Does anybody know if Mansfield, AR had a city newspaper? Our great-great- grandmother, Mary A. Jones died 6 Feb 1913 and is buried in the Coop Prairie Cemetery in Mansfield. I was wondering if Mansfield had a newspaper in order to hopefully find an obit. Also, does anyone know anything about her dau and family, W. M. Hamby and N.D.(Nancy Delilah) Hamby? They also are buried in the Coop Prairie Cemetery. Thanks Lynne Bates

I am going to forward Jackie's request for information as I believe someone else on this list is also working on the Lewis Cagle family and may be able to help her more than I can. In the meantime, I will see what I can find on his wife. Delaine

I've just abstracted and posted the local news from a couple more newspapers to the Scott County webpage. These are from 1917 and 1919. I will add more as I have time to do them, but probably won't post any more notices here, so if you're interested in reading the old newspaper items I hope you'll check the webpage every couple of weeks to see if more have been added. If any of you are interested in seeing one from a certain time period, please let me know and if possible I'll add it. The earliest available is one issue from 1887 and then on up to the 1960s or so. Hello! Welcome to the list. My Civil War ancestor is my Great-Grandfather J.W. Combs. He lived in Scott County from 1880 until his death in 1911. He lived at Cauthron, and later at Bates. He served in the Confederate army as a member of "G" Company, 2nd Regiment of the Mississippi Infantry Volunteers. I recently received a copy of his Confederate pension records from the Arkansas History Commission, which I found quite interesting. Any other information you could share would be most appreciated. ---------- > I'd like to welcome Betty Leeper to the internet and to the Scott > County Mailing List. Does anyone on the list know if the Coop Prarie Cemetery at Mansfield has been transcribed? If so, how do I get that information? Coop Prarie Cemetery is just barely in the Scott county line. Thanks, Opal Payne
Try this one. http://www.insolwwb.net/~egerdes/ > > Edward G. Gerdes and Jeri Helms Fultz. > > They have been most helpful and the web page is great! > > Charlene
For Vonnie, who requested a repeat of the Civil War URL sent in by Nancy Parnell: www.geocities.com/SoHo/9787/cw.html Two people have volunteered to visit and copy cemeteries in Scott Co: Barbara Reynolds will be doing Union Hill Cemetery and Connie McEntire will be doing Buffalo Cemetery. I will be away from the computer for the next week, but when I'm back I'll send more information about this. Thanks to both of these volunteers and if any of you have information that will help them, I'm sure it will be appreciated. Also thanks to Betty Parker Eubanks who volunteered information on her Parkers who are buried at Union Hill. This is a start at seeing Scott County represented in the USGenWeb cemetery project! Could someone please list the URL for the Civil War Web page that came up a few days ago!!! I forgot to put it in my bookmarks and can't find it now. THANK YOU, Vonnie Looper Munnerlyn
This is a wonderful project! I hope if any of you visit Scott Co. this summer and have the opportunity, you'll visit and copy a cemetery and submit the information to USGenWeb. You'll find the instructions at the URL Nancy sent below. Delaine N. L. Hi all, I've just added some of the local news from a Scott Co. newspaper, The Wasp, for 22 April 1904 to the Scott Co. webpage at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~arscott/scott.htm If you're interested in reading this information, the link to it is the last link under "Scott County Research Links." I've not quite finished transcribing all the local news from this issue of the newspaper, but hope to do the rest of it tomorrow. As I get time I'll either add more issues or do another issue and change it; it may be too long a document to leave more than one at a time on the webpage. During this time period in Scott County, "The Wasp" was being published and I believe at the same time another newspaper "The Waldron Advance," was also being published. We have only scattered issues of these older newspapers on microfilm we've bought form the Arkansas History Commission. This particular microfilm is one of my own. "The Wasp" was a rather political newspaper and a lot of their news was about politics, local, state and national. Since I find politics, both then and now, quite boring, I will probably copy little of that type of information. <g> Hope you'll enjoy this and that some of you will find a familiar name or two. As I get time, I'll try to reformat it so it's a little easier to read. Delaine
Thank you Betty for reading all our inquiries. Do you know where I could find out the unit that my husband's great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather served in? George W. Jones served in the CSA as a veterinarian, then went AWOL or didn't go back from a furlough. He then had to serve with the Union Forces when they came through Scott Co. Apparently, he never took the oath for the United States as per the 1880 census, couldn't vote. His son, William Granville Jones served in the Confederate army as a scout. G.W. Jones had another son, James Landy Jones who possibly served also. Could you tell me how to find the units they served. Thank You. Lynne Bates
Charlene Holland just passed along this URL for a good Civil War site on the internet: http://www.insolwwb.net/~egerdes/ Edward G. Gerdes and Jeri Helms Fultz. They have been most helpful and the web page is great! Charlene
were you my neighbor when I was very young? At Hon? Close to Evening Shade? My mom was Edna Doyel and my grandmother was Mary Ann Poe Doyel. I know your last name so well, did you live very close there? Donna Cook Freeman
