    1. THOMAS HIGHFILL
    2. To all Highfill researchers, Today I was transcribing the Southern Claim for Jacob P. Tate of Scott County and ran across the following information that I thought would be of interest. The following is from the deposition of Martin Nelson to the loyalty (to the Union) of Jacob P. Tate, dated Dec. 23, 1874. "In answer to Question 60 witness answers and says "His, claimants, public reputation during the war was that of a Union and loyal man to the United States government. I know this by having Union men speak of it. I heard William Hunt, Thomas Hyfield, who was killed by the rebels for his loyalty to the Union, Judson Tate, Thomas Tate, his brother, speak of it. George Terry, James Terry, Jesse James and others could testify to his loyal reputation." If anyone out there would like a copy of the original document, let me know and I would be happy to send a copy to you. Sandy Conant emryscon@aol.com
