Paul D Tyson Feb 23, 1998 HICKS/LAWHON/MORDEN/NIX /SOWELL I am researching the HICKS, LAWHON, MORDEN, NIX and SOWELL families. The majority of these families lived in what is now the East End, East Union and Sardis communities of Saline County. The earliest member of the HICKS family that I have is as follows: Henry H HICKS, born 28 November 1817 in South Carolina. He was living in Carroll County, Tennessee in 1839 when his oldest child, James Harvey HICKS, Sr. was born. They arrived in Union Township of Pulaski County (now Banner Township of Saline County) about 1856. Descendants of this family still live in the East End Community of Saline County. Associated families are COLE, CRAWFORD, JONES and SPANN. The earliest member of the LAWHON family that I have is as follows: Lewis LAWHON born about 1750 and living in Moore County, North Carolina in 1780. His son Joel LAWHON was born in North Carolina before 1780 and his son Josiah Thomas LAWHON was born about 1823 in Moore County, North Carolina. Josiah married Mary Jane Sowell whose line I will get to later. Josiah and Mary Jane migrated to Union Township of Pulaski County (now Banner Township of Saline County) about 1855. Ollie Mae LAWHON, daughter of Nathaniel Green LAWHON and Granddaughter of Josiah Thomas LAWHON married George Allen HICKS, son of James Harvey HICKS, Sr. Descendants of this family still live in the East Union Community of Saline County. Associated families are BIGGS, CRAWFORD, HARPER and MASHBURN. The earliest member of the MORDEN family that I have is as follows: Horatio Nelson MORDEN born 4 March 1827 and was living in Carlisle, Canada when his son James Grey MORDEN was born on 8 May 1858. James Grey MORDEN came to Saline County, Arkansas about 1875 where he lived for a while in the home of James Harvey HICKS, Sr. and eventually married the oldest daughter of James Harvey, Emily Jane HICKS. They lived at Bryant and then moved to Hurricane Township of Saline County. Dr. James Grey MORDEN went to Medical School and was the 53rd graduate from the Medical School in Little Rock, Arkansas. Descendants of this family still live in the Sardis Community of Saline County. The earliest member of the NIX family that I have is as follows: William NIX was born about 1808 in South Carolina, moved to Georgia about 1832/1833 and to Pontotoc County, Mississippi about 1847. He died in Mississippi before June 1857 and his wife EDY moved to what is now the East End Community of Saline County before July 2, 1860 when she received a land patent. Her daughter Melissa Ann NIX married James Harvey HICKS, Sr. 24 July 1861. The earliest member of the SOWELL family that I have is as follows: Richard SOWELL born 1669 in Scotland, his son Richard SOWELL, Jr. was born 1690, and his son Obadiah SOWELL was born 1717 in North Carolina. Obadiah's son Isaac SOWELL was born 1741 in Moore County, North Carolina where his son Asa (SEAWELL) SOWELL was born 31 March 1779. Asa's son Dempsey SOWELL was born about 1804 in Moore County, North Carolina and his daughter Margaret Jane SOWELL was born about 1830 in Moore County, North Carolina where she married Josiah Thomas LAWHON. Dempsey migrated to Union Township of Pulaski County (now Banner Township of Saline County) about 1855 along with his daughter Margaret Jane and his son-in-law Josiah Thomas LAWHON.
