Hi Jim, Don't know if this will help, but I wanted to share it with you just in case. There is a Levi Arnold on the 1850 Yell Co., AR census on page 472 and a Joseph Arnold on the 1850 Independence Co., AR census on page 377. I don't have the actually pages, but there is probably a lookup volunteer in those county who could help you out. If you would like me to check for them on the 1860 census, just give me a holler. Looking for the brother of Elijah who is on the 1850 census of Scott co. but cannot find Levi who supposedly moved to Scott co. with his wife Lucinda Null. They were married in Servier co. in 1842 but I can't find anything on that county or on Lucinda. And furthermore, Elijah is supposed to have another brother named Joseph Robert who married Mary Ellen Polk in Scott co. about 1845 but can't find anything on them either. Geez!!! This family. Hi all I just got back from a trip starting in Oregon to Salt Lake City, Utah, through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and back via California. I have to say that the nicest people we met on the whole trip were the people in Arkansas, especially Scott County (where we spent most of our time). Everyone always had a smile, a cheery greeting and were most helpful. Thank you all. Charlene
Hi all! Recently I was going through a photo album of my parents, and came across an old photo of a place I don't recognize. I think it might be in Scott County, perhaps Nola or Gravelly? The other county it might be would be Newton County, but I think it is probably in Scott County. You can view it at http://www.rootsweb.com/~arscott/mystery4.htm If anyone knows where this photo was taken, I would certainly appreciate hearing from you. Thanks much Charlene
My Great Grandfather William A. McCormack was wagon master from somewhere in Mississippi to Scott County or Nebraska Arkansas. I would like to fine out if any of the descendants (or anyone) of these families from that wagon train would know when they came to Arkansas. William had about 5 brothers and 2 sisters, unsure if they all came, at the same time. I found Land Grants on three of the brothers but none for William. The three brothers and date of Land Grants are: (l) Isaac Newton McCormack (called Zack). Land grant dated May 1st 1845; (2) Angus Leeorgus (called Lee). Land grant dated July 2, 1860; (3) Jeremiah T. McCormack (called Jerry). Land grant dated April 23, 1891 If anyone knows anything about any of these four men. I would be glad to exchange any of my information for your information. Good luck to you all in your own search. Many Thanks, BCencarik

The Scott County Genealogical Society is putting together a series of books covering the families residing in Scott County townships in 1900. I am researching the families listed in Johnson Twp. Currently, I am looking for information on Martin Alley and Sarah (Maynard) Alley residing in Johnson Twp., Scott Co., AR in 1900. Their children included: 1. Melissa Jonnie m. William T. Moss in 1903. 2. James Julius m. Rilla (various spellings) Blackwell in 1908. 3. Estella E. m. Samuel Lock in 1908. 4. Minnie A. m. Robert Atchley in 1910. 5. Anna Vergie b. 1892 and residing with her father in 1920. 6. John D. m. Vergie Nelson in 1919. If anyone could provide any information on these family members, please contact me. Thanks, Carla

Late last year there was some talk about Southern Claim files - claims filed by Southerners because of effects of the Civil War. Someone did a look-up for me from the index and I ordered a file. Unfortunately, it was not my ancestor but the file I ordered was very interesting. It told about the ravaging of a farm for the good of the Fed. troops. It listed the items taken, and the monetary value. There are also witnesses recorded as well as affidavits. Pardon my lack of memory, as well as disorganization in my record-keeping. Would anyone have access to the index of claims? I am sure I received the information from this list. The claim I ordered was not an Arkansas claim, or I would have posted. I do know that the National Archives holds this information but a claim number from the index is needed in obtaining. Does anyone have an index to Southern Claim files and willing to do a look-up? Thanks much- Cindy
Here are my surnames for AR and OK. My families moved back and forth between LeFlore Co OK and Scott Co AR. BARNARD, CALLAHAN, CLARK, DICKERSON, FRUEN, HENDRIX, MEEKS, RALLS, WHITE AND WHITLOCK. Georgia (Fruen) Aeverman
I am looking for information on Ferby Walker listed in the 1900 Scott Co., AR census as the 11 mo. old. nephew of Robert Lee Walker. Robert was the head of household. There is also a William Walker listed as a brother to Robert and a widower. I am assuming he is the father to Ferby. Robert appears in the 1910 census in Cedar Twp. and in the 1920 census in the Hickman Twp. Any information available about this family would be appreciated. I am trying to trace backward to Tennessee and North Carolina without much success. What information I have is from the census in Scott Co., and my grandmother's bible. The Walkers do not appear in the 1890 census. Robert Lee Walker, b. July, 1870 in TN, m. Mollie Jane Dollens 1896 William Walker, b. October, 1869, in TN Sallie Walker (unknown) Their father was John Walker, b. North Carolina, m. Julia Neal, daughter of Twitty/Sallie. John had a brother named George Walker. Their father was Robert Lee Walker (although I doubt the Lee, I think this was a mistake on my grandmother's part). Anyone with any information, please contact me. I would love to at least find out where in TN to start looking. Cathy
I've been doing a little digging and my confusion about this Scott Co family only grows. I located my John BARNARD in the 1850 Hardeman Co., TN census as John BARNETT, aged 38, but he says at that time that he was from NC, not SC as in later censuses. Also, he is married to a woman named Silinia and has a very large family, all of whom (except the very youngest) are listed as being born in NC. There is also an 8-year old Eliza JOHNSON in his household. On the same page there is, yet again, Mary JOHNSON, aged 44, but this time she also has a family, all of whom are from NC, but no husband. There is also a Bryant BARNETT, aged 24 and his family on this same page. I could not find any STATONS listed with this family at this time, so my only guess is that John BARNETT married Cada STATON at a later date, after she had my g-g-grandmother Larcenia M. STATON. But what happened to John's previous family and children, most of whom would have still been minors in 1860? To add to the confusion I am trying to integrate the information that Sharon STATON has listed in her various post sto this list and other forums regarding her STATONS and the possibility of their being from Georgia. The truth is I've never seen such a muddled extended family before. Now I have no clear idea of where these people came from--was it SC or NC or was it a border area or even in the old Cherokee Nation? And how are the BARNETTS and JOHNSONS related, as they surely seem to be? I'll keep digging. Just writing this down seems to help the mind's synthesizing abilities.
Hello everyone, I bought a new book the other day, "Factory Creek, The People, The Place, and The Times. A Social and Community History" by Shirley Ann Hollis. Lots of pictures and information in this book. Factory Creek is in Wayne County, Tennessee, but there are a lot of surnames which I have also seen in Scott County. My Hollis ancestors came from Wayne County Tennessee to Stoddard County Missouri to Scott County Arkansas. Not too much of a stretch that others from Wayne County came with them. Some of the surnames in the book: Adams, Andrews, Austin, Avery, Bedford, Bennett, Bivens, Blair, Blankenship, Blanton, Brady, Brewer, Brison/Bryson, Bromley, Bumpass, Butler, Calton, Cannon, Caperton, Casteel, Chapman, Clay, Clayton, Cole, Copeland, Creecy/Creasy, Crews, Daniel, Darnell, Davis, Dial, Dixon, Dugger, Duren, Foster, Fowler, Franklin, Gallaher, Gambrell, Gobbell/Gobble, Gray, Griggs, Hanback, Hardin, Hill, Hollis, Horton, Huckaba, Johnston, Jordan, Keeton, Kelley/Kelly, Kilburn, Kilpatrick, Kimbrell, Kimbro, Lay, Lee, Lindsey, Long, Luker, Lutts (pronounced Loots), Lynn, Matney, McCrory, McGee, McGlamery, McLaren, Melton, Moore, Morgan, Morris, Morrison, Murphy, Nelson, North, Odle, Old, Perry, Phillips, Prince, Ramsey, Ray, Ricketts, Rinks, Robertson, Russ, Smith, Springer, Stockard, Story, Stricklin, Stults/Stutts, Thornton, Todd, Trimmer, Tucker, Turman, Weaver, Welch, Wilbanks, Wisdom, Woodard, Worthen. Looking for someone with WFT Vol. 2: tree 1183 and WFT Vol. 17: tree 1003. These trees contain information on James Holbird. Thanks, Carla
Seeking information on the family of James J. Holbird. James and wife, Sarah, are first listed in the 1870 census of Scott County. They appear to have come from TX. They can also be found on the 1880, 1900, and 1910 census. Apparently, James and Sarah had eight children including Foster, Charles, Mary R., Ciley, Liller/Amanda, James P., Thomas J., and Loving B. Three of these children are buried in the Johnson Cemetery in the Nella Community. Mary married Luther E. Mills in 1889. Listed with the James Holbird family on the 1900 and 1910 census is granddaughter, Bessie Hankins. Does anyone know who she belongs to? Thanks, Carla
