Kathy, which of the Samuel K. Duncans are you interested in? This is not my line but can probably find the names of his children for you. There was a Samuel K., Sr. and a Samuel K., Jr. Just need a general time period - the children of S.K. Sr. are listed in an affidavit filed in 1917 by S.K. Jr. (published in "Scott Co. Days Gone By" by Norman Goodner on p.34.) Delaine Edwards ------------------------------
Shirley: I don't know if I will get over the Logan Co. I figure I have at least cemeteries to walk in the Mansfield area. And one more to look for. I'm looking for tombstones that may have been over looked by transcribers or may have been too worn to read. That reminds me...got to go by the fabric store and pellon on my way out of town!! A friend says it makes great tombstone rubbings, and that a carpenter's crayon works well. Granvil and Rebecca Nevill are over around Webber Falls near Muskogee in Indian Territory in 1900. The Dallas library has good Indian records, but I have not found them on any lists. Rebecca had straight black hair. Kathy ------------------------------
Does any one know if there is a library in Mansfield, and if they have any genealogy material? I'd like to track down a print copy of The 1903 Plat Map Book of Sebastian Co. It contains lots of pictures of people and their homes c. 1903, but I have only had access to a photocopied version and a microfilmed version. I could not get a decent copy from either one. I'm headed mainly to the Mansfield/Waldron area. Suggestions from any one? Also, I am researching the Reese and Pettus lines in that area. Kathy ------------------------------
Shirley: I'm probably here until 5:00 central time. I'm jumping up and down. This has been the hardest line. Did you come across the Walker-Nevill marriage. This Minerva E. Pool on the 1850 census hints at a Pool relationship that is much earlier than the Pool-Nevill marriage that occurs later. Most of the Nevill children ,except for Dora, went to Red River County, TX in 1906. They drug their brother-in-law Richard Duncan with them. :) WHERE ARE JOHN AND HANNAH WALKER BURIED. WALDRON? OH, better yet. I have a genealogy cousin here who is descended from the McDonald Co. Walkers. She says if you can connect to Marc/Mark/Marcus Walker of McDonald Co., or John S. Walker to Newton Co., MO that she can help. That's her line. Marc Walker's name goes back to teh Marcum surname. I've forwarded you notes to me to her, and will send you her email address. This is so wonderful!! Kathy ------------------------------
Norman, I am resending this so it will go to the entire list as I believe everyone will be interested. I think this was what you meant to do and hope you won't mind my sending it on for you. Delaine Hello Delaine: I am Norman Thomas Blansett; I was born ,27 Feb 1935, Pocahontas,Randolph,Ar. I rode a train from Hoxie,Lawrence,Ar to Orange,Orange,Ca in 1939. I lived and worked in Orange County for 54 years and when I retired from The Orange County Marshal Department in 1993 I returned to Pocahontas,Ar. I am researching any Blansett, or variation of spelling, in Scott County, Ar. Norman Thomas Blansett Pocahontas, Ar 72455 ------------------------------
Shirley: I'm not leaving until late afternoon. Too many errands came up. I'll be checking the computer on and off this afternoon. My L. Rebecca Walker was born 8 Nov. 1844. That is the date on her tombstone. Does that eliminate her? If it does, could she be a niece of John Calvin Walker's? This SO close. Was John Calvin Walker in McDonald Co., MO in 1860 or 1850. I spend one long day at the National Archives branch in Ft. Worth looking among a jillion John Walkers for him with no luck. Living with Granvil and Rebecca (Walker) Nevill in Titus Co., TX in 1870 was a 16 year old girl named Nancy Ward. She also went to Scott Co., with them and married a Finch over is Sebastian Co. Does Nancy Ward ring a bell [yes, I have considered the Ward-Walker Indian conection but nothing has ever turned up. Oh, I have a picture of Rebecca Walker Nevill..... she was a lantern jawed lass!! Any big jaws among your Walkers? I had always heard it referred to as the "Duncan" look. The Duncan's had big jaws alright, but their children did not stand a chance after they married into the Walker-Nevill line!! I'm headed on up to Arkansas probably on Monday. Where is John Calvin Walker buried? And do you know where the cemetery is located? Kathy ------------------------------

Hello. I'm a new subscriber to the list. I am researching several families who lived on the border of Sebastian and Scott Counties. NEVILL, Granderson "Granvi" D. married abt. 1867 to L. Rebecca WALKER. She was b. in MO, and the death certificates of her children say she was b. in Neosho, MO, but I have not been able to connect her to any of the WAlKERS there. In 1870 the Nevills are living in Titus Co., TX where they have only been for a couple of months because they have a baby with them who was born in ARK. In the early part of 1871 they return to ARK and settle in Scott Co., ARK. I'm hoping that the Nevills were living in Scott Co. because Rebecca's family is near by. None of the Nevills seem to be there. Children of Granvil and Rebecca: Mary E. b. 1868, m. Sandy E. Winfrey; DORA b. 1870, m. Green A. Speights; SUSAN Gertrude b. 1871, m. Richard Duncan; Ida b. 1873 m. J.L. Henderson; Solomon b. 1875, m. Willie Stringer; Minnie L. b. 1877 m. Oliver Pool; William Granvil b. 1882 m. Lula Boze. Most of these children married in Sebastian Co. NEVILL, Granderson D. b. 1812 and father of the Granderson listed above. Was he a school teacher in Scott Co., ARK at the Blackfork school c. 1873? DUNCAN, Samuel K.P. was a judge in Scott Co. Would like to know more about his children if any one can connect to them. Thanks, Kathy Duncan ppskdd2@airmail.net ------------------------------
Shirley: YES!!!!!!!!! I've been trying to find information on your John Walker for a long time. My great-great grandmother was L. [Louisa?] Rebecca Walker who married abt. 1867 to Granderson "Granvil" D. Nevill [do not know where]. She went by Rebecca or Becky. A few month prior to the 1870 census being taken they had been somewhere in ARK because that's where their baby was born, but they are on the Titus Co., TX census. In the early part of 1871 they are in Scott County, ARK where Granvil Nevill applied for a land grant. There is a John Walker in the area with sons Pleasant and Sanders who is old enough to be my Rebecca's father. Is your John Calvin one of his sons? ALSO my Rebecca had among her children two daughters named Susan and Dora. I'm leaving today headed to the area Sebastain Co. that borders Scott Co. This is frustrating!! Can you help? Hi All, We have many new subscribers in the last couple of weeks and the traffic on this list has been so low that some of them are wondering if they are actually subscribed. ;-) How about if we all introduce ourselves and the Scott Co. families we're researching? Anyone with a specific problem the rest of us might be able to help you with? Any fantastic or exciting new breakthroughs you've had in your research? I am Delaine Edwards and I live in Scott County. This is my husband's home county and his ancestors here were: Kilburn, Newborn, Rice, Stinson. I'm a transplanted Californian and love it here. My ancestors, too, were Arkansans but came mostly from Franklin Co. and Van Buren Co. I have been interested in family history for the last 25 years or more. I started my research by asking questions (and more questions - older family members grew to hate seeing me come in the door) and then sending for all the available death certificates, of course then progressed on to census microfilm and from there to other county records on film. Military and pension records have been very helpful in my research. As you can see, I prefer filmed records to working in courthouses or libraries. I have had a microfilm reader for many years and it still gets a lot of heavy use. I am fairly new to researching on the internet so can't pass on any good tips for that; hope some of you can give us some good pointers on that. I can only say that I think the USGenWeb project is great and can only get better as time goes on and more actual records are transcribed and added to the archives. My grandmother onmy mothers side's maiden name was Bryan. Adele Louise Bryan but she was born in New York. I believe she lived in New York until she moved to Kansas City, Mo. and married my grandfather Barney LaRock. She died having her sixth child in 1929. She was quite young. No other names connect at all. Dixie ------------------------------
I am getting so many messages, that I don't have time to get my names out to see if I can make some connections in my families. I recently visited Scott County and stayed in Waldron for a few days. I have two lines that I am interested in who lived near Waldron, the Bolden family and the Wright family. I believe that both the Wrights and the Boldens, came to the Scott County area from Missouri (possibly Sturgeon, Boone Co.) and appeared to have moved together frequently. While I was there I had the opportunity to talk with a cousin who had many interesting stories to tell about the early days in the area. My cousin accompanied me out into the country in an effort to show me where my great-grandparents had lived. We stopped in an wooded area in the Ouachita National Forest east of Waldron. My ancestors had lived on a privately held piece of property still called the Caswell(or Casawell?) Place. My cousin said that at the time that my g-grandparents lived there (circa 1905), there were many saw mills in this part of Arkansas. My great-grandfather, Ira Ellis Bolden, worked on these saw mills. This one was located near a community called Stringer(no longer there). There was a post office at Stringer and one of my great aunts (Lula Bolden) had described walking from their house into Stringer to pick up the mail (a distance of about 2 miles). It is hard to imagine that this heavily wooded area was ever the site of even a small community, but perhaps this is one of the reasons that I have never been able to find this family on a census. I am including a list of the family in case there is anyone out there who has run across them in their own research: Ira Ellis Bolden (~1869-1905) +Alcinda Roberts (1870-1956) Their Children Levi Conner Bolden (1886-1940) +Mary Josephine Bohannon Lucy Ellen Bolden (1888-?) +Charles Wright Lora Mae Bolden (1893-?) +? Huie Lula Maud Bolden (1891-1981) +Hugh Alexander Bohannon Milton Monroe Bolden (1898-?) +Verna Johnston Sarah Elizabeth Bolden (1903-1990) +Bill Hopkins The Wright family included Charles and Walter Wright. Hi! I am searching for ELIZABETH HUNT..... She was married to RANSOM HUNT(6-11-1836). He was killed by bushwalkers while at home on leave from the Civil War. She is listed in the 1880 Scott Co. census as Elizabeth Willis head of the family and their children also are named WILLIS instead of HUNT as they were in 1860. My question is this her maiden name or did she remarry and that husband die too? Any help would be great!! This might help, their children were: Mary Frances Martha A. Isabel Nancy C. Gerge B. Hi, My ancestors are surnamed: RAINWATER(S), HISAW, HYSAW, HIGHSAW, TURNER. They moved into the Scott Co., area prior to 1882. Thomas L. Rainwaters married Sarah Elizabeth Hisaw and they had their first child William in 1882 in Scott County. The remainder of their children: Thomas Nathanial, Benjamin Franklin, Earl, Pearl (twins), Edward Jefferson, Dona, Della and others were born in Scott County as well. Sarah Elizabeth Hisaw Rainwaters parents were Joel C. Hisaw and Mahalia Turner Hisaw. They came to AR from AL and MS with a brief sidetrip to TX. We have had an exceptionally difficult time finding marriage records on Thomas and Sarah Elizabeth due to court house burnings. Any connections out there greatly appreciated!!!! I recently found out that my line goes back to Amos and Ziltha (Zelphra??) Kilburn in Scott County Arkansas. (Their daughter Hannah married James Wiley Wommack. James and Hannah's daughter Dialtha Tennessee married Rev. J.F. Sessions, J.F's and Dialtha's daughter Sarah married John Bell Hawkins, John Bell's and Sarah's daughter Bertha was my great-grandmother). Upon learning that the Kilburns are in my line I started doing some 'half-hearted' searches for them on the internet. To my surprise I was able to quickly connect with half a dozen researchers of this name and was able to connect my Kilburns with them and actually got back to 1412 in England!!!!! If anyone is searching this line I have a lot of information. Jacki ------------------------------

Hello again to all of you, Yesterday's discussion of our ancestors' migration into Scott County was very informative and helpful. I think a couple of you may have even found connections between your ancestors and those of others on this list? We received a great tip on Civil War research from John Dill. I think one of the most important things he implied is that we shouldn't focus only on our direct lines: search out all the information you can obtain on everyone connected with your family. He stated that the "best family information came from the records of...a brother-in-law." At times I've even checked out the neighbors (from the census) if they happened to be from the same state as my ancestors; in desperation I guess a genealogist will go to any extreme. ;-) I hope you'll all use this list to ask questions, seek help from the rest of us, share your exciting genealogy "finds," or just to visit with others who share a common interest in the history of this county and it's people. What books or other sources of information for Scott Co. are you aware of? Have any of you published books on your families? Do any of you have the "Goodner" books? They are: Days Gone By, by Norman Goodner, 1983 A Scott County Scrapbook, by Norman Goodner, 1982 Scott County in Retrospect, by Charles E. Goodner, 1976** A History of Scott County Arkansas, by Norman Goodner, 1941, reprinted 1983 **I believe this one may be out of print now. I believe the price is $5.00 each and the books are available from the office of Donald Goodner, 315 Washington St., Waldron, AR 72958 (501) 637-3286. These books are not indexed, so are a little difficult to use, but they're just jam-packed with good Scott Co. information, some of which may not be available anywhere else. Well worth the $5.00 price. (I have nothing to do with Mr. Goodner's office and am not involved in any way with these books.) Delaine Edwards ------------------------------
