    3. Is there a Thomas R. Jones that lived in Searcy Co.? I sent away for land records and half show a Thomas R. Jones and the other half of the papers say it's Thomas R. James. He's born about 1878. It fits my Thomas R. James but the paperwork states he had 2 children and Thomas James had 3. Jan James

    2. James Johnston
    3. When the US Gov't signed the "Dancing Rabbit Creek Treaty" with the Coctaws in the early 1830s (I think--could be 1820s late) in Mississippi (or maybe it was Alabama, I'm not going to look it up tonight) the USG gave warrants or certificates to individual members of the Choctaw who didn't want to go with the tribe to OK, which were redeemable with US G land anywhere. These land warrants were fungible, ie they could be sold and anyone could redeem them. So white people bought these certificates and used them to redeem Gov't land that they were buying in Searcy County and elsewhere. I would note that there were middlemen who bought the certificates from the Choctaw and sold them on. Maybe the Choctaw Certificates were sold several times before they were actually redeemed. With land selling at a dollar or a dollar and a quarter, if one could get a 160 acre certificate for $75, he could do well and save some money. 1. Henry Bowman Turney article
    2. heather e blair
    3. Thank you very much for the fine article on Henry Bowman Turney in the April 2005 issue of the Searcy County Ancestor Information Exchange. He was my 3g-grandmother's brother, and he second wife, Mary Jane Wasson, was the sister of my 2g-grandmother. I am cc:ing the list in case other people are interested. I hadn't had a good death date for Henry Bowman Turney, and your article on the cemetery cleared that up for me. Bill Turney's note that I have in my files says that he died from blood poisoning after being bitten by a pig he was carrying over his shoulder. You mention "Choctaw Certificates" in describing land purchases by the Turney family: what are these? PS -- my dad describes his granddad, Rufus Blair, baking sweet potatoes for him in the coals of a potbellied stove that Rufus used for heating his fruit stand on Mountain Street in Fayetteville, much like you describe in the sweet potato article. (Although he didn't tell me about curing them -- I will ask about that). Daddy baked sweet potatoes for us kids in a similar manner in the fireplace. They are the best! - Heather http://surgery.uchicago.edu/hblair/

    2. Thanks. I wondered if there would be something of that sort. W P would be William Pitchford Stone, ggpa that is. St Joe sounds right according to some family stories that have come down. There should be some Hancocks and may a Cruse or two. Any suggestions as to where might I get copies of those pages from the book? As to why the daughters married at Bellfonte, I can only guess it was that the bulk of the family was over there and /or maybe geography had something to do with it. -----Original Message----- From: James Johnston <[email protected]> Sent: May 7, 2005 6:48 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [ARSEARCY] 1890 or so There is the Bobbie Mays "1890 Searcy County, Arkansas Personal Property Tax Book" now out of print. 3. Is there any taxlist/local census or whatever that might fill in a gap? I know that my Stone line was in Blount Co AL for their 1866 local census. I know that I have found them in Searcy and Boone cos for 1870-80 cen. We all know that the 1890 census was burned or water destroyed in the fire. BLM tells me that ggpa William P Stone homesteaded in Searcy and took title to land in 1894. Mary Etta and James m. Martha. (Mary Etta and John in Bellfonte..Boone ..1881) Lore says that W P Stone and the elder Hancock were neighbors along the Buffalo while farming in Searcy. So back to the first question, what local source(s) might be useful to check for the period 1880-1 894 when the homestead records exists? ron
