I want to locate descendants of John J. Sanders who was on the 1870 census, Scott County, right along with Richard Sanders and K. Strickland. John J. (maybe Jefferson) was born about 1849 in Pickens County, Alabama. Where is he on the 1880 census? and 1900? Thanks in advance for any help and information. Hi Delaine, I see where YOU are doing the look-ups........thank you, my dear. Sorry I have so many names. I am really wanting to come again this fall. Who knows, the fares may get real cheap and I will be there. When I was there, Delaine, I just felt like I didn't have nearly enough time, so I did not go to the Library. Do they have a lot of information? I wish I would have taken time to research the old Waldron Reporter and papers before that. Do they have a good amount of them? Again, thanks Delain, I think you are a one-man band there. Thank God. Warm regards, Donna

I suspect Billie meant to send this to the mailing list instead of to me. Please reply to BCencarik@aol.com if you have any information. Thanks. I was visiting Parks Cemetery in Scott County, Arkansas and found a tombstone of an ancestor. His name had been handed down as John Culp, husband of Effie McCormack. A very sharp 94 year cousin said this was John Culp's grave. The name printed on the tombstone was JOHN CAULF; SPANISH AMERICAN WAR; PVT TRP G5 REGT CAV and his year of birth 1880 and year of death 1906. He and Effie were married in 1906, so they wouldn't have been married very long. They lived in Scott County. Does anyone know anything about this couple? Also, I would like to know if he died in the Spanish American War. Can anyone tell me how I would find out any information on him. Thanks for any information you can give me. Billie Cencarik

This may not appear to be genealogy related, but it is! When I was a little girl and spent my summers with my grandparents Oscar and Dollie Hale on Dutch Creek, my grandma used to make us sugar cookies. She gave me the recipe many years ago and I have often tried to make those cookies. They are so good! I was never able to make them successfully. The recipe was called "Mrs. Starr's Sugar Cookies." My grandma told me it was a recipe they used during the Great Depression. I am wondering if anyone connected to the Starr's remembers this recipe and might know who this Mrs. Starr was! Mrs. Star's Sugar Cookies 4 eggs (or 3) 2 cups sugar 1 cup shortening 3 teaspoons baking powder 2 teaspoons vanilla ½ cup sweet milk A pinch of salt Enough Flour to make soft dough (about 2 cups) Roll out on wax paper I also had an obituary that Charlene Holland sent me about my great great grandmother which mentions my grandma Dollie Hale and a Mrs. Leo Starr. I am wondering if this might be the Mrs. Starr of the sugar cookie recipe. The Advance Reporter 17 September 1925 Mrs P.E. Johnson, beloved wife of Tom H. Johnson of Dutch Creek was born November 29, 1853 and died at her home August 29, 1925. Deceased moved to Dutch Creek when in her fourth year and has resided there until her death. She was married to Tom H. Johnson at the age of 15. Early in life she became a member of the missionary Baptist Church and remained a devoted member all her life. She was a good neighbor, a kind friend, a true and devoted wife and mother. A husband and two children, Buddy Johnson and Mrs Molly Hale and a host of friends are left to mourn her departure. she was confined to her bed many weeks during her last sickness and the kindness of the many neighbors and friends was in constant evidence. Especially are thanks due to Mrs. Leo Starr, Mrs Dolly Hale and Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Hale. She will be greatly missed in the home and in the community where she spent her life. Anyone know? Still looking for information about the parents of my great grandfather, William Preston Morrow (descendnat outline below). His parents were supposedly both born in Indiana, although family stories say they may have been born in Ireland. W.P. may have had at least one brother, name unknown who had a son Ike Morrow who was born December 1886 in Arkansas and probably died in Oklahoma. He married Winnie M. Pitts July 10, 1910 in Scott County Arkansas. She was born March 1891 in Arkansas and probably also died in Oklahoma. Her parents were: Joseph W. "Billy" Pitts and Nancy M. Cain. The Scott Co Historical & Genealogical Society has recently published Deed Book 1, which is available from them for $15 + $2 mailing. The information in this book was recorded 1882 - 1884 & begins immediately after the courthouse fire of 1882. Many of the earlier deeds were re-recorded in this book. Information abstracted from these records includes the name of the Grantor (seller) and Grantee (buyer), Amount of money involved in the transaction, Land description, Number of acres, Date, Acknowledgement, and Date of filing/recording. Lookups are NOT available from this book, but if you are interested in purchasing it I will check to see if your names are listed in the index. Please limit your requests to no more than 5 names per request. Thanks. This book has a LOT of information and is the first of a planned series of Deed Book publications. Fruen is my most difficult line. There are not a lot of them and there is little data on them. My g grandfather, Joseph FRUEN was born in 1834 in England. I find him first in Monroe Co AR in 1861 when he marries Cordelia DICKERSON, a widow with three children. (JOSEPHINE, EVALINE, HENRY CALVIN) He is on the 1870 census of Monroe Co and the 1880 census of Yell Co AR. After that, I find nothing on him. An aunt tells me that he died of cancer. That is all I know. I haven't found a time or place of death, so I cannot request a death certificate. I don't know where in England he was born, so I cannot proceed there. I have gone through Yell Co records at the AR History Commission on court records, personal property records, etc. His son, WILLIAM EDWARD FRUEN was later found in Scott Co AR in 1910. His wife died in 1919 in Scott Co. Somewhere between Yell and Scott I should be able to find a cemetery record or an obit or a tax record or something. Does anyone have a suggestion of where to look next? Thanks Georgia Fruen Aeverman

I'm posting this for Patty (Jamerson) Archer whose Email address is parcher@umsl.edu . If you can help, please reply to Patty. Thanks. Delaine In response to Charlene's inquiry on the Price family of Scott County, I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the people with the Price surname in the 1860 Scott Co. Census? My Morgan PIERCE was listed as Morgan PRICE in the 1860 Scott Co. Ark. census. His last name was definitely PIERCE, but I wondered if any of the other people listed as PRICE were really supposed to be PIERCE? Morgan came from Lincoln County, Missouri (northwest of St. Louis County), as did many others from there and migrated to Scott County. He was my GG Grandfather. Also my GG Grandfather Clay Jameson (also spelled Jamerson, Jimmerson) migrated to Scott Co. from Lincoln Co. MO in the 1850s. In the 1870 census of Scott Co. there was a Patric Price; age 61; born VA; wife Sarah Price; age 58; born VA. Also living with them Delpha Corham age 13; born ARK; and John Meigrzen age 20; born LA. My Morgan was born about 1823 MO. Just wondered if there was any connection between these families? Also in 1860 Census were: P.F. Price (Patric above?) (726), Thomas Price (726), Thomas J. Price (800), William Price (806). Appreciate any info. Also am looking for parents of Mary Ann McGuire b. about 1820, MO? Thanks for your time. Also, have copies of Morgan Pierce's Confederate Civil War Papers from the National Archives. All it gives is the fact that he signed up Feb. 22,1862 for 1 year, in Waldron by Col. C.L. Dawson (Private, Dawson's 19th, Capt. Featherston's Company, age 34 years (that would put him being born in 1828, 1860 census puts him at 1822, 1850 census in Lincoln Co.MO puts him at being born about 1823, obituary in 1885 says he was about 65 yrs. old this puts him at being born in about 1820. Would dearly love to find out who his parents were. I believe Daniel Pierce and George Pierce of Lincoln Co.MO were probably uncles or cousins to him. Are there any confederate records on the State level that I should be checking into? Patty (Jamerson) Archer
Hi List: Some time ago a gentleman from Waldron offered to furnish me information on the WALKER family in Yell County. I have lost his e-mail address and can't remember if I found him through the Scott County or Yell County List. If this geneleman is monitoring this list, I would be pleased to hear from him. Hi I am looking for information about the following family. J.F. PRICE who was found in the 1900 census of Hunt Township. His wife was named Margaret, but do not know her maiden name. Below is an outline of who I think the family was. There was also a BIRDIE PRICE who married TOM JAMES, brother of LUCY JAMES. Birdie was supposed to be a daughter of a "Pobe" Price. Is she connected to this J.F. Price family? Is Pobe Price J.F. Price? Is it possible that J.F. Price was a B.F. Price? Any help on these people would certainly be appreciated. Descendants of J.F. "Jane McCormack married a man named Baker" is the only information I have on the daughter of Isaac Newton McCormack who lived in Pope County Arkansas. Jane was raised from the age of 8 by her uncle, William A McCormack of Scott Co. Ar. She was on the 1870 Scott Co Census in the household of W.A.McCormack. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hi I am looking for information about the following family. He may have lived in Logan County for a short period and also lived in Scott County. I am unable to trace him after 1910. His parents were Sarah E. and John McClain. See Dwelling #97/97 for details. He married Canzada Vaughn January 19, 1890 in Scott County, Arkansas (Scott County Marriage Book A, page A-537) This marriage record spells his name McLain, rather than McClain. "William McLain, 19, Waldron to Cunzada Vaughn, 18, Waldron on19 Jan 1890 by T.N. Bottoms, JP." She was the daughter of William R. Vaughn and LouVicia James Jones Vaughn. Hi I am looking for information about the following family. They lived in Logan County for a short period and also in Scott County. I cannot find this family after 1900. Any help would be appreciated. Sarah McClain Family 1900 James Twp Census Sarah McClain Hd Feb 1847 53 Widow 6/4 MO TN TN Eliza Thresher D Jun 1878 21 M/5 AR MO MO Ardista E. GD Oct 1896 3 AR AR MO Sarah E. McClain is first found in the 1870 Scott County census of Hickman Township #30/30 with her husband, John McClain and three children. Living close by were the Hunt, Starrs, Roland and Yandell families. There was also a Jackson McClain family, who possibly could be related to John McClain. John McClain was born about 1847 in Texas and possibly died between 1870 and 1880. Sarah MClain was born February 1847 in Missouri. According to the above and the 1880 census, her father was born in Virginia and her mother was born in Tennessee. Sarahs maiden name is un-known. She married John McClain at an unknown date and place before 1866. In 1880, Sarah is found in the Scott County Census of Hickman Twp, District 171 at #372/376. She is 36 years old and is listed as divorced. She is listed under the name McClain, but has a child named Eliza Jenkins, age 3. I am assuming that she may have been widowed from McClain and divorced from Jenkins, as she has taken back the name McClain. She apparently married Mr. Jenkins between 1870 - 1878, and they were presumably divorced by the 1880 census. Evidently Mrs. McClain moved to Logan County where she married (3) B.F. Bailey March 11, 1891 in Logan County, Arkansas (Logan County Marriage Records, Book D, page 39). He was 50, she was 45, and both were from Southern Home, Logan County. She is found again in 1895 when her daughter, Eliza Jenkins marries E.L. Thresher. On March 21, 1881, thirteen sections of land were detached from Scott County to become part of Logan County. Those sections were from Hunt Township - Sections 1 through 6 of Township 4 North, Range 26 West and Tate Township - Sections 1 through 6 of Township 4 North, Range 27 West, and Section 1 of Township 4 North, range 28 West. I do not think that the area of Hickman Township where Mrs. McClain was living in 1880 was part of the area that was given to Logan County. I believe that she moved up to Logan County. From what I can determine, Sugar Grove, where they were living in 1895, is just a little ways above the Scott and Logan County line. And at some point before 1900, Sarah McClain and part of her family moved back down to James Township in Scott County, where they are found in the above census record. The children of Sarah E. and John McClain, as far as I can tell, were: 1) Mary Elizabeth McClain was born about 1866 in Arkansas and is first found in the 1870 Scott County census, of Hickman Twp #30/30 at age 4. She is next found at age 15 with her mother in 1880. She married William H. Os-born August 3, 1882 in Scott County Arkansas. Peter LaPlace officiated at the ceremony (Scott County Marriage Book A, page 13). William was 22 and Mary Elizabeth was 16. He was the son of Nelson and Jane L. Osborn. Wil-liam H. Osborn was born about 1859 in Missouri. Mary Elizabeth (McClain) Osborn died before 1910 and we find her husband listed in the 1910 census as a widower in Lamb Twp #50/51. I dont find William after 1910. Mary and William Osborn had eight children: 2) Rosetta or Rose Ada McClain was born about 1868 in Arkansas. She is first found in the 1870 Scott County census of Hickman Twp #30/30 at age 2. She married Oliver R. Pollard July 12, 1882 in Scott County Arkansas; ceremony performed by T.D. Self-M.G (Scott County Marriage Book A, page 7). He was 23 and she was 14. She was listed as Rose Ada McLain. Oliver R. Pollard was born about 1859. They were in Logan County in the 1890s. He was a wit-ness to the marriage of Eliza Jenkins and E.L. Thresher in Logan County in 1895. See below. 3) William J. McClain, born February 1870 in Arkansas. By her marriage to Mr. Jenkins, Sarah had at least one child, Eliza Jenkins, the Eliza Thresher listed in the above census record. Eliza was born was born June 1878 in Arkansas, probably Scott County. She was first found in the 1880 Scott County Census, Hickman Twp #372/376 at age 3 with her divorced mother, two stepsisters and one stepbrother. She married Elijah L. Thresher April 4, 1895 in Logan County, Arkansas (Logan County Marriage Records, Book E, page 283). He was 24 and she was 17, both of Sugar Grove. Ceremony was by W.A. Smith. THRESHER, E.L. age 24, Sugar Grove to JENKINS, Eliza age 17, Sugar Grove, 4 April, 1895, by W. A. Smith, JP, W.S. Williams, Security (note from her mother, Mrs. S.L. Bailey, witness - O.F. Pollard, her son-in-law) Book E pg 283. O.F. Pollard, witness to the above marriage, is most likely the Oliver R. Pollard that married Rosetta McClain. I also believe that the E.L. Thresher in the above marriage record is the same Elijah Thresher, enumerated with the Elihu Bayrd family at Dwelling #95/95 of this series. The last I find of Eliza (Jenkins) Thresher is in the 1900 Scott County Census, James Twp #97/97 above. As far as I know the only child of Eliza and E.L. Thresher was Ardista Thresher, born October 1896 in the above census record. Ap-parently Eliza and Elijah Thresher were divorced. He is listed living with the Elihue Bayred family at Dwelling # 95 of this series. See that chapter for information about him. According to the above census record, Sarah McClain has had six children with only four still living in 1900. I have no details on either child who died. And I have been unable to trace this family any further. Charlene Holland
