Henderson Family Samuel Henderson was born 6 Feb 1746 in N.C. and died 1816 in Tenn.. He married Elizabeth Calloway 7 August 1776. She was born in VA in 1760 and died 14 Oct 1815 in Tenn. Family tradition says four brothers came from Ireland to America at an early period. They probably had more children, but I have only traced one son, Rev. Samuel M. Henderson, Jr.. 1. Rev. Samuel M. Henderson, Jr. was born ca 1784, Rockingham, N.C. and d. 1842, Perry Co., Ark. He md. 1809 Sarah J. Bush, a widow who was b. 25 Feb 1785 in Tennessee, and d. 16 Sept. 1859 in Saline Co, Ark. (See 1850 census of Saline Co, Ark.) Samuel came to Saline Co. about 1834. He was a Missionary Baptist Preacher in Saline Co. , and built the first church of this denomination at Spring Creek, Benton, Ark. He also built the first Missionary Baptist Church in Perry Co, Ark. He had at least ten children. 1. Minerva J, married M.M. Lyon 2. Samuel T. , b. 1814 Maury Co, Tenn md. Malinda Bland, daughter of Jesse Bland. Jesse Bland was an early settler of Arkansas having come from Ky about 1823 or 1833. Jesse was b. ca 1778 in Nelson Co., Ky and d. 14 Feb 1843 in Saline Co, Ar. He was a Baptist Minister who was known as "old Hardsides" because of his preaching ability. (Goodspeeds Hist. of Ark., pg 318). Malinda Bland was b. Saline Co, Ark 1815 and md. first to Joseph Rutherford, per the Ark. Gazette 1820-1838. Malinda d. 28 May 1874. Samuel T. came to Ark about 1834 and married three years later on 9 July 1837. Samuel T. Henderson was a Pvt. in Capt. Robert Brazil's Co. B., 1st Regt. Mounted Gunmen of Arkansas Volunteers. This company rendezvoued at Little Rock, Ark. on August 12, 1836. Samuel was listed: "of Conway Co., Ark." He was in the same company as Jethro P. Henderson, his brother. (See Arkansas Pensioners 1818-1900 by Dorothy Payne). He was in Garland Co, Ark by 1863, then moved to Texas until after the Civil War. Children were: 1. Perciful H., b. 1838, Ark., Pvt. Co. C, 3rd Ark Cavalry. Apptd. Sgt Aug. 1863. Captured at Rome, Ga on Oct. 13, 1864 and sent to Camp Douglas Prison. Became ill and was discharged 17 June 1865. 2. Samuel M., b. 1842, Ark., md. Malinda ---, b. 1842 in Miss. (See Yell Co, Ark census) Was owner of Benton Jug Factory. Went to Texas 1863 and came back to Benton after the war, during which they lost everything. Served in the Seminole Indian Wars. 3. Jesse B., b. 1845, Ark. 4. James C. b. 1847, Ark. 5. John C., b. 1852, Ark. 6. Sara E., b. 1852, Ark. 7. Ann Eliza, b. 1854, Ark. 8. Marsarin J., b. 1857, Ark. 3. Abner, No information. 4. Eliza, married Sam Williams. No further information. 5. Jethro P., b. 1815 in Tenn, md. Lydia Bland, daughter of Daniel Bland on 15 June 1837 in Saline Co, Ark. Daniel Bland was early settler of Arkansas Territory, signing a Petition to Congress as early as Nov. 12, 1818. He is possibly a brother to Jesse Bland of Saline Co. Jethro P. Henderson was a Pvt. in Capt. Robert Brazil's Co. B, 1st Regt. Mtd. Gunmen of Arkansas Volunteers. This company rendezvoued at Little Rock, Ark. on Aug. 12, 1836. Lucy, b. 1879, Ark. 4. May P. , b. 1848, Ark. (possibly a twin to Jethro P.) 5. Louisa, b. 1851 Ark. 6. Alford/Alfred C., b. 1827 Tenn, md. Verlinda W. Bland, daughter of Jesse Bland of Ky, 17 June 1838. Verlinda was b. ca 1824 in Ark. Alford's will in Saline Co, Ark dated 21 Feb 1855, shows Calvin Bland and Williamson D. Wary as executors and witnessed by William M. Hutchingson. Children were: 1. Eliza J., b. 1844, Ark. 2. Mary F. b. 1847, Ark. 3. Nancy E., b. 1849, Ark. 4. Queen V., no information 7. Robert H., b. 1821 in Alabama, md. Elizabeth ---., b. 1827 Ark. Their children: 1. Martha A. 2. Melissa J. 3. Samuel J. 8. Martha Ellen, b. 1823, md. William Martin Hutchingson 13 Apr 1842. He was born 8 June 1814, Ala. Martha d. about 1860 in Saline Co, Ark. and William died Sept. 1869 in Bell Co, Texas. Their children: 1. Mary Elizabeth, b. 16 Oct 1853, Saline Co, Ark., d. 23 Sept 1923 Rotan, Texas. Married Allen Preston Kelly. Their child: 1. Velma Joy Kelley, b. 3 Aug 1892, Rotan, Texas, d. 17 Feb. 1968 Kemerrer, Wy, buried Farmington, N.M. 9. M.J., No information. 10. John C., b. 1825 Lauderdale Co, Ala., md. Elizabeth J. Chenault. He was with the 3rd Ark. Cavalry at Westport, Missouri. Was injured when hit by a mini ball in the leg. He was with Gen. Price and was promoted to Major. His will was filed in Saline Co., Ark. dated 23 Mar 1893 and was proven 27 Aug. 1894. Children in will: 1. John H., md. Mira ---. 2. Calvin B., No information other than he was executor of will of his Uncle Alford in 1855. 3. Marzavine Jerome, served in 3rd Ark. Calvary. Was Captain and promoted to Lt.Col. on 17 Mar 1863. 4. Mary Laura, md. McMillival 5. Jethro P., b. 7 Jan 1848, Benton, Saline Co., Ark., md. Mary E. Ruffin about 1873. Mary E. Ruffin was b. in Miss. and d. about 1906, probably Ark.
