I don't know if Alsey/Alsy etc. is a nickname for Alice but I have an ancestor who was listed interchangably sometimes as Alice and other times as Alsey in old court documents. Seems like I even found her once as Elsie but I'm not positive of that? Anyway, my Alsey/Alice were definitely the same person. Sue, I am sorry but could not find any reference to "Alcy or Elcy." We do know that many times names were spelled as the writer heard them.. not as they were actually spelled. Maybelle: I sure would appreciate a lookup in your book for "Alcy or Elcy." I thought I had seen all the various nicknames, but this one has me stumped. Is it short for "Alice" or "Elsie" or did someone just not know how to spell properly? Thanks! Sue
Here is a good place to find nicknames too. http://www.tngenweb.usit.com/franklin/frannick.htm Charlene

Lorenzo---Ran/Rant Henry----Hank John---Jack Acutally Jack in itself is a challege...usually for JACKSON, often just a nickname for ANY name! Same thing with PETE...we think Pete is for Peter..not necessarily so...Pete was often used like Buddy, for just a pet name. Robert--Bob/Rob/Robbie William----Willie/Bill/Will James--Jim/Jimmy Francis--Frank Frederick-Fred/Freddie/Rick Richard-Dick/Rick David-Dave/Daniel Theophilus---Theo/Phil Theadore-Theo/Ted/Teddy Andrew--Andy Jackson---Jack Joseph--Joe Jacob--Jake Most of these are pretty basic...men's names didn't seen to change as extrememly as ladies...
Lisa, according to my source the 'Allie' is a nickname for the following: Aileen; Alabama; Alberta; Alice/Alicia; Almena. Hope this helps. I have a book 'NICKNAMES Past and Present' that I could do some look ups for nicknames. It covers female and male names. Does anyone have a list of nicknames for males? The problem is just as bad for them as it is for females. Dale Thompson
Carole, I have a White, but she lived in Newton County. Martha Jane White married Mark Richard Callahan. However, one of their sons, Jefferson F Callahan came to Scott County and lived there many years. Georgia Aeverman
This is from Sharon Staton. For some reason it didn't appear with her earlier posting but is very useful information and if any of you have run across other nicknames I hope you'll post them here so they can be added to this list Sharon has made: One of the problems most researchers have is the inconsistency in given names appearing in records and documents, especially with females. It can be frustrating to say the least when Mary turns up on one document and Polly on another. I have put together a list of names that I have come across while doing my research. I hope this helps somewhat. Sharon Staton slstaton@arkansas.net Mary or Maryanne Polly Elizabeth . ..Betty, Betsey, Beth, Liz, Lizzie, etc. Margaret Maggie, Peggy Martha .Mattie, Patsey, Patty Laodicea ..Dicey Sarah Sal, Sallie Susan or Susannah ...Sukey, Sude Lavinia .Vinnie Lillian ...Lilly Delilah ..Dolly, Lila Fidelia ...Delia Rebecca Becky Katherine or Catherine Kate, Katey, Kitty, Cathy Cassandra .Cassie Permelia, Amelia . Melly, Milly Charlotte Lottie Eleanor ..Nellie Cornelia .Nellie Frances .Fannie Nancy and Ann are interchangeable
Good Morning All: Here is a little tidbit that I have found useful over the years. I keep it in my research book and taped to my desk. Sharon

Just thought it might be a good idea to put out my surname list again. BARNARD, CALLAHAN, CLARK, FRUEN, HENDRIX, MEEKS, RALLS, WHITE, and WHITLOCK. My families were mostly in Scott County. Some were in Sevier, Newton and Polk. And some were in LeFlore County OK and in Indian Territory. Georgia Aeverman

If Judy Goodwin at jugyg@oz-online.net is on this mailing list or if any of you know her maybe you could tell her that I've sent the 1880 census lookup for Francis Sliger three times and her Email is bouncing. Delaine
Barbara Hale Reynolds has contributed a partial listing of the Union Hill Cemetery to the Scott Co. USGenWeb archives. You can access it through the Scott Co. webpage at http://www.rootsweb.com/~arscott/scott.htm or through the Scott Co. Archives from the main Arkansas USGenWeb page. If you can add any information on your ancestors who are buried at Union Hill Cemetery, please let Barbara know at MimmiKAR@aol.com - or if you can add to any of the other cemeteries just let the contributor (or me) know. Thanks to those of you who have contributed information that will help other researchers! Delaine
While visiting in Arkansas over Christmas, I was led to a small cemetery by a friend in Ione. It didn't consist of much and most markers were gone but thought I would post what information I found. This small cemetery was located off of Highway 23 on Walker Mountain Road in Ione. The graves are among lots of brush and trees. There was a rocked area that surrounded about 5 graves. Inside the rocked area were two stones and 3 markers: W.B. Harwell, died Mar. 26, 1879, aged 46 yrs, 2 m's, 22 d's Next to W.B. Harwell appeared to be a grave of twin babies but can't be sure. Samuel and ____? Born 1875 died 1875. Also inside this rocked area were 3 other markers but no names (just small rock markers). Outside the rocked area was a single grave: Bert A. son of TW and RG(?) Harwell Nov. 25, 1887 Sept. 27, 1889 Hope someone out there can use this information. -Cindy McKean
