clara 9 AR IL AR. William 6 AR IL AR. George 3 AR IL AR. John 4/12 Feb AR IL AR PAGE 460 24-25 June 1880. [This apparently from the census microfilm] #456-456 continued. Benjamin Shaw 16 AR TN TN. Eva 14 AR TN TN. Emley 12 AR TN TN. Perry 10 AR TN TN. Roscoe 8 AR TN TN. #473-473 Mark [Marcus H] Hensley 63 TN NC NC. Sally [Sarah C] [Melton] TN uk TN. Louisa 21 AR TN TN. Newton M H 19 AR TN TN. Elefair 3 AR MO AL. (NOTE: Dau listed as Louisa was listed as Nancy M in 1870) Obviously the children listed in the continuation of #456-456 are NOT Shaw children, but Melton children. Equally obviously, Elefair may not be the daughter of Mark and Sally, although she's listed as a daughter, 'cuz her parents apparently weren't born in the same states as Mark and Sally. This may also be of interest: Searcy Co 1860 census - Town of Burroughsville [Marshall]. #32-32 M Hensley 42 TN. Sarah C 30 TN. Alfred 17 AR. Lemuel 14 AR. Sarah 12 AR. John M 9 AR. Andrew S 8 AR. Pressley W 5 AR. Nancy M 2 AR. Whether this is a one-time mix-up or whether it's happened in other families in the 1880, I have no idea. I guess the only way to check that possibility would be to compare every entry in the 1870 against every entry in the 1880 <groan>. You've been real quiet for a while. Guess no one's come up with answers to some of the questions in the Doshier family, right? I still say wives + Princess just don't track. Oh well, we may never know <sigh>. 3. I am finding that several pages in the 1880 Searcy Co Bear Creek twp are not in order. Families split by the census taker between pages are written in on the next page with no surname. The family numbers are carried over to the next page but the children just don't match. In one case "ED 173 pages 51,52 and 53" Mark and Sally Hensley's (family #473 page 52) children appear to be continued on the preceding (page 51 family #456) instead of the following page (53). 3. Here's one for all of us to ponder.....a co-worker of mine told me about a program he watched last year on the Arkansas PBS channel...(that the Public Broadcasting station here in Ark.)...the program was about the hardships in the south and Arkansas after the depression times of the 1930's....the narrator talked about a traveler who had gone north from Little Rock to the county seat of Searcy County.. a town named MARSHALL and talked about the hardships people faced in MARSHALL....my co-worker said that when the narrator said "MARSHALL"...he paid closer attention to the program and then the narrator showed an old video clip of the town square and hundreds of people that were in town that day...he said the clip was fairly plain and peoples faced were clear....I thought it would be a great clip to view...anyone ever see this??? If not, how would we begin to contact PBS to see about getting copies??? Could see many old timers on the clip!!! Dewayne Treat

    3. A cousin and I are searching for information on the HENSLEY family. We have at least 3 ties to the family and are wondering if, and/or how these Henseleys are related. 1) Noble O. Hensley married Mary Jane Kelley, daughter of John H. Kelley and Nancy Jane Guthrie. They married in 1890 in Searcy County. 2) Newton M. Hensley married Margaret Jane (Treece) Guthrie, widow of Fountain LaRue Guthrie. They married in Searcy County sometime after Fount's death in 1876. 3) Eva Hensley was the second wife of James Fountain Guthrie, son of Carter A. Guthrie. (I have seen her name given as Eva Smith Hensley and Eva Hensley Smith - not sure which is corect.) Does anyone have any information as to the relationship between these Hensleys? We would be most appreciative of any help anyone can give and will gladly exchange information with anyone who needs our help. Thanks. Rita Floyd Reply to list or to ritajf_99@yahoo.com

    1. [ARSEARCY] James Jackson Barnes
    2. HERE IS MORE FROM THE LETTR: He also served for mny years on County and Probate Jude for Searcy County when Searcy Couty embraced the land now making Searcy and Marion Counties. In those days a County and Probate Judege had more authjority than he does nowl There were not stated times for court but it waas held when needed. He held many tersm of court in Owl's Cove, Wylie's Cove Bear Creed, places on Buffalo River, Monkey Run Crooked Creek, settlements on the White River and other places. In all his afaiars, whether it pertained to court actions, duties as a land commissioner farming church, policits or anything else where it was necaessry for him to form an opinion upon which he might have to act he deliverated much befor making up his mind. Once he had formed an opinion else where it was necessary for him to form an opini nthere wa no earthly power or influece tlht could induce him to change his mind. One great blessing, it was said, tht when he deliberated over a matter and formed am opinion he was usually right. He believed that his Bible taught that before the foundation of the world, that the Creater, God, that whatever comes topass, especialy, by an unchangable purpose the creater. His argumemts were very interesting of course, I can't remember them from hearing them, but he was often quoted when I was a young man. In reading what I have just said you may say that Uncle Jack was an "old fogy". If you did you would be very wrong. Even though he belieed the world to be flat and it floated on water like a board....Most other old people believed that , too. Eventho he was set in his ways, he had great respect for other people's opinion even if they ran counter to his own. Your great-grat-grandmother Barnes died about 75 years ago. I am not able to tell you about her. Your great-great-grandfather Barnes married a Mrs Begley. Mrs. Begley had several children by Mr. Begley. Uncle Jack had several by his first wife, including your greagrandfather James J. Barnes. n the last Marriag to Mrs. Begley, many children came inluding your great Aunt Tennessee Milbury Catherine Sutterfield whi is my wife. All in all I believe that has assembled 22 0r 23 children. "Uncle Jack" in the meantime had beome a very rich man for his time. Of course, his wealth would not be considered great today. You understand that I am not writing grom my memory, but rather from things my father and grandfather Sutterfield tole me so many years ago. They told of the famous festivals held by Uncle Jack Barnes. More later

    1. [ARSEARCY] James Jackson Barnes
    2. This letter was written by Hiram Sutterfield (Aug. l, 1937) to Charlie Barne's granddaughter, Mary Ellis White. Some of you might not want to read it, so please just delete it. This letter is not in it's entirity. I will try to tell you something about your ancestors, but I am sorry to say that I can't go very far back. What I am going to tell you could be told to you by people who will be living when you reach your maturity; but perhaps this letter can be treasure for you and you will enjoy reading it in your old age. You know, of course that your mother is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Barnes, who are your grandparents. Your grandfather Barnes is the son of James J. Barnes who died only a few years ago. When I was born he went for the doctor, therefore I know him from my early childhood days until his death. He was a man of wonderful character. No better ever lived than he. He of course was your great-grandfather. Your great-grandmother Barnes was also a womderful woman. Before her marriage her name was Mabrey (Josephine Mabrey). James C. Mabrey, Sam Mabrey and Frank Mabrey were her brothers. Their mother, who was your great-grandmother, was before her marriage, a Sutterfield. Your great-great-grandfather and grandmother Mabrey died when I was a boy. I remember them quiet well. They were outstanding citizens of their day. Now we go back to the Barnes's again. I want to especialy mention your great-grandfather James Jackson Barnes, who was known as "Uncle Jack". He had some of the most outstanding characteristics, and some to the most pronounced convictions regarding the Bible, politics, and manner of living, perhaps of any man who ever lived. He came to the Arkansas Territory when he was a young man. That was before Arkansas was admitted into the union as a state. He was for a long time U.S. Commissioner for a large territory embracing Searcy and other counties. In the territory for which he served as commissioner if one wanted to homestead a piece of land they had to go before him to make application, When the requirements had been take care of by the homesteader he again appeared before Co mmissioner Barnes and made their proof. All the papers would be sent to Washington by him, and in the course of time-maybe a year or two a patent for land in favor of the homesteader would be sent to Barnes for delivery. More later:
