Dear Scott County friends, I am really late in responding to the request for surnames but hope the information will still be useful. I'm looking for POPE and MOORE surnames. I live in San Antonio, Texas and began my research just over two years ago. The hardest part for me is narrowing my search so that I can focus my attention. I get so excited and want to know everything about everyone of my family! I was adopted and thus never even knew my own parents. In the beginning (2 years ago), I was only armed with my father's name, OTIS B. MOORE, from my original birth certificate (circ. 1950). Today, I can proudly list his 15 brother's and sisters. I've met first cousins (who, by the way are GREAT people) and I've had the honor of placing a stone on my father's grave. Being able to hold and touch his birth certificate has at last made him real for me. Unfortunately, the older family members are gone so my cousins and are finding ourselves hunting old records and surfing the net looking for answers. Great services such as the ARSCOTT-L group make it possible. My father's mother, MARY ELLENDER POPE, was born in Boonville, Sugar Creek, Scott County, Arkansas to Henry H. and Sarah J. Pope on August 11, 1869. She was a twin to Robert F. Pope. She married Franklin Nimrod Moore (b: July 1862 in Paris, Logan Co, Ark) on Jan 20, 1884 at Chismville, Logan Co, Arkansas. Mary is buried in Terral, Oklahoma having moved there around 1908 shortly after Franklin's death. I have visited her grave, which is next to my father's. Unfortunately, I have not found my grandfather's. He is said to have died around 1903 somewhere near DeQueen, Seiver Co, Ark. I know nothing else about her family. I would love to learn of her twin's fate. Mary's parents were both born in Missouri (Henry in 1845 and Sarah in 1853). It appears that Mary's parents moved to Sugar Creek, Arkansas with along with Mary's grandparents: John & Mary Pope. I have a copy of the 1870 census for Sugar Creek which lists Henry and his family living next door to John and Mary (page 644). I don't have any other information on Henry, Sarah, John or Mary Pope, my great-grandparents and great-great-grandparents. The path ends in Scott County. Thanks for existing . . . and offering valuable insight to our past. Judy Moore Waring, waringj@swbell.net ------------------------------
