    3. Greetings all. I have volunteered to make the journey to 2 of the graveyards where my ancestors are buried in Scott county to record all of the names there for the Genweb Tombstone Transcription Project. The two graveyards I am to go to are Egypt Cemetery and Hunt Cemetery both just outside of Waldron Arkansas. I am wondering if anyone knows of any possible records already existing on these Cemeteries or any idea of who to ask about it. I have visited these two places once before and noticed many graves only marked with numbers and many whos headstones are already so old that they are unreadable. I am prepared to go there soon and do my best but thought I should see if there was a historical society or someone that I should go to for information first. (I am fairly new to ARSCOTT-L) Thank you all, Rita Terrell (taerie@gte.net)

    3. Hi all! Does anyone know the origin of the name Mahala or Mahalia? It seemed to be a very popular name in the 1800's. Several of my ancestors had that first name. Thanks much. Charlene Holland

    2. Would you happen to know who Jones TWP was named after? I think it used to be LaFave TWP. How about Hunt TWP? Is it still called that or has it folded up? Thanks for being there. Swell Mel.

    3. Hi, I'm looking for anyone who can help me fill in the blanks on Daniel Carroll who was killed in Scott Co. in 1851. Also Daniel Boltinghouse. Daniel and wife Sarah were there in 1846 because that's when Sarah died. Their daughter Nancy married Daniel Carroll. Also connected are, Huie and Stuart. I have some letters written from Waldron in the 1850's but I need more info. Daniel Carroll also had a brother George. Thanks, Susan

    1. JAMES, LuVicia 1834-1887 Wayne Co., MO to Saline Co, AR to Scott Co., AR
    2. C. Holland
    3. Hi! Time to repost this, I think. I am looking for information about LUVICIA JAMES, daughter of CLAYBOURNE JAMES (son of JESSE JAMES). She is listed in the 1850 Saline County Census as VICY JAMES with her parents, CLAYBOURNE and JANE (JENNY) JAMES, along with her siblings. She married JAMES W. JONES of Scott County (then Sebastian County). I’ve been told that she may have been married prior to JAMES W. JONES, but have not been able to prove this one way or the other. She is listed in the 1860 Scott County Census with her husband and children. Her husband, James, was killed by bushwhackers during the Civil War. After the war she married WILLIAM R. VAUGHN and had six more children. My great grandmother, MELVINA JONES was her youngest daughter by JAMES W. JONES. Melvina married WILLIAM PRESTION MORROW in Scott County in the early 1800s. Below is the descendant chart for LuVicia James. Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much. Charlene Holland P.O. 2. C. Holland
    3. Hi! I am looking for information on WILLIAM PRESTON MORROW, born February, 1857 in INDIANA. I have no idea what county, though I have come across an 1860 census record which might be his family, but don’t really know at this time. I am just grasping for straws at this point. It is said that William was Irish, so it is possible that this could be the right family. He was in Scott County, AR between 1881 and 1883, I believe, when he married MELVINA JONES. Below is what is known about the first two generations of my Morrow family, and the census record. It is possible that William had at least one brother, name unknown, and a sister, NANCY A. MORROW who married JAMES W. JONES, JR., the brother of William’s wife. He may have also had another brother or cousin EDWARD MORROW who was in Scott County by 1910. Any help at all would be appreciated. I have hit the proverbial brick wall with this one. Thanks so much. 3. I have a Mary Jane Wilson b 1860 m John Shaw in Sebastian Co., AR 31 Oct 1880. These are my Grandparents. I don't know who Mary Jane's parents were. Your John B. Wilson had a daughter named Mary J. Could these be the same? John B. also had a daughter named Effie. My Mary Jane Wilson and John Shaw named one of their daughters Effie (my grandmother). John Shaw is listed on the 1910 census of Cauthron TS, Scott Co AR with a son Lemuel and daughters Effie and Sophia. Mary Jane was not listed on this census. I don't know if she had died by then. I don't have a record of her death or where she is buried. 3. Hello, all - Have you ever wanted to decode a person's Social Security number & determine where/when it was issued? Reprinted below is info that I found at: http://www.midtown.net/~moo/ssn.html Perhaps this might help someone. Happy hunting - Regards, Nancy Parnell np@staffnet.com (Desperately seeking info on Ota Sharp) ************************************************************************* Decoding the Social Security Number (from "Social-Security-Numbers And Other Telling Information:" by Simson Garfinkel, published in the Whole Earth Review, Fall 1989) The first three digits of a person's Social Security Number indicate the state that the person was living in at the time the number was assigned (see table). The exceptions to this rule are numbers in the 700-729 range, which were issued by the Railroad Retirement agency, the only such retirement plan to have its own block of SSNs. The fourth and fifth digits indicate the group number. The sequence is reported to be odd numbers from 01-09, then even numbers from 10-98, then even numbers 02-08, and finally odd numbers 11-99. All numbers issued before 1965 are either odd numbers between 01 and 09, or even numbers between 10 and 98. 1. Sending FTM Reports to others.
    2. Harvey Bottoms
    3. You can do this simply by showing the report on the screen. Select EDIT-Copy Report (Usually the name of the report). Then go to your email editor and/or word processing program and CTRL-V or EDIT PASTE. Magic. Your report is now easily shared with others without sending the actual file or hand typing all that information. Hope this helps as well. Harvey

    1. Family Tree Maker with Microsoft Office Tool
    2. Harvey Bottoms
    3. While this does not relate to surnames directly, I have been trying to get my information together so that I can link either people or dates or locations together. I have ran across this ability quite by accident but would like to share this with each of you in case you have these products or similar products. In Family Tree Maker, you have the ability to create a self defined report which can include any field(s) of your family tree program. Set this report to the fields that you would like to create a separate database that cannot be accomplished through FTM. Once you have your report, go the Edit menu option and select Copy Report. Go to a plain text editor and either Ctrl-V or Edit-Paste. This creates a tab delimited text file. Edit out the word Report and modify the headings to meet your needs. When you exit and save this file, bring up Access or Excel and import the file with the first line as headings. Bingo, you now have your information where you can slice and dice them to your hearts content. If later you need to update your information, just have it copy over the Excel file or import the information and overwrite the table that was originally created. You can use this to isolate either families or locations or dates or all three. You set the fields and the criteria to be used. Hope this helps someone. Harvey

    1. Index to obits
    2. Delaine Edwards
    3. The index to the Scott Co. obituaries for 1887 - 1963 is now posted on the Scott Co. USGenWeb page. Each year is indexed separately and you'll find the links for each year in the chart found on the "Obituary" webpage. These are all the available obituaries or mentions of a death as listed in the available Scott County newspapers and the amount of information in them varies widely. For some, there is the bare mention of the death occurring, or perhaps a death implied by a published "Card of Thanks." Others are wonderful capsule histories of the person's life (the way an obit should be but most often isn't.) If you find one of your ancestors listed, you might want to check with me via Email: if it's a very short one I'll be able to retype and send it to you by Email. For copies of the longer ones you'll need to write the Scott County Historical & Genealogical Society for a photocopy - I can tell you how many pages you'll need to send for. I hope this is information some of you will find useful. The indexes for the years 1964, 1965 and 1966 will be added in a few weeks, as soon as the Society publishes Volume 11 of the obituary books. 3. Hello All: I am hoping some of you may be working on this line and can help Debi. She had found a mention of her John B. Wilson in the Ione Baptist Church records in the Scott County Archives on the internet. Thanks for your help. Delaine

    3. The following message from Dr. Brian Leverich at Rootsweb Genealogical Data Cooperative indicates the Search Engine for the Mailing Lists Archives is now up and going. I tried it for this mailing list and it worked fine. Just type in ARScott for the name of the mailing list and then enter whatever name you are interested in. Delaine Edwards Courtesy of hacks by Karen Isaacson, you can search the archives of any mailing list (except those withdrawn by the listowner), now with nicer *formats* and *updated* to within the last 24 hours, at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl I'd also like to explicitly thank the folks who provided the resources that have made this new facility possible: o RootsWeb's Patrons, Donors, Sponsors, and Members. o Palladium Interactive, developers of the Ultimate Family Tree software for genealogists. 3. I just wanted to take this time to express my appreciation to the Scott County Historical and Genealogical Society. They are so helpful and the most cooperative genealogical society that I have run across. I have never personally met Delaine but she is so nice to correspond with. Jane Workman also works at the society and she has been so helpful. Jane and Tom are just wonderful people. My husband and I are proud to call them cousins. I just want to say that if anyone hasn't joined the Scott County genealogical society, that it is definately worth joining. Their "Echo" is wonderful! Lynne Bates Skiatook, OK

    3. Hi all! My husband and I are back from a wonderful visit in Oklahoma and Arkansas. We visited Scott County and had a wonderful time there. Got to visit several cemeteries and places I had gone as a child. We were very impressed by the kindness and courtesy that was extended to us by everyone we met there. A special thanks to Delaine Edwards goes to Delaine Edwards for her kindness!! You are great!! I was fortunate to get some great pictures from relatives I hadn't seen in a long long time. It was especially nice to see my cousin, Patsy Pickens of Gravelly who I hadn't seen in forty years!! Lots of pictures were taken at various cemeteries too. We had a great time!! Charlene
