Margrett: I don't know anything about your MANN-DEER family, but I thought the DEER name was one I'd seen somewhere. Since I don't think it's a very common name, I'll pass on to you what information I've seen about it (which isn't much). I have the indexes to the 1870 and 1880 Grant County, Arkansas, censuses, and there are several DEER families listed in each (but none with daughter Susan in 1870). Also, I noted in the Saline County Marriage Index that Berry MANN's bondsman at the time of MANN's marriage to Susan DEER, was George WITHAM; and that J. L. MANN, age 24, married Elizabeth WITHAM, 17, 28 March 1880, Book E., p. 32. So this indicates to me there was some connection between the MANNs and the WITHAMs. There's a George W. WITHAM, age 16, in the household of David BUNCH in Saline County in 1870, according to the transcription of that census; and there is a note stating that David BUNCH's wife Elizabeth A. was a WITHAM--so even though George is listed as a farm laborer, it might be that he was Elizabeth's brother. [Dwelling 44, Wills Township, which was created out of Saline Township and became part of Saline Township again after this census] There are also BUNCHs and WITHAMs living close to one another in Saline Township, Dwellings 202 and 204. Marriage Book C, p. 138 has a marriage between Daivd BUNCH, 24, and Betsy Ann WITHAM, 22, on April 18, 1867; and Marriage Book E, p. 162 has the marriage of a Bettie BUNCH, 16, to a J. W. WITHAM, 25, 29 August 1881. (There's also a marriage between a WITHUM and a BUNCH in Saline County in 1855.) Note also that the marriage date for Berry MANN and Susan DEER in the index I have is dated 17 December 1878 instead of the date you gave. I'm sorry I don't know anything concrete but perhaps these clues might lead to something.
