    3. Thanks, Brenda. This is all very interesting. Maybe the J. M. Russell is Manley. I am delighted to have this deed and your aunt's history of the church. I have been to Benton once years ago, but didn't know about the church and thus missed all this information. I do remember my mother telling me that the Russells had always been Methodists and she converted when she married my father. A great heritage! Hi Sue, I don't have anything in my files (over 10K individuals) on RUSSELL except a few that don't connect. They are shown at the very bottom of this note. As for the Deed to the "new" Mt. Carmel church.....I have a photo of the original, given to me by a now deceased cousin who lived in Benton, AR. Also, saw the original when I visited there with my sister in 2000. It reads as follows and has not been altered in any way: Deed Book X, pg. 181, Saline Co., AR: "WARRANT DEED, with Relinquishment of dower, KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENT: That we C. R. The above document refers to Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church, which still stands directly across the road from my grandparents farm on Rte. 5. My now deceased Aunt Thelma Harrison-Tolson, compiled the original printed history of the church and sent it to me back in the late 1960's. It has been altered over time, but since she, my own mother and 3 uncles "lived it", and I heard the story myself from my grandparents, I tend to believe their version more than the newer ones. A brief history of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church, 1891 - 1991: The oldest record that can be found of this church is in 1891. O. H. Keadle was paster of the church at that time and the building was also used as the local school house. On March 8, 1908 a Valentines Day storm literally blew away the old church. The members, some of whom were the Harrisons, Julia Forsythe Ulmer, Martha Russel Steed, the Rapers and Pricketts, gathered together to decide how to go about building another church, as there were no services for a year. (My grandparents )offered to sell the church the property where it is presently located. It was originally made of rough lumber, had two front doors with three rows of benches. In 1936 the Sunday School rooms were added on the back, and concrete piers were made by using nail kegs. These rooms, being built during 'hard times' were made by, and from materials found in the homes, of members. In the early '40's ceiling tile, new windows and sheet rock were installed and the bell tower removed, with a vestibule added. When another church disbanded, Mt. Carmel received their kneeling rail and black benches and are there today. In 1959 the present pews were added and a pulpit, communion table and piano. As was this parish's tradition, everyone donated to the cause. In 1972 restrooms were added towards the front of the little church, and a fellowship hall was added in 1973. About October of 1975, Mt. Carmel members purchased the adjoining land. Remodeling of the interior was completed in 1979, and new improvements came alone in 1981 as well. The very first Sunday School Superintendent was my great grandfather, James Riley 'Jim' Harrison (1891), followed by many others including my grandfather 'Doc', and some distant cousins. On a table of Honor, in the entrance of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church, lies a memory book which reads: "To the Glory of God and in Loving Memory of Eugene F. Prickett, A Memorial Perpetuated In Repository, Presented by The Carl Prickett Family, Dr. and Mrs. R. R. Wooley and Others. In Remembrance of Mr. and Mrs. C. R. Harrison." Naturally, there are others listed, as well, but it does my heart good to see my grandparents names in memorial. I hope this is of some help in your search? 3. Hi again, Just in case I didn't mention it...the church was originally Mt. Carmel Methodist Church......then was changed to Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church. I've attached a picture of the church in 1910, one year after it was built. And, yes, I'd say your guess that J.M. stands for Manley is probably right on. Good luck with your search, and if I can be of more help, just yell!! Brenda PS: You may be interested to know that a large % of Bentonites are buried in the old Rosemont Cemetery in Benton. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Suzanne Russell" <auntsue@twlakes.net> To: <arsaline@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, April 14, 2008 4:40 PM Subject: Re: [ARSALINE] Russell ancestry in Saline Co. > Thanks, Brenda.
