I have traced some of my Bolden/Roberts ancestors from Scott Co., back to Barton and Boone Co, MO. Some of the family evidently settled around 1890 in Polk Co, AR and some in Scott Co. moving back and forth occasionally. Has anyone encountered any relatives making this move from Missouri around the same time? Hi: Who is Charlene? I noticed she traced to Maury County, Tenn. I believe that is where our family also came from. Dixie ------------------------------
Hello Scott County Researchers, We've all been awfully quiet on this mailing list lately. We are adding subscribers all the time; I just checked and there are now 45 of us on here. I hope those of you who have posted information about your families and/or research problems have found help. If not, just keep posting it again - someday perhaps someone will see it who can help. I know some of you have found family connections through using this list and that's great! I know one of our subscribers on here, Charlene, has now traced her Scott Co. Journey/Jurney family back to Maury Co., TN. She's learned a lot about this family in a very short time and I expect she's only begun. Perhaps she'll post what she's learned so far? Maybe one of Elijah's or James P's children married into the family of someone else on this list? For me this list is interesting and I always enjoy reading all of your posts to it and will try to help if I can. Delaine Edwards ------------------------------

William and Sarah (Hayes) Brashier --- he was born 1809, she 1816 --- had 9 known children born 1839-1856, none of them named William. Perhaps your William Brashier was a grandson or great-grandson; it would be interesting to find out. Sounds like a different Davis family. The Davises associated with the Hayes family came according to family legend from the vicinity of Dyersburg, TN. LV Hayes lvhayes@worldnet.att.net ------------------------------

Thanks to Jane Workman, wife of a cousin in Scott Co, I've been able to determine that my Hayes family was far better represented in the county than I had ever known before. As a result, I'm going to post the following query on the Scott Co GenWeb page: Looking for info on Archibald, Christiana, Cooper, Elias H., Henry, Hiram, Jane, Mary, and Sarah HAYES, all children of Peter and Kiziah Hayes of Bedford Co, TN, who came to AR between the 1830s and 1850s. All except Christiana settled in Scott Co. Christiana was married to William FRIZZELL, Jane to John SUMMERS, Mary to ? WARD, Henry JUSTICE, and Lafayette SUMMERS, and Sarah to William BRASHIER. Other area families not mentioned in the query, but known to have been associated by marriage to the Hayes family are ABEL, ARMSTRONG, CUMMINGS, DAVIS, DOOLEY, EVATT, GRAY, HALL, HARRIS, HOWARD, HUNSUCKER, MANKIN, RUSHTON, RYE, SARTIN, SCOTT, TRIPLETTE, VAUGHN, WORKMAN, YANCEY. Some of these families may have been located in adjacent counties. If anyone is researching any of the families mentioned above, I would appreciate hearing from you. Dear Scott County friends, I am really late in responding to the request for surnames but hope the information will still be useful. I'm looking for POPE and MOORE surnames. I live in San Antonio, Texas and began my research just over two years ago. The hardest part for me is narrowing my search so that I can focus my attention. I get so excited and want to know everything about everyone of my family! I was adopted and thus never even knew my own parents. In the beginning (2 years ago), I was only armed with my father's name, OTIS B. MOORE, from my original birth certificate (circ. 1950). Today, I can proudly list his 15 brother's and sisters. I've met first cousins (who, by the way are GREAT people) and I've had the honor of placing a stone on my father's grave. Being able to hold and touch his birth certificate has at last made him real for me. Unfortunately, the older family members are gone so my cousins and are finding ourselves hunting old records and surfing the net looking for answers. Great services such as the ARSCOTT-L group make it possible. My father's mother, MARY ELLENDER POPE, was born in Boonville, Sugar Creek, Scott County, Arkansas to Henry H. and Sarah J. Pope on August 11, 1869. She was a twin to Robert F. Pope. She married Franklin Nimrod Moore (b: July 1862 in Paris, Logan Co, Ark) on Jan 20, 1884 at Chismville, Logan Co, Arkansas. Mary is buried in Terral, Oklahoma having moved there around 1908 shortly after Franklin's death. I have visited her grave, which is next to my father's. Unfortunately, I have not found my grandfather's. He is said to have died around 1903 somewhere near DeQueen, Seiver Co, Ark. I know nothing else about her family. I would love to learn of her twin's fate. Mary's parents were both born in Missouri (Henry in 1845 and Sarah in 1853). It appears that Mary's parents moved to Sugar Creek, Arkansas with along with Mary's grandparents: John & Mary Pope. I have a copy of the 1870 census for Sugar Creek which lists Henry and his family living next door to John and Mary (page 644). I don't have any other information on Henry, Sarah, John or Mary Pope, my great-grandparents and great-great-grandparents. The path ends in Scott County. Thanks for existing . . . and offering valuable insight to our past. Judy Moore Waring, waringj@swbell.net ------------------------------

I was interested to read Bryan Fuxa's synopsis of the messages that he received in reference to his query about Bushwackers. I would like to know if anyone has information on Jayhawkers? I have a letter supposedly written by my great-grandmother. Her entire family was traveling from Arkansas to Matoon IL during the Civil War, being pursued by "Jayhawkers". Does anyone have any information on this group? Thanks, Jody Schau schau@megalink.net Visit my Web Page at http://www.megalink.net/~schau/ ------------------------------
Thanks for your help, Jacki! Although my files indicated we've e-mailed each other before, I didn't have the name of Janie Rose's father. God bless, Billy ------------------------------
Dear Jody, Here is what I have received so far about bushwackers and I am posting this message to the Scott County Mailing List: MESSAGE 1 Hi! I, too had ancestors who were killed by Bushwackers. If you would like to see the stories, let me know and I will send them to you. I found some interesting iformation at the following link on the Internet. http://www.cwc.lsu.edu/other/other/acwguer.htm or http://www.cwc.lsu.edu/civlink.htm and I emagine you can find info under other Civil War links. Basically, I believe, they were guerrillas during the Civil War, or outlaws acting as guerrillas, who raided homesteads, killing and pillaging the land for no good reason than for the pleasure of the killing (at least that seems to be the case in what happened to my ancestors. Two families that I know of on both sides. One in Newton County and the other in Scott County.) Let me know if you want to see those stories. Charlene Holland gwhstamp@presys.com MESSAGE 2 Bryan, I think this is the answer to your question. Quantrill's Raiders of Kansas during the Civil War were referred to as Quantrill's Bushwackers. It means to ambush or massacre as Quantrill did at the Lawrence, Kansas massacre. The source of this information is found in: A Frontier State at War: Kansas, 1861-1865, by Albert Castel. CORNELL UP, 1958. Your wife's relatives may have been killed in a similar raid. Hope this is what your looking for. Marvin Janeway mjaneway@vegas.infi.net MESSAGE 3 Bryan: I know a little about the Bushwackers, and hope someone can add to it The "Bushwacker War" began during the Civil War but continued into the Reconstruction. There was a Bushwacker War raging in Sebastian County and it must have been similar in Scott County. Phase #1: The Confederate majority pick on the Union women and children while the Union men are away with the Union army. The Union men did not remove their families from the area because they did not anticipate a long war. Phase #2: After the Battle of Pea Ridge and the fall of Ft. Smith and Little Rock to Union forces, the Union army drives the Confederate military from Western Arkansas and takes over. Angered by the way Union families have been treated they get back at Confederate families and property. The local Confederate soldiers in the "Army-of-the-West" do not leave with the army. They fall from ranks and remain behind to try to defend their families. They hide in the hills. The Union dominates and raids the countryside. Confederate families flee south to Southern Arkansas and Texas....and the Dierks area. The Confederates in the hills are starving and must resort to raiding and robbing themselves. Phase #3: The War is over. Confederate families and soldiers return. When the Union army is gone, they are in the majority again, and seek revenge on the now Union minority. This is the bloodiest phase. Raping, plundering, burning and killing are rampant. Fields are unattended. Horses, cattle and hogs disappear--they are driven off or shot. Houses are burned and families are living in lean-tos or brush arbor shacks. Pact of Silence: the Bushwacker War comes to an end when the Confederates tire of the senseless destruction. They stop their acts of revenge and both sides realize that to put the whole thing to rest, they must not enflame the issue by verbally rehashing it. In talking about the events of the Bushwacker War they became careful to avoid naming names, dates, and other gory details. Even within families they do not talk of these things. This information does not get passed down to their children. They may mention that someone was killed by Bushwackers but they do not pass on much additional information about it. Sorry this is so long. Can any one add to it. This information is from and old issue of "The Key" by the Sebastian Co. Hist. Soc.; vol. 7 issue 1, Spring 1972, page 4. kathy duncan <ppskdd2@airmail.net> ************* I am glad you were interested, Bryan Fuxa ********************************************* Bryan Fuxa Instructor of Mathematics Northwestern Oklahoma State University bdfuxa@ranger2.nwalva.edu ------------------------------

SURNAMES Hi! I guess Im kind of slow doing this, but here goes: I am researching my family background. My fathers family comes from Scott County. His name is CHARLES MATTHEW MORROW (b. 1912), and he married NANCY EDITH PHILLIPS (she is from Newton County). His parents were BENJAMIN ALLEN MORROW (1888-1974) and OLLIE C. HARRIS MORROW (1891-1961). His father was WILLIAM P. MORROW (1857-1929). They lived in Nola. I dont know what Williams fathers name was, but he was born in Indiana, as was William P. Need information on his family. His wife was MELVINA JONES (1860-1931), who, I think, had at least four siblings: MARTHA JONES (1852-1934) who md. ISAIAH BROTHERS (1852-1932). SUSAN JONES (1855-1916) who md. JUHU JACOB WILSON (1854-1930). JAMES W. JONES (1857-?) who md. NANCY E. MORROW (1864-1927). Melvinas father may have also been named JAMES W. JONES, and her mother named LOUISE. I am not sure and am looking for information on this family. Her mother married a WILLIAM VAUGHN after her husband was killed by bushwackers during the Civil War, probably 1864. OLLIE C. MORROWS parents were ROBERT (called BOB) M. HARRIS (1867-1915) and LAURAH BELLE JOURNEY (1874-1942). I do not know who Roberts parents were, but might have been a B.C. or CHRISTOPHER HARRIS from Tennessee. Bob Harris father came from Tennessee and his mother from Arkansas. His mothers name may have been LOU or LOUISANA (her last name may have been DWYER). I am looking for information on the Harris family. Laurahs father was, I believe, ELIJAH F. JOURNEY or JURNEY (it was spelled both ways in records.)and he was from Tennessee. Her mothers name was, I think, DOLLIE, but it might have been REBECCA or both. I think (hope, anyway) his father was NATHANIEL JURNEY or JOURNEY who was born in Virginia, whose wife was named MAHALA, and was born in Tennessee. My father gave me the name DWYER, as the mother of one of his grandparents, but he couldn't remember which one for sure, though he thought it might be his grandfather Harris. I am hoping that someone out there may know of these families and can give me some information. Thanks very much. Hope this isn't too long.
