    1. BARNETT/JOHNSON/STATON Revisited

    3. I've been doing a little digging and my confusion about this Scott Co family only grows. I located my John BARNARD in the 1850 Hardeman Co., TN census as John BARNETT, aged 38, but he says at that time that he was from NC, not SC as in later censuses. Also, he is married to a woman named Silinia and has a very large family, all of whom (except the very youngest) are listed as being born in NC. There is also an 8-year old Eliza JOHNSON in his household. On the same page there is, yet again, Mary JOHNSON, aged 44, but this time she also has a family, all of whom are from NC, but no husband. There is also a Bryant BARNETT, aged 24 and his family on this same page. I could not find any STATONS listed with this family at this time, so my only guess is that John BARNETT married Cada STATON at a later date, after she had my g-g-grandmother Larcenia M. STATON. But what happened to John's previous family and children, most of whom would have still been minors in 1860? To add to the confusion I am trying to integrate the information that Sharon STATON has listed in her various post sto this list and other forums regarding her STATONS and the possibility of their being from Georgia. The truth is I've never seen such a muddled extended family before. Now I have no clear idea of where these people came from--was it SC or NC or was it a border area or even in the old Cherokee Nation? And how are the BARNETTS and JOHNSONS related, as they surely seem to be? I'll keep digging. Just writing this down seems to help the mind's synthesizing abilities.
