    3. I can't say the same. I've been very disappointed. They really didn't show me anything I didn't already know and my ethnicity isn't totally correct based on what I know. Appears to me they actually just used my tree and assumed my ancestors born in Russia were Russian when in fact they were full blood German. 3. My two cents about DNA testing - I descend from a Virginia line that has been pretty well documented. The progenitor was a man of means, and a member of the House of Burgesses - he left a fair amount of records. He had at least 5-6 sons, and some daughters, who all lived to adulthood - most of their lines comes down to the present day. Anyway, we have a family association - one of our officers is a certified genealogist - and we decided to do a DNA project. Well, it all hit the fan when it was proven ( we reran the test to make sure) that one of this man's "sons" could not possibly be his son. He was fathered by someone else. Now, this kid was named in the will and everything! Thankfully, it wasn't the son I am descended from - hahahahah. Anyway, a story was quickly concocted that he must have been a son of the wife from a "previous marriage" and just raised by this man as his son. Of course, no proof has ever surfaced of a "previous marriage." I think you can all guess where I'm going with this. To sum up: DNA tests are great, just be prepared for anything. And....lineage societies do not accept them as proof - yet. 3. Well for my 2 cents worth on DNA testing - in my family line which is the Watts family -thru DNA testing we have found 2 totally new and different family lines that matches ours 100%,plus we have found many cousins that we knew nothing about - some with different last names????I don't think any of our line would disagree with me - saying that DNA testing is worth every dimeyou pay to have it done. Just so you know - I am also researching the Clark line from Scott Co., AR, thus my reason for beingon here. Thanks - and don't ever question DNA testing - it is well worth the money.Barbara (Watts/Clark) Van Camp > From: [email protected] > To: [email protected] > Date: Fri, 18 Jan 2013 18:46:25 -0600 > Subject: Re: [ARSCOTT] List of Persons and Property Assessed for Taxation inScott County, Arkansas for 1865 and 1867 > > Wow Harold; sounds very interesting; could you elaborate a little more for > us part-timers? I have always wondered how you do it; costs, what good it would do, etc. How has it helped you in your research? Also, if a person already has pretty good records, would there be a further benefit to them to do the DNA part of it? (Sorry I'm full of questions; and perhaps several other people may be too!!) 3. I don't have information on your ancestor Jack, but you are indeed right; that cemetery is a sad sight. One of my GGGrandfather's first wife is buried there and we dug through briars and were lucky enough to find her headstone, cracked and leaning, but still standing. You may be right about many of the headstones missing. I will say we walked by it half a dozen times before we actually saw it; 3 of us looking and we ALL missed it several times. A second look may help you be more successful. Wish I could be of any help. Good luck though. 3. I think DNA testing can be really helpful to break brick walls. I spent 15 years trying to ascertain the name of my great grandmother. I had a very slim paper trail consisting of church minutes and a marriage record with initials. After 15 years of searching I had a "theory" that she was a daughter of Rebecca and William Henry Taylor. I found a Taylor descendant who graciously consented to a DNA test and my brick wall was broken! We were predicted 2nd cousins, although in actuality are 3rd cousins as our great grandparents were siblings, although I have to this day only found a couple of trees that include my great grandmother Adeline Taylor. This relationship was also proved through a separate dna test linking me to a half sibling of Adeline...a Gipson. So if you have a theory and a slim paper trail, dna may be just the thing to definitively confirm (or rule out) a relationship. 3. It's great that you are in the DNA program. I think as more and more people participate, it is really going to show connections we never would have found before. I did my uncle's. Have a perfect 57 (or is it 67) marker match with the uncle of a woman in Missouri. The times are right and the places they lived aren't that far apart. Also they both apparently came from TN around the same times. We haven't figured the connection out but know that its there and we'll keep working on it. I would strongly urge everyone, when and if they can afford it, to get tested. 3. Jack, have you (or anyone else on here) looked at the CSA pension records for Arkansas that are posted on the www.familysearch.org website? It takes a little time to find the record of a specific soldier or widow, but they're all on there. You can read them or, I suppose, print them out or download them. 2. I have a lost relative. Well, he is lost to me: I am sure he knows exactly where he is. Anyway, he is Abraham Pool. Born 1834 in SC and died as a CSA soldier in 1863 in Little Rock AR. Married to Martha Jane Tidmore. They supposedly lived in the Packsaddle, Barber area of Scott County. I can find nothing on him. I find an Abraham H. Pool in the Civil War records but I don't think it is him. He may not be Abraham at all. All of the old family are buried in the Packsaddle Cemetery but a highline wire was put over the center of the abandoned cemetery and looks like a bulldozer has cleared stones right down the center. My distant grandfather Charles Stewart is on one edge of the clearing and Abraham's son is on the other side of it. I fear old Abe is unmarked now in the middle.
