I'd like to welcome Betty Leeper to the internet and to the Scott County Mailing List. Betty is the president of the Scott County Historical & Genealogical Society. She is very knowledgeable about Civil War soldiers and veterans of Scott Co. so if you have a Civil War ancestor from this county you might want to post the information here. I'm sure if she can help you with anything, she will. I won't post her personal Email address for the moment so she can have a chance to just monitor the messages on this list for a few days. Delaine

Hello Everyone, My "brick wall" is my ancestor Thomas J. Metcalf. My ancestors were Thomas J. METCALF born 1820 in TN and wife Elizabeth born 1822 in TN. They resided in Texas from 1848, possibly before, until 1869 when they migrated to Scott County, Arkansas. They had 12 children, all born in Texas: Francis Marion, William H. (Ham), Andrew Jackson, Mary, George Washington, Martha, Nancy, Thomas J., Joseph Anderson (my g grandfather), James Monroe, Samuel Houston and Henry Howard. The came to Scott Co., AR in 1869. I don't know where in TN they were born or who their parents were. Does anyone have any info on this line of METCALF's? The one record or bit of information I would like to find is where in TN Thomas J. Metcalf was born and who his parents were. Junior Metcalf Huntington, AR JrMetcalf@aol.com
Hi all! This is what I have on our JESSE JAMES. The WILLIAM JAMES part has not been proven yet. My line is from REV. Does anyone recognize this JAMES family and can they corroborate the connection to our REVEREND JESSE JAMES? Thanks much. In response to the following, I simply don't know enough about Sebastian County to take on a mailing list for that county and for the moment am not interested in adding it to this one. However, if any of you wish to send queries about your Sebastian Co. ancestors to this ARScott List, please feel free to do so. Perhaps some of you will be able to help one another. Hope so, anyway! (I think I have my Email problem squared away: I downloaded a newer version of Netscape and have been trying to use it's Email function and had somehow entered my address incorrectly.) Many thanks, Delaine for letting me post my Sebastian County "stuff" on this list. Seeking information on the WILSON and CARTWRIGHT families. They moved to Scott County from Wayne Co., TN. Have some info that I can share. I am also seeking information on ANY JOYCE/JOICE and HAARRISON families. They moved from Polk and McMinn Counties in TN in 1869-1871. They originally settled in the Oak Grove community. When the U.S. Government took that area for Ft. Chaffee they resettled in Greenwood and Witcherville. I have also been told that some may have moved to Mansfield. I am especially interested in the John Alexander JOYCE family. He married in either Polk or McMinn County and lived in both counties before The Civil War. He and his brother Joseph McDonald JOYCE moved to AR. Joseph moving first with some of the HARRISONs. I have lots of information on the HARRISONs that my husband received from a cousin. If any of this mess sounds familiar I would appreciate hearing from you. Linda J. Holley
Hi Delaine, Your mail keeps bouncing back to me. I just wanted to say thank you for the final update about the cemetery clean up. Linda
What is the possibility of adding Sebastian County to this mailing list? I need help desperately in that county, also - never get a response from anyone there. I am the moderator of the SE TN Mailing List and I have found it a great help to have more than one county involved. Linda J. Holley
Hi all! Does anyone have access to the 1900 Yell County, Arkansas Census records? I am looking for BENJMAIN C. HARRIS (may be listed as (B.C. HARRIS) in the 1900 Yell county census. He would have been with his wife, listed as either ANNA, LOUISIANA, or perhaps LOU HARRIS. B.C. was a Freewill Baptist Minister in Scott and probably Yell county too. He was born 1838 and she was born in 1845. I am trying to pin down his death date, and he is supposed to be in that 1900 Yell County census. He is not listed in the 1900 Scott County census, but lived near Gravelly, Arkansas at that time I believe. Thanks for any help you can give me. Charlene

I am researching the George Washington Jones family from Jones Creek area, Scott Co. AR. His wife's name was Mary Ann Smith Jones and they had the following identified children: Martha E.; William Granville; Nancy Delilah; James Landy; Joseph D.; and Thomas Richard. Nancy Delilah married William M. Hamby and they are buried in the Coop Prairie Cemetery at Mansfield. I would appreciate any help or information. I have a date of death for G. W. Jones but no location. It is thought that maybe it is the Vise Cemetery in the Brawley Township. George Washington Jones b: abt 1824 Marshall Co. Recently there was a "Stonewall" outcry on the Scott Co. list. I hit pay dirt. With the help of a kind gentleman--Hartzell L. Sherrill, a subscriber to the Scott Co list, I found the children of Curtis and Mittie Martin Riggs. The daughter had married one of Mr Sherrills uncles--both now gone and no children--back to the stone wall. But not to be outdone, Mr Sherrill ask around in the family and came up with the address of Curts' son Emery. Washington State no less . I called and we had a nice visit. Emery didn't hold the key to the "great mystery" of who was gggrandfather Riggs' first name, but he does have family that can be added to the growing list of decendents. Thanks to Hartzell Sherrill, in Texas, to Delane for all her hard work and the good people on the Scott co List. Marcene Oxford Coweta, Ok.

I wasn't talking about copying the book, I was referring to the Southern Claims files that you receive on your ancestor...They are very expensive. Think some of mine were $40 for one file! I think Uncle Sam would be agreeable to my photocoping my ancestors claim. It's public records. I am the lady who bought the book this morning from the publisher you gave me their name of...and you're right they were very nice. Faye in Tx.
Linda, I think you misunderstood what Faye and I were talking about copying: not anything from the book. We were advocating sending copies of the files themselves, once someone has obtained them from National Archives, either to the public library or the local genealogical society (or both.) The book is no doubt copyrighted; the information in those files are public records. Sorry, I should have been clearer in my first post. Here in Scott Co. the public library has only a small genealogy collection and they refer all letters of inquiry to the local historical/genealogical society to be answered anyway. I think material is more accessible through the mail at the Society than at the library here. Delaine
Hi All, I imagine the author would be really mad if someone copied the pages and put them in a library. The book can be ordered from Byron Sistler & Associates, their 800 # is: 578-9475. The book has 666 pages and was written in 1994 by Gary B. Mills - $45.00 plus postage. One person has already ordered the book because of the material I sent her so I don't feel that looking up a few names will hurt sales but copying is another thing. Linda Holley

I hope one of you (Faye?) will tell us about your experience with ordering these files. I've only seen one and it was huge, very worthwhile! They are expensive but perhaps some of you working on the same family might be interested in chipping in together to pay for one, then sharing copies of it. Delaine
Willing to do free look ups in a book indexing The Southern Claims Commission. Please send surname and state where the North damaged Southern property. Over 20,000 names. Linda J. Holley
