Donna, Hill (in ARk/Okla) is my lateral line and I sent several years ago for the "SOUTHERN CLAIMS FILE" of JOHN W. HILL of Sebastian County, Ark. It was the only file I ever got that had very little in it and I have misplaced it over the years...If I remember he was making a claim on some horses of his, that were killed. This may or may not be your JOHN HILL. HILL, John W. Sebastian Co, ARk. Comm. NO. 17968 Claim status B (B=Barred) These files are available from General Reference Branch National Archives Washington DC 20408 Specify "SOUTHERN CLAIM" these claims were made by citizens in the south who sustained damages to their place or property, etc.during the civil war and they could file a claim to the commission proving their losses. Most did get paid, you did however have to declare alligance to the US gov. Include all the data I gave if you send for the file (his only 1-2 pages, unless they didn't send me the complete file, which is possible) Faye in Tx. Hi all: I am trying to find out if anyone out there knows the parentage of Thomas G. Barnett. He was married to Narcissus Quinton in 1854 in Cherokee Co. Ga. and moved to Scott Co. Ar. There was an Adam Barnett with his family living in Cherokee Co. Ga. and several of the Barnett siblings also married into the Quinton family. Thomas was not listed in the 1850 census as a child of Adam Barnett so I can't link him into that family. I really think that he is the son but can't prove it. Can someone help me? Thanks Sharon
Does anyone have any information on the following families? They show up in Scott County, Arkansas sometime between 1850-1860. Here are the relevant census enumerations: (1) 1860 Washburn TWP, Scott Co. John BARNARD 49 m w SC Cada 32 f w SC L. M. STATON 11 f w TN Mary P. JOHNSON 55 f w SC (2) 1870 Washburn Twp, Scott Co., PO Chismville Joshua BEARD 52 m w TN Farming---/$200 Cada 42 f w SC Alsby BARNARD 9 m w AR John M. BARNARD 7 m w AR Mary JOHNSON 66 f w SC I believe the L. M. STATON listed on the 1860 census is actually my g-g-grandmother Larcenia Miranda BARNARD. Cada BARNARD is probably her mother and Mary P. JOHNSON her grandmother. Cada apparently was married in Tennessee to a man named STATON before marrying (?) John BARNARD. By 1870 it appears she has remarried yet again, this time to Joshua BEARD. I am particularly interested in finding out who the father of L. M. STATON was and who the family/parents of Martha P. Johnson was. My reason for believing that L. M. STATON is my g-g-grandmother's REAL maiden name, is that according to multiple, independent family sources, her name was Larcenia Miranda BARNARD, but until now this breakthrough I have had absolutely no luck tracking her family down. I know she married my g-g-grandfather Martin COUGHRAN, CSA, immediately after the Civil War and they lived in Scott County, Washburn TWP and then in Logan County--when this part of Logan Co was formed from Scott Co--from about 1866 to 1885 when they moved to the Cherokee Nation. From later censuses I find that she was born May 1848 somewhere in Tennessee. The fact that L. M. STATON is not on the 1870 census is also relevant; she was proabably married by then. Based on this purely circumstantial evidence, I am inclined to believe that this L. M. STATON must have been Larcenia Miranda BARNARD. It would seem that she took the BARNARD surname from her stepfather. Was she actually adopted? Also, to add to the confusing mix, according to family oral tradition, this branch of my family may have been all or part Cherokee. This may explain Cada going through three husbands between 1850-70 as it is well known that Cherokee women traditionally had great latitude in matters of divorce (it was a matrilineal society.) In a similar vein could John BARNARD actually be an uncle-- a brother of Mary JOHNSON, perhaps? Also, from the 1865 AR Tax List I learn that Cada also went by the name Caty. Does anyone know if her given name was Catherine? Thanks for any help at unraveling this puzzle.
Hi I am looking for information on the JOHN HILL family from Ft. Smith, Arkansas. They can be found in the 1850 Scott County census. I know his son ISAAC moved to Texas around 1858-59. Taking his younger sister and brother. I would like to find out more about John and his second wife NANCY, and their children RHODA,SAMUEL,HANAH,PATSY.The census records have PATSY down as DOTSY. ISSAC was my ggg-grandfather and I would like to find out more about his past , and who his parents were. From what I can gather, Rhoda,Samuel,Hanah, and Patsy stayed in Arkansas with their parents, and I would like to know more about their families also.......Thanks...Donna..NONNA1151@aol.com
Hi to all! John DAUGHTERLY/DOUGHTERLY married Permelia A. _____ about 1874. John and Permelia are listed on the 1900 and 1910 Scott Co. census. The following children are listed on the census with them: John R., Annie E., Thomas W., and Annie P. Here are my questions: What is Permelia's maiden name? When and where were they married? Where did the family move to by 1920? Is Mary DOUGHTERLY who married H.A. MARTIN in 1900 the daughter of John and Permelia? Carla
Hello Scott Co. List. I don't recall if I posted this previously, but here goes. Does anyone have any information about the Ione Baptist Ladies Aid group? I believe they were associated with the Ione Baptist Church. I recently discovered my 2nd Great Grandmother, Savannah (Wann) Godwin, as a member in the early 1900s and am trying to get more information. If any one can help, I would appreciate it. Thanks much, Cindy McKean
Does anyone know what happened to the children of Jennie ESSMAN Chandler.?? Jennie was married to Charlie Chandler of Brawley. The children were COY, DENVER (or Deaver) and IRENE. After Jennie's death in the 30's Charlie took the children to California. No word has ever surfaced (yet) about what happened to any of them. Hope someone of the ESSMAN family has heard this story and can help me. I would like to reach some of those descendants. Barb Hansen bhansen@wavecom.net

Thanks to Bob Foster rlfost@campusnet.org I've just added the Revolutionary War pension & bounty land warrant information for George Coughran to the Scott County webpage. So far as I know, he is the first Revolutionary War veteran to be found in Scott County. He is listed on the 1850 census here as George Cathern, age 91, from Virginia. His file will be found on the "Civil War" page at http://www.rootsweb.com/~arscott/scott.htm On another note, those of you researching the northern area of Scott County - Belva Township and Tomlinson Township, there is a wonderful new webpage with a lot of information about the communities of Lucas and Ione and the people who resided there. You need to visit the fantastic webpage of Artela Tyler at: http://members.aol.com/ArteLab/Index.htm If any of the rest of you have webpages that include information of interest to Scott County researchers, we'd love to have you post the URL here so we can all visit. Thanks. Delaine Edwards
I've just come across some new information regarding one of my Sevier/Scott/ Polk/Sebastian County ancestors, but I am having trouble figuring out just where he might have lived. Can anyone help? This is what I have, verbatim from "Genealogical Abstracts of Revolutionary War Pension Files, vol. 1, A-E" : "George Coughran or Caughran, VA line, applied 3 May 1838 Sevier City, AR Soldier lived in Bedford City, VA at enlistment. Soldier applied for BLW 7 Oct. 1853 Scott City, AR aged 91" Does anyone know what locality might be meant by either Sevier City or Scott City? Could this actually be a reference to counties? Or were there once communities with these names in SW AR? I've looked through atlases, road maps, and done some online queries, but come up with nothing. Thanks for any enlightenment.
Just a note about two genealogy sites going online. These may have been posted before, if so I apologize. The Mormons are putting all their records online soon. The new site (www.family-search.org) won't officially launch until mid April, but it is expected to go "live" for testing any day now. Another site is the Ellis Island Foundation (www.ellisisland.org) A CD-ROM will be released by the church on the 17 million immigrants, and will be posted online. That information however will not be available until next year. Their web site has gotten 67 million hits in 14 months. Good hunting to all. Stan Hullender

If you can help, please reply to PENNYPEACE@prodigy.net. Thanks. Dear Scott Co Arkansas Researchers: Could any one help with locating info on the following family? I've hit a brick wall. Nathan Green Forrest/Nathaniel Green Forrest/Green Forest/Forrest was in Scott Co in 1900 according to the census. He was in Johnson Co in 1880. He was born in Ozark Co Mo circa 1844-1850 and was married three times: Matilda Barnett VanMeter, Sarah Washburn and Manerva Miller. The combined children were: GD born 1871 (name may have been Green); WJ born 1873; SE (female) born 1875; Eliza A born 1878; Henry R born 1880; Samuel 1883; Sherman born 1891; Lula P born 1894. There may have been other children such as a "Lindy". It's rumored that two of his children Lindy and Green moved to Oklahoma. Nathan/Green was the son of James Forrest and Aurilla Freelove Dutcher Forrest of Ozark Co Mo. Any help/clues/leads/guesses would greatly appreciated. Penny Peace PENNYPEACE@prodigy.net

I am posting this to warn others about problems with ; Census Microfilm Expeditors 476 E. South Temple , Suite 4 Salt Lake City , UT 84111 website ; www.censusmicrofilm.com e-mail ; gme@nwinfo.net I was lured to order several microfilm copies from this company with "guarantees" of "speedy delivery" and "low price" . My order was placed in October of 1998 and as of this posting I have not received the order or a refund after numerous contacts with Steven Jensen at this firm . In his occasional replies he repeatedly gave false information to me as to the status of the order and cashed the check when mentioned stopping payment on it .I have copies of all documents and correspondences for those interested . Complaints have been filed with the Better Business Bureau and the United States Postal Inspectors , they have informed me that even they can't order this company to give a refund , but may seek criminal charges . I guess small claims court is next . If you are seeking genealogy resources......consider my experiences with this "Firm". Thank you , Kenneth Sartin
I just received the information on the Civil War Pensions for Joseph P. REED. The records were LOADED with LOTS of GOOD information. I even found there was one child from this family that I did not know about. >From these records I now know: Joseph Polk REED- (never knew what the P. stood for before now!) B: @1844,TN- (this wasn't listed anywhere in the records-just his age at marriage) D: 18 Feb 1899 M: 10 Dec 1865, Fayetteville,(Washington),AR Spouse: Mary Elizabeth POLLARD F: Unknown (may be Samuel REED) M: Unknown (may be Mary Ann BURNETT) Children: C. These individuals were: B. FORD, and Mark L. REED. (I believe that Mark L. was a brother to Joseph Polk REED), and I believe I found them on the 1850 for Washington Co., AR. * There was also a George William REED, who signed as Clerk at (Washington),AR on the marriage certificate for Joseph & Mary E.. on 10 Jan 1900. Hi Does anyone know of a place called Silver City. It would have been a place between Saline County to Scott County, AR. Supposedly my gr gr gr grandfather died on the trail, when the family was moving from Saline County to Scott County back in the 1850's. He was buried at a place called Silver City. There was a town by the name of Silver in the early 1900's east of Mt. Ida, but was not on an 1898 map I have. Anyone with any ideas? Thanks very much Charlene
Good Morning Researchers; I just returned from visiting my mother in Az.. For years I have tried to find info on my maternal grandmother. I have spend dollars trying to obtain a death certificate from Little Rock but always told none was available. Now I know why.. In visiting with my mother and getting her to go through her old pictures and other family heirlooms she had the death record book for Tomlinson Township beginning with 1905. I plan to copy this and send the original to Little Rock. However, in the interim if there is anyone who wants a look up (there are about 75 records in this book) I will be happy to check it out and reply with info I find. How did she obtain it... It seems that in about 1920 her father moved his family into the house formerly occupied by the physician in the area. The physician had left the book behind and his last entry is 1919. My mother added her mother's info that she knew when she passed away in 1927 and that is the last record in the book. My mom would have been 15 yrs. old at the time of her mother's death. If you need info I will be happy to respond as time permits. Sincerely, Wanda Pearce, Anchorage, Alaska.
Would Gaye Maness please contact me? You were asking me about the Banks family. I have tried several times to send information, but it keeps getting bounced back to me. Thanks, Carla
